Kevin Chen the reason it’s bad to not vaccinate is because by leaving yourself vulnerable to sicknesses you also leave people who can’t get vaccines for medical reasons now more vulnerable to sickness because not only can the disease get them sick through nature, but now also you. So it’s not ok to believe that because your harming other people

All of my Indian friends hate that Apu was removed, it was their favourite character- it was MY favourite character too, and I'm European. He's one of the smartest characters in the whole show, and often serves to show just how DUMB American culture can be, and how he has to dumb himself down to fit in. I feel like people who think that Apu was a negative racial stereotype weren't really paying attention, at all. Same kinda people who see mini-skirts in star-trek and think it's sexist, when in reality it was feminism and at the time, so progressive it nearly got them canceled.

@Rookmations The basic idea got through, and yeah, we are in agreement. Real shame that Azaria has personally said he will no longer voice the character, that is one of the bigger shames, because it really does send the wrong message, as you said, about voicework and who can do what. I live not far from him in NYC and actually have seen him on the street once, if I ever run into him, I'll actually go up to him and bother him this time to thank him for his work and respectfully disagree with his decision to cave to the Haris of this world.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with a gay character having some stereotypical aspects as long as it's not derailing their characterization to make them do something stereotypical because a writer somehow felt the need to fill a stereotype quota. The problem is when a show consistently writes gay characters that way & acts like it's normal. Like Family Guy. The gay characters in that show are almost incapable of having a personality trait other than "does stuff you'd expect from a gay character". As a result, they're barely characters. They're just vehicles for jokes. Though the same could be said for any modern Family Guy character.

@@PEDROGARCIA-qj3gr Honestly I kind of agree, the argument that "if it wasn't wrong for [a long time] then why is it wrong now" is very weak. Whether you agree with it or not, things change. hooowever, in this argument Apu may a stereotype to some extent, but was never intended to be seen as just a stereotype/making fun of indians. I think people are exaggerating, knowing the context and substance of the character; he's definitely not a hate symbol.

"He's a bait and switch, and some people aren't seeing the switch" This is so accurate. As a lifelong Indian and lifelong Simpsons fan, Apu was one of my favourite characters, I'd go so far as to say a positive influence on Indian stereotypes. Apu is portrayed as just stereotypical enough that viewers aren't alienated, except from when the focus is on him which is when he goes above and beyond. We'll miss you, sweet prince.

@@Ashley-iw2no I find it potentially closer to offensive and racist to say a character from another land is not allowed to have a thick accent. Doesn't that strike you as odd to say thick accents are looked down upon and people should get a new voice when coming to America, even in a comedy? Thick accents can't be represented? They'll never be more than a stereotype, because people can't look past it? If you ask me, taking a character out because of a thick accent and running a convenience store (even though there's far more to Apu) seems closer to being racist than leaving him in.

That was beautiful. It kinda blows my mind seeing how many of the cartoon characters from my childhood had funny accents, and how much we would lose if they were all taken away. This is a really important video and I honestly think anyone should see it, Simpsons fan or not. It honestly transcends the Apu discussion and becomes even more meaningful as a broader discussion of race and culture and how that relationship interacts with comedy, and how important that interaction is to our society. I'm almost sad you drew that beautiful picture of naked Apu because I would have loved to share this with my family and colleagues, but your taboo-ignoring oddball humor only made the video more poignant as a celebration of wackiness, and why it's so important to our society. Bravo.

Maybe he's given some dimension from time to time but over all he just comes of as a joke. Some idiots are probably going to say that's the point cause it's a comedy but we're talking about character substance or the idea behind a character here. And from that perspective he just doesn't seem very real at all. Or even come off as a reflection or exaggeration of someone that's real. Feels like a bunch of unflattering stereotypes cobbled together and balanced out with attempts of making him seem more developed than he is

I'm a white woman who grew up watching The Simpsons. I haven't seen the show in years, but Apu was _always_ my favourite character. I was a kid, but I didn't see him as an Indian stereotype and I didn't like him because of his accent. He was a genuine, kind, and hardworking guy who loves his family and friends. Yes, of course, there are some cliches to his character, as with _every_ character on the show, but he's so much more than just a convenience store owner. One of my favourite episodes was when he went on a pilgrimage with Homer, and Homer kept screwing up the entire journey. At the end, Apu beats the crap out of Homer for ruining everything, and I cheered! As a lower middle class white kid, I sympathised and identified with an Indian character in a comedy show. It's almost like ... he was a good character.

Your love for Mario is similar to the love Mexicans have for Speedy Gonzalez. He's a fun representative of our culture. Do we have accents? Some us do. Do we wear sombreros? Its definitely part of the culture. Speedy is a representative of us in the Looney Tunes era where Mexicans were otherwise not represented at all. It was a fun tongue-in-cheek way to laugh at our own culture. Its possible for another culture to represent another as long as its not degrading. I have no problem with the legendary Mel Blanc voicing Speedy or the way he was represented because they weren't making fun of Mexican culture - Speedy has his own storylines. It feel like now everyone gets insulted too easily. I get that they have a right to voice how they feel, but at one point are they going to see themselves as possibly being too sensitive?

I and my friends are "this generation" and I dont think the number of offended people changed much but if you where offended by something 30 years ago you didn't have quick access to almost every other offended person on the planet. If you found something offensive before the Invention of the internet you could write to the news, the person doing the offending or the government, maybe complain to your mates at the pub. Blaming "the new generation" feels very lazy because weirdly all the rough and "offensive" comedy and animation from the 80 and 90s is HUGE in pop culture these days, video games are as gruesome as ever but now in hd and you can just look at dead bodies online instead of paying the weird stranger behind your local supermarket. So most of us clearly love offensive stuff.

And now that the character is like 20 years old it would be strange to change the voice actor. Although if they felt like cowtowing to these hateful whiners they could. Unsure how it would damage the character without seeing it first though.

That's just because your puny Mexican brain can't process it properly. Don't worry hapless Mexican, I, the great American, shall remove this offensive mouse from the television and all forms of media, so neither you, nor your children, will have to see this heroic Mexican character who outwits and defeats every adversary he comes across!" There were a lot of Mexican kids in my neighborhood, and they ADORED this character. Pretty much everything I've seen online says that he was popular with Mexicans, both in the country, and immigrants from it.

I love how you were able to show a real level of empathy while at the same time being able to be critical at the topic at hand. I thought the balance of comedy to seriousness about the argument was extremely well done (the comedy might have gone a little far at some points, not that it wasn't hilarious! it was! just might distract from the main argument at points) and I also love that you bring up all different points of perspective, and how your willing to say that you can't get a certain perspective because you didn't grow up Indian. The level of thought and analysis going on here is really something else, and doing that all through ANIMATION!?!? my god man that is a feat in of itself. I like to argue a that white as a term is rather lazy as it forcefully group cultures together, the same goes for stuff like black or Asian. these terms may make sense to apply intercountry but don't function that well on a bigger scale, after all most people would rather default to their nationality or ethnicity over race, but if i am to entertain the notion of race. Kartos is white, the ancient Greek according to most get identified as white, while they have tan skin, tan skin is something any white person would develop living in a warmer climate.

He's hardly a flattering depiction of my culture - he's loud, violent, aggressive, patriotic, proud, stubborn and psychopathic - but that's what I found funny about him, that's what everyone found funny about him! This is the same character who tried to keep sheltered from the rain by holding a colander over his head, and never once did I feel as of there was any malicious or mean-spirited intent behind him to dehumanise or disparage my nationality. I love the show, I love both the depth and simplicity of its characters and to this day, I'll still defend Willy and the depiction of Scots. Apu has always come on the other side of a parody character, he is not flawed, he is hyper compentent. Problem is, he is stuck at a dead end job because his programing skills are useless even by the time the episode that showed he had a degree on programing on Punch Card Computers aired.

Couldn't he have just learned other forms of programming? It shouldn't have been that hard to grasp (he'd just be building on fundamental knowledge), the only thing holding him back would've been the cost. Although, i also don't know how expensive college was back when the Simpsons was airing.

Also punch card computers are still in use. The first machines controlled by computers were controlled with punch tape. CNC (computer numerical control) machines today were originally just called NC machines. Machines that have been well.maintained are still manufacturing parts, they just need people who know how to use them

One time in eighth grade, this girl (who’s a huge thot, but that’s not important) was introducing herself to the class (bc it was the first day) and after saying her last name, the teacher asked “is that last name based from Italy?” When she responded yes, I turned around and screamed MAMMA MIA, holding up the Italian hands, as the entire class died from laughter. Sorry for the long comment.

Why are accents considered racist? Like, if I'm trying to parody a person by asserting a stereotype then yeah, that's mean. But why is just doing an accent that's not yours automatically racist?
@n0kt0h45
@n0kt0h45 5 жыл бұрын
Most accents are exaggerated, so if you sound like that, people are automatically going to call you racist for exaggerating accents. Either that, or they hate that race, so they'll call you out for using that accent. Or they LOVE that race, in which case they'll hate you for mocking their language. Even worse is when they ARE a member of that race

Racism is the hatred of another person purely because of their skin tone. It's an unfounded fallacious response to a perfectly natural thing that people have, which cannot be controlled due to their genetics and birth. Using other cultures such as putting on an accent can be interpreted in many ways, some people may use an accent to mock that culture, some may do it out of love, others may just do it nonchalantly without caring because it's fun. All in all there are many ways to interpret words but there was only one intention when those words were said. The only reason why racism or the like is an issue is due to people being offended, and people wanting to prevent that. If we all developed enough of a personality to deal with it, such as playing off any comments that come your way, we would not have this issue. But because people have this idea of being good and virtuous and stopping all hardship in the world, they try to solve problems that don't really exist. It might be a modern thing from the SJW crowd, it might just be a thing ingrained in many people anyways, because it makes sense that people don't like some of the things that are said to them, so they think that if they make it so that nobody ever says that stuff, nobody gets harmed. But that's an extremely unproductive way of going about it. You cannot and arguably should not ever have people who decide how other people act socially. Stopping people from making remarks, be they harmful intentionally or not, is censorship. And censorship is arguably far more harmful than freedom of speech. All in all this discussion of racism and what should and shouldn't be allowed is just extremely tiring. It's not a good discussion because the people who advocate for more censorship mostly do it out of their own virtues, they make it out to be a benevolent act, but really it's extremely selfish and close minded. It's almost like they aren't willing to see the world for all the interesting colours and flavours it can be, so try to boil it down to just a few simple inoffensive terms to avoid being even the slightest bit sad on some days.

@@n0kt0h45 Greek here, and to be frank, I wouldn't have a problem with someone non-Greek impersonating the Greek accent. Most Greeks know how we sound to foreigners (when we try to speak English, at least) and we ourselves make fun of that fairly often. I believe the same would apply to other people as well.
