*|| Video Notes ||* *Recap of Lesson 1 (with extra points) from **00:00** to **19:22* *Continued introduction to Tawheed ar-Ruboobiyyah* - Allaah says (translation of the meaning): (And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. .....) [45:27]. So Allaah decides what happens and He creates. - Allaah says (translation of the meaning): (..... Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds.) [7:54] - Allaah says (translation of the meaning): (Had there been within the heavens and earth gods besides Allah, they both would have been ruined. So exalted is Allah, Lord of the Throne, above what they describe.) [21:22]. If there were two gods, and one said I want to bless these people and the other said they want to ruin these people then one of them must be destroyed, they are not a god anymore, they are not worthy of worship. So this is not possible. - One fruit of this category of tawheed is that when you look at the creation like the world and your own body then you understand the perfectness of the One who created it. - Another fruit of this category is sabr (patience) because if someone has a problem in life then they remember this ayat where Allaah says (translation of the meaning): (Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tried?) [29:2] - so we will be tested but when we are faced with a test we have the attitude that the One who created us has also told us He will provide for us and that he will not burden a soul with more than it can handle - the One who is testing me knows my situation but he is not going to test me with more than I can handle and Allaah also says that with hardship comes ease - so Allaah tests us according to our ability and he knows we can handle the test which is why is he is testing us in that way - Allaah has tailored our tests to each of us according to our ability to cope. - Many people today say it wasn't Allaah who blessed me with this child, it was pir saab or maulana saab - they haven't understood that Allaah is the One who gives life and death. - The Quraish recognised this category of tawheed but they worshipped others besides Allaah. Allaah says (translation of the meaning): (If you asked them, "Who created the heavens and earth and subjected the sun and the moon?" they would surely say, " Allah ." Then how are they deluded?) [29:61]. La ilaaha illallaa means there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, because there are many false gods but only Allaah is worthy of worship. So just believing in this first category alone does not enter a person into Islam, until he has the other two categories of tahweed as well. If any one of the three categories is missing then a person's Islam is incomplete. - Allaah says (translation of the meaning): (And they worship other than Allah that which neither harms them nor benefits them, and they say, "These are our intercessors with Allah " Say, "Do you inform Allah of something He does not know in the heavens or on the earth?" Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him) [10:18] - Every new-born child is born on the fitrah and then his parents turn him into a Jew or a Christian or a fire-worshipper. *The Second Category of Tawheed - Tawheed al Asmaa was-Sifaat* - Allaah is the only one who can create, give life and death and so on, so He has to be unique and unlike anything else. - The following ayat is the foundation of this category. Allaah says (translation of the meaning): ..... There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing. [42:11] - Many groups have gone astray in this category of tawheed. Jahmiyyah said Allaah has no Names and Attributes - a statement of kufr because something with no attributes does not exist. Mu'tazilah said Allaah has names but not attributes. Ashaa'ira were another group. They went astray because they did not affirm the texts from the Qur'aan and the sunnah. - We have principles so that we do not go astray like these groups. - We describe Allaah as He described Himself in the Qur'aan and how the Prophet (salla Allaahu 'alayhi wa salaam) described Him in the authentic sunnah. - We do not seek an interpretation (ta'weel) - we take it on its apparent meaning - for example the rising of Allaah over His throne. And we do not ask how - for example Allaah descends in the last third of the night - but we do not ask how. A man asked imam Maalik how Allaah rises over His throne. Imam Malik replied: as for the rising over it is known in the Arabic language but as for the how it is unknown, believing in it is obligatory and asking about it is an innovation so get out of my gathering (and he kicked him out of the gathering). The companions did not ask how. So we affirm these things, we don't ask how. - The one who denies anything from the Qur'aan is a kafir. At the same time we don't compare the Names and Attributes of Allaah to the creation. We don't say the Face of Allaah or His Hand our like our faces and hands - it's extremely simple - we simply say what it says in the Qur'aan and the sunnah and we stop - we don't try and explain it. - Allaah says (translation of the meaning): And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein [50:16]. If we take this on its apparent meaning then it seems that Allaah is inside of us BUT THIS IS A STATEMENT OF DISBELIEF to say Allaah is inside of you. We previously said that we take everything on its literal meaning but now we have this ayat. But, we have other ayat and ahadeeth, for example the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to the slave girl: ("Where is Allah?" She said: "In heaven." He asked, "Who am I?" She said, "The Messenger of Allah." So he said to her master: "Set her free, for she is a believer."). So we know from this hadeeth that Allaah is NOT inside of us. So, we see that if the literal meaning contradicts other texts from the Qur'aan or sunnah then we interpret the ayah in question using the other texts from the Qur'aan and sunnah. This is the methodology of the salaf. We take the book of Allaah and the Attributes of Allaah in their apparent meaning unless if doing so would lead to a belief which goes against other proofs and evidences, then we use those other evidences, not our intellect, to interpret them.

42:30 Yahya ibn Yahya reported: We were with Malik ibn Anas, may Allah have mercy on him, and a man came to him, saying, “O Abu Abdullah, ‘The Merciful rose above the Throne,’ (20:5). How is this rising?” Malik bowed his head silently until he raised it, dripping sweat, saying, “The rising is not unknown, its modality is inconceivable, faith in it is an obligation, and asking about it is an innovation. I do not see you as anything but a heretic.” Then, he ordered the man to be expelled. Al-Bayhaqi said, “Most of our scholars followed this example in the issue of the divine attribute of ‘rising,’ as well as the issues of ‘coming,’ ‘going,’ and ‘descending.'” Source: al-I’tiqād lil-Bayhaqī 1/116

42:19 Abdullah ibn Nafi’ reported: Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, was asked about the saying of Allah Almighty, “The Most Merciful rose above the Throne,” (20:5). The man said, “How is His rising?” Malik said, “The rising is acknowledged, its modality is unknown, and asking about it is an innovation. I see you are a man who intended evil with this question.” Source: al-Istidhkār 2/529 Ibn Abdul Barr said, “The people of the Sunnah agreed upon affirming the divine attributes as reported in the Book and the Sunnah, interpreting them as reality and not as a metaphor, except that they do not ask ‘how’ is the modality of any of that.” Source: al-‘Ulūw lil-‘Alī al-Ghaffār 1/250
