Huge nostalgia for Pit Fighter: when I was a child, I used to make championships with my cousins back in 1993, they were staying at my home while my aunt was very sick at the hospital. It really took our minds out of the ordeal, and everything ended up fine.

Yeah I always liked Pit Fighter, and I think the Mega Drive port is actually pretty decent in terms of gameplay. If Sega Lord X didn't like Pit Fighter on the Mega Drive then God knows what he thinks of the SNES port, because that was truly atrocious.

Man, I loved the Genesis port. It's not everything the arcade game was, but it had a lot of great things in the port. My best friend and I would often throw the objects into the crowd and watch to see if the crowd would throw something back. Loved it.

The Dreamcast had a 32-bit CPU, and only some of the instructions on the GPU were 128-bit, as the GPU was mostly a mix of 32-bit and 64-bit instructions. Word length really lost all meaning after 32-bit hit the scene, and it was mostly a marketing thing anyway even beforehand. Both the Dreamcast and Playstation 2 were marketed at the time of release as "128-bit", but then you read the technical specifications and it states "MIPS III 32-bit RISC processor" or "SH-4 32-bit RISC processor", and you are left wondering were are those 128 bits? It turns out only a small fraction of the graphics pipeline used 128-bit floating-point arithmetic, but then you dig further and discovert that the 128-bit arithmetic was actually 64+64 bit double-precision floating-point calculations executed in quick succession, so there was no actual 128-bit code execution at all in both the Dreamcast and PS2. Nowadays GPUs do have the capability of quadruple-precision 128-bit included for some complex vector calculations, but you'll be hard pressed to find those facts anywhere except for the very technical papers.

I never heard anyone call that console 128 bit. I was 90% sure people had stopped caring about bits after the N64 Bits are stupid, now everyone likes teraflops. Which are also stupid. Do the math, Atari Jaguar has 64 bits of power that no developer bothered to actually code their games for, so let's stop talking about bits please?

This brought back so many fond memories of having a Genesis back in the day. There was so much to look forward to. The Genesis had some eye candy right out of the gate. No, the games weren't as smooth as the arcade scalers but coming from an Atari 7800 that I played to death,Iwas grateful to upgrade to a Genesis. With tons of EA, games and other third party support, the sky was the limit with the Genesis for at least a few years. By 94 it was beginning to get long in the tooth as he arcades sported polygon games and what few polygon games the Genesis had were choppy. Though my Jaguar was my show horse for a year until the Saturn arrived , My Genesis/cd/32X was my work horse from 90 to 95. We were all blessed to be alive during such a golden age of home gaming! The Genesis was a huge part of that age! Thanks for the memories!

Fun fact about the genesis port of Ghost'N Goblins, Yuji Naka, main father of the Sonic series, said in an interview that not only had he worked on this port as a programmer, it was there that he learned how to make curvy ground on many layers work, something that would come to be essential in making Sonic work.

My eyes are bawling when watching this. God knows I love the 80's and 90's. My childhood was full of memories. Some bad, some good, but NES and Genesis was part of my experience. I discovered Genesis twice before finally getting Genesis at home. The first time it was Altered Beast it was like "Meh." The second time it was at a kiosk at a rental place. Sonic 2 was demo'ed. I was floored. I got it for Christmas that year. ALONG with... Contra. Oh my GOD. I ruined my own surprise, but I was blown away; new TV!

The arcade ports to the Genesis were generally not exact but we really didn't care one bit back then and were perfectly happy with how close the content was to the arcade versions of modern and current releases. Ghouls and Ghosts, Forgotten Worlds, Golden Axe, Altered Beast; I was thrilled with how all of those turned out; and then in some cases you got games that were different games entirely and better for it such as ESWAT and Shadow Dancer. Loved the Turbografx also but more for the original releases on that system rather than the arcade games that they had.

Dude, so many memories came flooding back to me while watching this. We weren't a rich family growing up. Hell, we did what we could, but when my folks let me rent a game on a semi weekly basis, it was the world to me and my brother and some of the games mentioned here (SF2 for SNES, Mortal Kombat, FF for the Genny) were ones we rented often. It's true that you can never relive your past, but for an arcade kid like me, the home ports at least gave you a chance to experience those games without popping in a quarter. Thanks for taking me back man. I miss those days.

The Genesis port of Pit Fighter is actually the best home conversion. I'd argue it's more fun than the arcade to play too since you can clearly see the play area of the arena especially with two players. The arcade while graphically better is also pretty noisy and makes it harder to judge where everyone/everything is, although that's probably the point with it being a quarter muncher.

Yes, but a good home conversion of a dog turd still smells like shit. Plus, the Genesis lost the only fun part of Pit Fighter: the digitized speech of the fighters yelling "whee" every 3-5 seconds of every match. Yes, they're probably not saying "whee" but that's what it sounds like to me. So comical, the way the game moves and sounds in the arcade, it's hilarious. It's not digitized, but a game from Taito called Violence Fight plays similar to Pit Fighter, but way way better, in that it's much less awkward characters flopping around with no rhyme or reason. Pit Fighter was the "ultimate" quarter muncher because the mechanics were broken or non-existent and the movement was so jerky and such awkward animation, you couldn't really tell why or how you'd lose. The epitome of "button basher" because it was all awkward flailing around. Horrible game. I guess it's "nice" that the Mega Drive has a good conversion, but who cares when the game is total crap? It's only marginally better than Street Smart, which was also terrible.

Seeing the MD version of SF2 back to back with the arcade via KZbin on a flatscreen 28 years after the fact isn't flattering to the MD version, but I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that the MD version on my 14 inch CRT was like having the arcade at home in 1993 and we loved it to death.

Thank you SLX, this is fantastic content! It takes me back to a different time of my life too. I remember the late 80s and early 90s very fondly, and these arcade games (SEGA's in particular) have been a good part of my motivation to pursue computer programming, specifically to become a games developer, which I did! Sometimes I would go to arcades just to watch people playing these games, trying to absorb the techniques that were being used to make such fun experiences... oh the good times.

I wish I had gotten into programming, I took Computer Programming in high school (C++) but by the 2nd semester they stuck us with a teacher who had no idea about programming and that's where I stopped. There was even another teacher who taught Java and I feel that would have been the most beneficial. I did teach myself Photoshop to modify texture maps and that led to me getting hired working in Photoshop, so that was worth it I guess.

The presentation of arcade games often had attract screens that lured you in. A game like Alien Storm did a great job giving you some of the character the game offered. I loved it when a home port got this inclusion.

Yeah I went from an NES to a Genesis. It wasn't until the end of the PS1 generation I got a PC and learned about emulation. I then started emulating all the Super Nintendo games I missed.

@@Gatorade69 Nice. Same with me. I got the NES in maybe 89. Prior to that, at around 6, I got the Atari 2600 but it was a 8 years old by then. As far as I knew it was current. Played the shit out of that. NES was a huge leap. The genesis was really mind blowing too, with Altered Beast being the pack in game I got with the console. Blew my mind to see an arcade game like that running on the system, after the NES. I had seen Altered Beast in a bowling alley arcade. That and double dragon blew my mind back then in arcades. Emulation is amazing. It really opened up gaming for me. I use save/load states as a way to practice super efficiently and complete hundreds of games legit. I sold all my old systems when I embraced full emulation set ups maybe back in 99. Now the Hyper Spin interface is amazing, and the amount of shit emulated, plus being able to use any controller and all the other features.

My stepdad sold all of mine when I moved out after high school. I would still love to own those systems. I should have started collecting back in 2006/7 when retro gaming stuff was really cheap.

@@Gatorade69 Nice. I was born in 80. The NES is an awesome way to start gaming. I do remember initially having a sadness since I had such an attachment to all my consoles and games over the years. There was definately some growing pains but it wasnt too bad for me as I really embraced the preservation of the games back then. Seeing how I could consolidate all these games into one machine and how they mostly all ran great was enough to really solidify the decision for me. Luckily my friend knew how to build the PC. I had a construction job at the time and put most of that initial money into building the machine. The interface was just a windows desktop with folders for the emulators, roms, but it was awesome. To be able to access all the old 8 and 16 bit systems alone back then was crazy to me. Right before I got into emulation I had spent maybe 500 dollars on a bunch of used games through Game Dude , a mail order service (internet orders werent really a thing in 96 or 97). I went through the process of selling console collections a few times over the years. As things like PS2 became very well emulated, those collections got sold and money was put back into the gaming set up. Its become pretty normal for me now. I do keep physical games for all the consoles that arent well emulated however. Before selling a collection I do some pretty heavy testing to make sure the machine is emulated to my satisfaction. My current emulation machine is much more advanced with the Hyper Spin interface and runs everything from the Wii ,PSP and down to the oldest consoles and computers. When I get a real good camera I hope to do a detailed room set up tour as well as videos focused purely on emulation set up. My friend will film those since he is the one who built everything.

I've really enjoyed this arcade series sega lord. Growing up we all wanted to bring those giant beautiful cabinets home with us. I remember having very similar experiences with these games on home consoles. Some were fun but just couldn't stack up to thier arcade brothers. Genesis is also one of my favorites and in my opinion was the first system that really came the closest to replicating the arcades. Thanks for these awesome videos and keep up the great work

I'll never forget 'Growl' - when I was a wee lad my mom would only buy me very select games. It basically had to be about animals, if it had any other kind of violence it wasn't gonna happen. Games like Primal Rage were examples of ways I used this loophole to get my gaming fix. It was about animals. Growl was much the same, it's name let me ask for it for a present and get it without questions. Then she walked in on me literally whipping women and I never saw that cartridge again. lol

I often wondered myself about how the Genesis' arcade legacy would be viewed today had it implemented sprite scaling in to its hardware. It must have been really tricky technology back then as even the SNES could only pull of background scaling/rotation, but then I remember that the Atari Lynx had it in 1989. My guess is that there weren't any off-the-shelf chips available with this technology that were affordable, and Sega wasn't willing to make a custom chip with it included. Really loving this series, man. The best work you've done this year.

I feel blessed to have grown up in the eras of such starkly different technological capabilities that shaped the games of the 16bit and 32/64bit generations. Having loved 16bit machines, then to get such a huge upgrade to 2D sprites and new 3D games I'd only dreamed of felt like such a significant change. Now the current generation doesn't even seem much different from the previous, as did the previous generation from it's predecessor. The lines grow thinner every generation.

You should check indie games especially the 2D games. People are sleeping on them and it gives you the 16-bit/32-bit/128-bit ie dreamcast feel to it.
