Walking through Leicester today it is often difficult to appreciate that we are treading on 2,000 years of history, but beneath the city's streets are the remains of an Iron Age oppidum, a Roman city, an Anglo-Saxon burgh and a medieval borough. In this talk Mathew Morris provides an overview of the archaeological exploration of Leicester, from early antiquarian discoveries to the latest commercial excavations. This talk was recorded live on 14 July, 2021 for the Council for British Archaeology's Festival of Archaeology.

Wow! What an absolutely amazing, interesting, educational story this whole thing is, thank you for sharing Their must be many other cities like this sitting on top of ancient ruiens that will never be able to be uncovered and studied the way it was here

I dug with the Field Unit in the late 1970s and early 1980s on sites including Bond Street, Blackfriars, Norfolk Street as well as out in the County at Sproxton, as well as post excavation at the Humberstone Annex. I knew Jean, Terry, Patrick (Cass), Richard, John, etc well at the time. I subsequently moved away from Leicester, digging in Lincolnshire, Shropshire, Northants and Hampshire. Nice to see my sites in context of what has been excavated since my time.

Proud to be from Leicestershire. I'd love more information on the Swithland wood slate quarries.
