Living in Finland, you never hear the excuse "the wrong kind of snow" for delayed trains! The best thing about the trains in the winter is walking next to railway lines in the countryside with sparking from the pantograph of passing trains and northern lights in the sky behind. Quite magical.

The thing is... There are different types of snow. So when Munich airport got shut down a few weeks ago, while Helsinki etc didn't, it was because of a type of wet, clumpy snow you just don't get further North.
@richard-riku
@richard-riku 5 ай бұрын
@@deeser I live in Helsinki and by chance went to Munich two weeks ago, just after the snowfall you mentioned. Munich just isn't ready for any kind of snow. The footpaths were poorly ploughed by miniature tractors and most of the snow left to be compacted underfoot to turn into slippery ice because no gravel was applied. The tram network took almost a week to get going after the snowfall! We do have thick wet snow in Finland (often in April) but have the machinery and even city design (wide footpaths than can be cleared by a normal sized tractor) to deal it it.

Usually the oslo - trondheim route is served by the long distance F6 service which uses class 73 trains and they do have a cafe car, better seats, first class and separation between boarding and seating however because of the bridge failure the only service running between oslo and trondheim is this regional service which uses class 76 trains and that is meant for shorter trips.

@@student8557 According to the note at page 603 of the European Rail Timetable winter edition, 'it is hoped that that the line will fully reopen by spring/summer 2024'. That note and Table 785 of the ERT make it clear that trains with first class and dining cars are running on the route via Llillehamar, albeit the one short section around the broken bridge is a rail replacement bus.

Usually, those type 76 trains doesn't go all the way between Oslo and Trondheim. They are built for going on the route between Trondheim and Steinkjer and on Rørosbanen. So that's why they aren't fitted with 1st class and a restaurant part.

Over here in Toronto, our main railway station (Union station) was renovated recently to make it into a mini-shopping centre of sorts! It also connects to the PATH, an underground network connecting office building basements with even more stores.

At that price I am amazed you even got vending machines and toilets. We had a circular train holiday in 1995, Oslo to Ändalsnes toTrondheim to Roros and back, but in exceptional heat. What astonished us was that near Lillehammer they handed out FREE ice creams to everyone because of the heat.

This '76' train is not normally used on through services from Oslo to Trondheim. It is basically a local train which has been drafted in.because of the emergency. They are the only dual-mode trains in Scandinavia. The regular trains via Lillehamar (like you traveled on in 1995) have first class and dining car. I travelled on this route in July: after visiting a friend near Eidsvoll I took the Vy train (similar Stadler units to those of SJ Nord) to Hamar, where I visited the railway museum. In the afternoon I continued with a class 73 (ex "Signatur") unit of SJ Nord on the Dovre line which was still open at that time. But we only came to Dovre, where the train ended due to defective overhead wires. Apparently the damage happened not much before so there was no replacement bus. After some wait passengers who had to reach the night train in Trondheim could board the first bus which took us almost nonstop to there (braking a few times for young moose standing cluelessly in the middle of the road ...) The night train actually waited and I had a decent sleep in my compartment. Of course in that season we had a lot more light! I never travelled on the Røros line yet and I guess I will do that during the daylight so I see more of the scenery.

So,it was surprising/ disappointing that there was not much leg room for you !! There'll be for me as I'm only 5.3 !! Lol.I realized right away that the seat's padding was not so good because the seats looked stiffy / hard ! Lol.But,over all ,very modern & spacious & clean train with a wonderful price !! Unbelievable value !! You're right ,though ! There should had been a proper dining car for the 1st class !! That would had made a huge impact & difference on passenger's memories & impressions !! Definitely !! For the future videos ,not sure ,but,I'd love to see some comparison videos !! Like videos showing the same routes but by different trains ! Pros / cons & value comparisons ! Also ,I'd love videos of Cotswold & Lake Como !!And some Central America or South American countries !! Thank you ! Just suggestions ! Thanks so much for this upload !! 💜🥁🐉🎤🎶🚈🎄✈️💕💞

The reason as to the lack of facilities is because this is a temporary diversion and these trains are supposed to be used as regional trains in the Trondheim region. These are the only bi-mode trains in use in Norway, and the trains used on the actual route are tilting express trains and loco-hauled trains, both with facilities like restaurants and more comfort.

Now Greece is not known as a country of trains, this one hour trip is a good choice. Combine this with a review of Trenitalia Frecciarossa (say Milano - Bari/Brindisi) and of the ferry from there to Patras (Bari 19:30, Patras next day 12:00). From Patras there are two or three busses a day to Diakofto, travel time ca 50 minutes.

I am already guessing that the 23 05 sleeper to Bodo was heavily delayed awaiting the train 'from Oslo' via the usual Dovreban route. This train would of course be a 'rail replacement bus' for a short part of its route. I am also guessing that the relevant trains on the Dovreban will have had first class and dining car. And that the train you used got a lot quieter because most Oslo-Trondheim-[further north] passengers still prefer to use the Dovreban route despite the nuisance of the rail replacement bus. While the dual drive (diesel/electric) is a good idea, I find the absence of bulkheads separating the passenger cabins from the vestibules suitable for commuter trains but not for the long distance ones, especially not in the winter. How did it feel at the stations when the door opened?
@olasola1013
@olasola1013 5 ай бұрын
It’s a commuter train. They have no other/better choice for running direct trains than these, except the Class 93 which is only diesel, tilting, slower and smaller. The actual Dovrebanen route uses tilting express electric multiple units and loco-hauled trains, both with bulkheads and proper restaurants. The trains are used as regional/commuter trains in the Trondheim region, running the routes of Steinkjer-Trondheim-Støren, (Trondheim)-Røros-Hamar as well as for commuter trains around Bodø.

The last time I made that trip it was a Norwegian Railways loco hauled train with a restaurant car. It strikes me rhat Swedish Railways are operating this service to be ultra profitable. No on board Catering so more seating space available. I’m sure the trip on the Bergensbanen was a far more enjoyable and comfortable experience. No I don’t like Stations being converted into Shopping Malls with the trains as a secondary feature. By all means have a wide selection of outlets on the stations but not where they lose their identity ( Birmingham New Street is a prime example as is London St Pancras which I detest)

In fairness to SJ Nord much more needs to be said about the actual train traveled on. This '76' train is not normally used on through services from Oslo to Trondheim. It is basically a local train which has been drafted in.because of the emergency caused by the broken bridge.. They are the only dual-mode trains in Scandinavia. The regular trains run by Swedish Railways) via Lillehamar have first class and dining car. See table 785 of the new WINTER edition of the European Rail Timetable, and the note at page 603.

Last summer June 24, i travelled from Oslo to Bergen on the famous Bergen railway. The ride was phantastic. The operator on this line is VY. The train categorie of this train is F. This train had a comfort class car with free coffee. There was also a cafeteria car where you could eat small meals which was ok for this journey. You travelled on a R-Train between Oslo and Trondheim which has less comfort. On this line there also the better and faster F-trains. Choose for next journey an F-Train.

Well it's mostly because of EU rules, around in Europe it's becoming more common. Low cost high speed trains competing with the classic companies. But it's been highly controversial in Norway, with the left wing parties opposing competition and the right wing parties welcoming it. SJ Nord and Go-Ahead (and Vy formerly NSB) won contracts during the former centre right government, but announced competitions got cancelled immediatly when the left wing government won the election in 2021. The sitting left wing government has been in deep trouble since the beginning though, with lots of political scandals, the ongoing war, high electricity prices and a weak Norwegian Krone contributing to extremely weak election results in the 2023 local elections for the current centre left government. Of the 20 biggest municipalities in Norway, only 1 is governed by the Arbeiderpartiet (Labour party) now, with 18 being governed by Høyre (conservatives) and 1 by FrP (progress party). Only 16% of the population now lives in a Labour municipality, while 66% lives in a conservative municipality. @@winnied87

@rowaystarco
@rowaystarco 5 ай бұрын
The railway is not privatized and there's still trains with "first class" and a cafe car. The issue here is that the regular regional route is blocked because of the flood destroyed bridge. Thus alternate bimodal trains like the FLIRT one has to be used instead. The regular but old train sets use electric locos and carriages. The regional trains are due to be replaced in 3-4 years by brand new Stadler FLIRTnex trains. All of the trains are bought by the government owned Norske tog and then used by the operators (Vy, SJ Nord, Go-Ahead)

Have to be honest yes they look nice enough and very familiar to the trains in Norfolk in England, but they just don’t look the best for such a long journey, really shocked no hot meals available. A similar distance time wise would be London to Inverness with LNER, but at least you can have hot snacks in standard class from the buffet, or a proper hot freshly cooked meal in first class. This video was a bit of an eye opener. Not what I would expect in Norway. A train like that looks like it would be more appropriate in a shorter journey such as Edinburgh to Inverness.

This is a regional train on the third-longest route in the country. The trains on the original route are BM73a tilting express EMUs and El18-hauled locomotive consists, both having proper first class and restaurants aboard. SJ Norge has no better alternative for the trains while they still want to keep a direct service between the two cities until the bridge is fixed. They have Di4 diesel locomotives and carriages, but there simply isn’t enough of those locomotives (5 have been produced) to keep a frequent service as they also have to serve the Nordland line. This is not an eye-opener as this is a temporary solution.
