He died from Lung Cancer in 2010 (despite never having smoked in his Life but he worked for an American Company in Germany that worked on Nuclear Sciences after WW2) Anyway, he always told me about how much of a "Sh'tshow" it was regarding the Paratroopers/Falschirmjäger and Tactics etc. He also mentioned how almost all their Gear ended up a few Kilometers away from their Landing Spot. Of course as his Grandson i'm glad he survived this. I still have his "Kreta Armband" (Crete Cufftitle) framed on my Wall Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps

I am sooo happy for seeing someone finally do this rifle. I own a type 99 Arisaka passed down from my WW2 grandfather. It is an amazing piece, unsure of how he ever got it back here. Has the chrome barrel, anti air sights, cleaning kit, mono-pod, and fully intact chrysanthemum and arsenal numbers. I put about 200 rounds of 7.7 FMJ from Norma through it without failure. Last time I went looking for ammo the rounds jumped in price from about $1 to over $4 each, maybe the market is better now.

the reason they spliced the stock is the type and quality of the wood they used and the way they wanted the grain on the toe to go. when they made the stocks out of a single piece of wood the toe would often crack and pieces would break off from repeated slamming the toe against the ground. so they came up with splicing the stoch with a piece with the grain running in a different direction than the rest of the stock.

That was quite a find, the rifle appears hardly used. The Arisaka was one of the strongest bolt actions ever made. If you can find it, see the story of the 6.5x50 type 38 in Frank de Haas' "Bolt Action Rifles", that was rechambered in .30-06. I’ve got one of these and the story about how I acquired it is a bit random. My dad is a plumber and went to work on a house for a low income vet. The guy gave my dad a few gold coins and an Arisaka. My dad is pretty liberal and as such, he’s not a gun guy at all. However, I was still in the army at the time and he knew as a grunt that guns were a huge hobby for me. He drove 800 miles to bring this firearm down to me and I still have it. Weird gun, rare ammo, but fun to shoot and mine still has the chrysanthemum so the history on it is rather interesting to me.

The Type 99 was truly an excellent piece of military hardware. When they first developed it, they were planning to make it a long rifle ala the Type 38. They quickly realized that yeah, the average Japanese soldier was tiny and so making a rifle that's more than a head taller then them with the bayonet attached wasn't really practical. Roughly 38,000 Type 99 Long rifles were made before they switched to the standard short rifle. 30,000 were made by the Toyo Kogyo factory and 8000 by Nagoya Arsenal. I own one of the Nagoya Arsenal ones and it's the pride of my collection. It's amazing how cheap they are despite their rarity. The Arisaka Rifles are seriously underrated for how cool they are.

The American paratroopers do use drop canisters for weapons too but it's not in canister forms but mostly just normal bags stuffed with rifles and clips and dropped along with paratroopers. Whilst of course, the US Paras have weaponry that fit the need of a paratroopers like the M1 Carbine and the SMGs, they too need suppressive firepower and enough range to reach certain enemies beyond 300yrds so there are still riflemen in the US Paras that requires guns like BARs and Garands. That's when the weapons drop in burlap bags comes into play.
@MrLolx2u3 ай бұрын
Also, the rattling sound isn't coming from when you fire the gun. It's when you move WITH the gun that's the issue. You have to remember that during the entirety of the early Pacific war, American and the Commonwealth forces were in the deep end and were losing hard. Japan was on a run and their forces are very well-trained fighting in jungles vs the Allied forces as they've consistent trainings in their occupied territory even before the war, Taiwan. Thus, the Japanese were great in jungle recon, sabotage and even ambushes but that's when the dust cover became a problem. The firing part wasn't their concern but it's just that due to that loose metal part, it rattles quite abit as they walk and run around behind foliage and the worse it got with unmatched dust covers. It reared its ugly head even more in Guadacanal as this time, the Japanese were losing its ground and had to resort in attacking the Americans in the dark or ambushes which helped but they're often caught out by the alerting Americans cuz with raider and flushing parties out to hunt these entrenched Japanese, once the Japanese moved and the dust cover rattles, their cover is blown and got met with overpowering US firepower thus many ditched the dust cover soon after. They too realized that the gun still works either way so might as well.

If you're into vintage take-down rifles, here's one for you - the Remington Model 24 - the original version of what would become the Browning SA-22 - designed by John Browning himself - in various iterations of 22 Rimfire. Remington produced the Model 24 for some years after WWI, before Browning got his own company up and going, and started making the SA-22. And the design has changed so little over the years, that you can still take some of the parts from a modern SA-22, and use them in a Remington Model 24 that's close to or over 100 years old. After my father passed away in 2011, I found a Remington Model 24 in 22 Short he'd acquired from someone, hidden in the back of a closet. Date code on the barrel translated to a production date of September 1922. After doing a little research, cleaning out a century's worth of grease and dirt, and fixing the stretched-out magazine tube spring, it's in excellent condition and works flawlessly.

Tmk The real reason the dust covers are usually missing is the same reason many Kar98s have mismatched bolts and its just the fact theyd usually get discarded either when surrendered and piled up or the GIs were throwing them away themselves. The idea of the Japanese themselves throwing them out doesnt make sense due to how the IJA and IJN disciplined soldiers, if any of threw threw away a part of their rifle for no reason theyd likely be beaten as they were for basically any other disciplinary action.
