I think that, from a literary standpoint, everyone is missing what Sarah stands for in the story. She represents the silent scream that they all felt and suppressed. Because of who they were, they had to work hard to maintain a public persona, to do what was expected. Natural desires and individuality was suppressed constantly. Sarah was the best and softest, and the lifestyle of this constant painting a public picture and lying to oneself for the good of appearances, destroyed her. She represented the free spirit - beautiful as it was - that could not survive their society.

I think the King leaving Sarah in the cold, did quite a number on her, it would to anyone. Plus marrying that cold fish of a husband who cared nothing about her, deepened her sense of worthlessness. She was alive but really not living! If she'd never met the King, her life would have been different I suppose.

She did not want to marry the king because she didn't love him and was glad when he did not propose but her family was dismayed and upset. Sadly there after she was married to some jerk of a husband. Sarah deserved so much better and would have been much better off staying in Ireland.

I think that's unfortunately common human behavior: to act in a way that flouts the family or social rules of the time, then turn into the 'tyrant' that one rebelled against and somehow punish or mistreat others whose behaviors bring back one's (repressed) sense of shame. It's sad for everyone who suffers from unsympathetic family who usually don't even try to understand another's feelings and point of view, who suffers from being a square peg forced into a round hole. It's a major thread throughout all human history at all levels of society to this day. After her marriage to Mr. Fox, Caroline outwardly conforms rigidly to social mores (perhaps as a penance, or with a sense of penance?) and claims she has rights within the family due to being the eldest. In a sense, she has become her father. By her hard attitude, it is clear that she still carries emotional wounds. Some people learn from their experiences and try to make life gentler for others, but Caroline is among the majority who don't. I don't think she has much self-insight or genuine concern for others.
@sr77018 жыл бұрын
I can't believe she had the nerve to tell her sister to take sides against her husband. Everything Jimmy said was true. She left Sarah to the wolves and when it blew up in her face didn't want any of the blame. Caroline is just sickening.

My understanding is that it was (and still is, in the 'upper' social circles) acceptable for the women to take a lover discreetly *_after_* they'd produced at least one legitimate male heir. The men had no such restriction on their sexual behavior. This is not to say that there weren't many marriages where one or both spouses chose fidelity.

More SEX, anyone??? All this - - Messing Around - - is typical of the Rich, Lazy class who do not have to struggle for Food, Clothes, and Shelter. Sara is neither talented nor beautiful nor particularly intelligent. And she certainly has very little to offer that mono-syllabic husband that she "hand picked". While I do not find the story particularly interesting or stimulating, the subtitles which were provided for Episodes 2 and 3 made it worthwhile for foreign language study. It is perplexing that Episodes #1 and now #4 are not so equipped.
@greenshp9 жыл бұрын
+LOTTIE TUNES Wow. That is violently judgmental. Sarah has wonderful qualities, and a better heart than any of them. Women married for various reasons then, different than now, and a loveless marriage wasn't uncommon. Sarah's husband deserved a swift kick in the ass, and after the way he treated her, I don't blame her at all for her choices. I hope your own life is easy enough that you never have to deal with such heartache or make such choices; you obviously haven't any experience with it yet.
@lottietunes35419 жыл бұрын
greenshp~~ You seem to enjoy labeling and using exaggerations in reference to the comments of other viewers. Adverbs such as "violently" should be justified, instead of loosely applied to the comments of viewers. Sarah's "wonderful qualities" are few and far in between. Her proclivities for gambling, drinking, and committing adultery are above and beyond those of most married women. That is a large part of the basis of the film. If you have a problem with the facts of the film, perhaps you should contact the producer!
