I liked the part where Guthrie plays intricate chords and lightning-fast perfectly accurate scales mixed with creative bends in a huge variety of cool tones in perfect sync with his band who are also virtuosos. It starts at 0:00 and goes to the end.

The thing is, Marco is not only an excellent drummer... He has kinda "photografic" (better said "videografic") musical memory... In 1991 he used to record nearly the whole CD "Senseless Wonder", just with the click... cos the bassist and guitarist were too stoned to play tight enough, so he kicked them out of the studio while drumming his ass off ;-) He used to warm up with playing along Zappa before recording for his band... I am sure he had been in Zappas band eventually.

@FlecheDeFer As a complete player, Guthrie is head and shoulders above all of them (except maybe Beck). He encompasses more styles into his compositions than any of the others and improvises in any of those styles seamlessly. IMO, the only other guitarist on his level would be Ron Thal.

@@kevinmcguinness1113 When I started the guitar, looog time ago, I was also obsessed about who's better than who, but I've long passed that. I realized guitar is about music, not showing off, so there is no "best guitarist". Actually, and contrary to what I believed when I started, the best guitarists are those who can say it all with the fewest notes, which pretty much rules out the virtuosos. Govan dosen't touch me at all, and I've listened to him a lot. Like all the shredders, he plays way too many notes when one, the right one, would suffice. Watching him trying to cover Billy Gibbons, yet a waaaay weaker guitarist technically, was an eye-opener. Now, he is a phenomenal guitarist, of course, but saying that he is "head and shoulders" above such virtuosos as Vai or Satriani merely reveals a fan (discaimer: I'm not a fan of any of the guys you mentionned, so I'm not defending anyone). Thal is amazing, yes, but generally too experimental to really be listened too (that being said, Fly in the Batter guitar parts (bridges and solo) are among my favorite guitar moments, suits my way of thinking about guitar).

Marco's virtuosity and style displays best in this band. He is for Aristocrats; Mangini is for DT.

It's amazing how some music just firmly ties to a specific moment in your life even when you didn't expect it to. I used to listen to Flatlands when I was doing this crazy ass Silithus grind back in wow classic to get a trinket called Earthstrike. It actually took me several weeks to get it and all those frustrating hours after hours, Flatlands was there to be my faithful companion. And after all these years I come back to this and the memories hit deep man. Come to think of it, Flatlands is a song about flat lands with some tornado shit rampaging through and Silithus is also a barren and flat wasteland of meanacing bugs so that's where they meet I guess. Thank you Brian for this one in a lifetime experience.
