What happens when the world’s most raucous rock/fusion instrumental power trio decides to make a concept album? You get "DUCK", the story of a web-footed Antarctic island native fleeing a penguin policeman all the way to New York City…where considerable misadventure and danger await. The Aristocrats - Guthrie Govan/guitar, Bryan Beller/bass, Marco Minnemann/drums - have created a kaleidoscopic musical universe, employing both trademark genre pastiches and inventive new arrangement explorations - some surprisingly emotional and sensitive - to move the story along to its frantic conclusion. And while their obvious virtuosity and inherent absurdity are present as always, it’s now employed in service of the band’s most ambitious compositional and sonic production to date.
“We’ve always been writing with a storytelling aspect in mind, and our live shows always include our stories behind the songs,” says the band, speaking as one. “But the stories had mainly been about us. Then Marco came into the studio with a song about a duck, and we were all looked at each other and said, ‘What if all of stories for the songs on this album…happened to a duck? What’s that story about?’ And suddenly we had a concept album on our hands.”
The wildly diverse music follows the protagonist duck into a big city dance club (“Aristoclub”) to being forcibly ejected from a dive bar (“Hey, Where’s MY Drink Package?”) to a dark-riffed theme for his penguin pursuer (“Sgt. Rockhopper”), eventually concluding with the action-packed, Balkan-fusion finale “This Is Not Scrotum”, featuring violinist Rusanda Panfili (Hans Zimmer Live) as a rare Aristocrats album special guest.
Mixed by Australian sonic guru Forrester Savell, and with original character artwork by Lance Myers (Space Jam), "DUCK" is The Aristocrats’ first new studio album in five years. And it’s clear that Guthrie Govan, Bryan Beller and Marco Minnemann have taken their collective artistry to a whole new mindblowing - albeit ridiculous - level.

I saw these guys in Bratislava in november, came from Serbia to see them and it was so worth it. This was the second song of the show, before they played it Marco went on a 3 or so minute explanation on how he composed it. I was standing like 5 meters in front of Guthrie (beer in hand) and remember just being in awe, one of the best shows i've seen in my life.

they were so great live . right after i saw them i got to go see steve vai 4th row . i managed to get up to front row at the cats - for just the last song but i was about 5 rows on the side right by guthrie . i have to admit i was watching brian a lot tho . i love a great trio and they fit that bill . a GREAT trio ! dont miss these cats .

God i hope there is a world tour for this one. Need to see you live again. I found it very fresh and different from what you have done before. Sound wise , it sounds really up a notch compared to the previous albums. There is something about the overall ambience that sounds better to me, but i cant put my finger on it. Can't wait!! Forrester Savell is a sound god. He did the engineering for Karnivool's Sound Awake album. One of the best sounding albums I've ever heard. He did this one, and apparently the latest Caligula's Horse album, which sounds monumentally awesome.

Been a fan of GG ever since the Erotic Cakes release. And then onto The Aristocrats of course.Really was floored by Erotic Cakes and that style of writing and playing. The Aristocrats certainly are a great & unique band and each player is outstanding on their instrument. But this track sounds like more of the same from past Aristocrats albums.Not hearing much evolution in their writing and playing. Hopefully other tracks on the new album will change my mind. Still going to buy it and listen often as I always do with GG and all of the Aristocrats albums. ☮

No disrespect... You are almost correct my Brazilian friend : Guthrie writes everything - for example every note, bend and tone of Sweetwater (BB album) and the famous Regret#9 solo were written before performing and especially recording: yes when playing live they go "off piste" and jam and play off each other, but this is composed music not improvised. When I met them all backstage at the Venue in London touring album 1 I said to all 3 " the best thing about this band is that you are all" (they expected me to say Virtuosos/ so brilliant etc) "COMPOSERS... like you pull out all the stops writing for each other and it shows in every track" They were all surprised that I mentioned their composition skills not their playing but they key to it is they write almost impossible parts for each other to challenge each other and they all love that Guthrie said "Well thank you very much, that's very kind of you to say so..." and Marko and Bryan agreed - a lovely moment :-)
