Hebrew tradition was very clear: You do not utter the name of the Lord, you do not gaze upon the Lord, and you do not try to reach the realm of the Lord (as the people in Babel discovered). To do so is a great offense against the Lord, as you are showing great arrogance and no humility. Belloq and his pals chose poorly. 😱😱😱

Have to appreciate how Jones figured out what to do in this situation. He was likely thinking back to the image of the book and noticed that those who were holding the Ark had their faces turned _away_ from it while the opposing force were looking at it and being eradicated.
@Stogie2112
@Stogie2112 14 күн бұрын
Jones was also a professionally trained archaeologist and historian. He most probably already knew all about the ancient taboos and superstitions of the ancient Hebrews. He didn't believe any of it, but when the Ark started showing real supernatural powers, he did an about-face and told Marion to not look at it.

Apparently it is in the script that the old man who told Indiana and Sallah about the height of the Staff of Ra, also told them not to look at it if the Ark was opened. I don't think that the scene was ever shot.

Spielberg’s superpower as a filmmaker is that he can make movies that have heads exploding, hearts being ripped out of chests, people being eaten alive, and some how makes these movies “family friendly entertainment”. If anyone else made Raiders of The Lost Ark, that scene alone would have made it an R rated horror movie

The wide shot of the warehouse is mostly what they called a matte painting. The majority of the warehouse is a painting that is painted on glass. The only part left blank is the live action part of the scene. The guy pushing the Ark. The painting and the live action are merged in post production. Matte paintings were used in the OG Star Wars trilogy and prequels. Two scenes that they were used in ROTJ was the Death Star hangar bay where the Emperor arrives. The wide shot showing the entire hanger with thousands of Imperial troops wasn't real. Another matte painting was the wide shot of the hanger of Ackbar's flagship. With CGI now fully developed matte paintings have become a lost art.

The whole point of this scene is that you do not demand to see god and his power, and you are not allowed to. God is the one that decides on that, not people. That's why Indy closed his eyes and was saved. Back then, people joked that Indy had to do was to let them bring it to Hitler, so it would kill all nazi leaders lol; Looking forward to more reaction scenes from Indiana Jones :D, it has many funny and very well made scenes, especially on the third one.

Unlike most this scene didn't scare me as a kid. I was a precocious little nipper who was more interested in how they did it. The ghosts were double exposures of people moving about underwater. The melting faces were time lapses of wax models melting. The clouds were paint in water, but I can't remember for the life of me what they dropped into the paint to create the hole in the clouds, but obviously the clouds closing was that footage in reverse.

Uzzah, who was walking next to the cart, put out his hand to steady the ark from falling. “Then the anger of the LORD was aroused against Uzza, and He struck him because he put his hand to the ark; and he died there before God” Or another verse: "Out of curiosity the men of Beth-shemesh gazed at the Ark; and as a punishment, seventy of them (fifty thousand and seventy in some translations) were struck down by the Lord." It doesn't take much thought to debunk Amy's conclusions. If Indy didn't get the involved then the Nazis would've killed Marian stolen the headpiece and found the Ark. Then without Indy to sabotage the plane and trucks the Nazis would've taken the Ark to Berlin. Where Belloq would perform the ritual and get everyone involved killed. But then the Ark would remain in the Nazis hands and they would probably spend years cruelly sacrificing lives trying to get it to work because they are short sighted relentless dickheads. Indy and Marion ensured that the Ark would get back to the states where it is arguably safely locked away again.

The idea of not looking at God's wrath was inspired by the Bible story of Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot and his wife must leave the sinful city of Gomorrah and not look back at God destroying the city. For if they looked back, they would be killed as well by God turning their bodies to pillars of salt. Unfortunately for Lot's wife, her curiousity got the better of her. I wonder if the Raiders story would have been better if Indy turned at the end of the destruction scene, and found Marion gone as well (her curiousity getting the better of her). Would it have been ultra dramatic to see Indy standing there all alone? Well, but then again, who would help him carry the Ark back! 😂 Sorry, just thinking aloud.

Something like this actually happened. Although not in the Hollywood graphic style. The Bible records that a man named "Uzzah" touched the Ark of the Covenant of GOD, violating His direct law which was punishable by immediate death. When Uzzah touched it, the Lord struck him dead immediately. (1 Chronicles 13:5-14)

The unknown men who wrote the Book of Chronicles claimed that it happened. There is no evidence of it ever happening.

@@Stogie2112 In addition, the faithless skeptic should know that the Bible is a reliable collection of historical documents (Byzantine), written by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses who report supernatural events that took place in fulfillment of specific prophecies and claim their writings are Divine rather than human in origin.
