This is like when we were young in the 70s and 80s, watching a movie from the 20s or 30s. We knew nothing about those movies. So apply that logic today, you can still find people who haven't known. Per stories at the time, all copies of the script except two actually read "Obi Wan killed your father". Even David Prowse, physically playing Vader, had false dialog so he could make the gestures desired, but did not know the reveal. James Earl Jones knew, if course, so did Hamill. And Hamill had a doctored script like the others until just befire this scene, so in case Hsmill left his script laying around, anybody reading it would also not see the twist. So far as I know, neither of the real scripts was ever on the market, but they would bring a lot of money.

There was a very old Simpson's episode where Homer. And marge described the late seventies and how in nineteen eighty they saw Empire. Homer is so stupid walking out of the theatre. He says it nice and out loud to Marge.About the big secret they just learned watching the movie and everybody in line Is angry with him and he is clueless about why.

I was five when I started getting into Star Wars. Unfortunately before seeing this someone let it slip that Darth Vader is “Skywalker’s father.” Even so, I was still blown away by the delivery of this line.

That is like Hitler saying that he is your father

Back in 1980, we all thought Vader was lying. No one believed it. It wasn't until Return of the Jedi, three years later, that we learned the truth. That was a bitch of a wait.

As a life long fan I'm obviously enjoying this. But what I find interesting is that we all know the famous line, but these new viewers pick up on a main part that we dont often talk about, that he wants to overthrow the emperor.

There are several vids of parents showing Star Wars to their kids (usually ages 5 to 8 or so) for the first time and their reactions are epic when they find out Darth is Luke's father. You should add their's too.

He was Leia's(?) father also. Luke and her are brother & sister.

When they filmed it the line said was "Obi-Wan killed your father." Only George Lucas, Irvin Kershner and Mark Hamill knew the true line.

In 1983, the world let out a collective gasp, except for the Dutch who sat back somewhat bemused and said, "I don't get it... why are people so surprised? It's right in his name!"

In 1980. Return of the Jedi came out in 1983.

That joke has never been funny or made sense. Darth Vader cleraly isn't named in dutch, and "vader" in Dutch is pronounced "fader" (very close to "father"), and absolutely nothing like Darth Vader ("veyderr"). Unless the Dutch person in an American cinema was watching the movie on mute with nothing but subtitles, assuming all the names were supposed to be in dutch, then no one would ever assume that.

Even though this movie came out in the 70s this younger generation never knew Luke's father only in memes or other television shows. But back then the public was so amazed at the Darth Vader and Luke characters George Lucas decided to do a back story of the origins of Darth Vader.

EVERYONE KNOWS THIS LINE. Even if you’ve never seen Star Wars, you know this line. Respect to the reactors that acknowledged it. The ones that acted surprised are straight up acting. Maybe not all but there’s a few that are clear acting. I only say this because it’s the most famous line/movie scene of all time.

This is why Star Wars should be watched starting with Episode 3, in the order of the theatrical releases. You miss out on this moment watching from Ep. 1.
