I watch reactions for this maybe once a year and 99% of them the people already know. but the thing is, we have to remember these movies are approaching 50 years old. This is like when we were young in the 70s and 80s, watching a movie from the 20s or 30s. We knew nothing about those movies. So apply that logic today, you can still find people who haven't known. We sit here thinking it should be common knowledge. I mean... it's almost 50 years. It's been too long.

starting to be skeptical of the people in these comments talking about how they saw this in the theaters. This twist was hugely mocked by movie critics and the movie was panned. It got the prequel treatment until Rotj came out and was more of a cult classic. It took years for empire to get the credit it deserved

I remember reading that Mark Hamill had to sign a non-disclosure agreement with LucasFilm prior to this famous scene, and Mark waited nearly 18 months until Empire Strikes Back premiered in 1980. Harrison Ford and other cast mates were surprised of the "twist". Harrison even says to Mark, "Hey kid!" "Why didn't you tell me?!" after the film ended

Per stories at the time, all copies of the script except two actually read "Obi Wan killed your father". Even David Prowse, physically playing Vader, had false dialog so he could make the gestures desired, but did not know the reveal. James Earl Jones knew, if course, so did Hamill. And Hamill had a doctored script like the others until just befire this scene, so in case Hsmill left his script laying around, anybody reading it would also not see the twist. So far as I know, neither of the real scripts was ever on the market, but they would bring a lot of money.

Still blows my mind that they made a sequel to the biggest movie of all time that was a fun story of a young hero who saves a princess and wins the battle against the evil villain and instead of doing it again (which is what the audience was expecting). Had the bad guys win and laid on the biggest plot twist in cinema history. The bad guys winning just didn’t really happen in cinema back then. So to do it in the sequel to the biggest movie of all time was so brave. So perfect. Top 5 greatest movie of all time.

In reality, this twist was panned when it happened. Empire Strikes Back got the prequel treatment when it was released and this twist actually turned people off. It took a few years and ROTJ for people to come around on Empire strikes back, so I also have a hard time believing people in the comments talking about how they saw this in the theaters. It's like 20 years from now, everyone saying Attack of the Clones is the best star wars movie and how everyone who saw it in the theaters couldn't believe what happened and they were in shock. I find it so funny how old this movie is. And people still have no clue Darth Vader is Luke and Leia's father. And I seen this movie back in the 80s when it was in Theaters. The Shock Value was insane. Still to this day Empire Strikes Back is my favorite SW movie.

This scene... this one, singular scene.... this was the moment that got me into Star Wars. In episode IV, when Owen says he's afraid Luke will end up like his father, we the audience are left to believe that Luke will die at the hands of Vader. But this new context adds a huge layer on everything. Owen is afraid Luke will turn to the dark side.

I was in the theatre for this. The whole place gasped over that. It was THE culturally defining moment. So much so that it’s STILL going all these decades later….

"I am your father" is perhaps the single most famous line in all of cinema. At least in the Western world. I'm always surprised to see people who are shocked to find out about it. A few of them even seemed to know the line, but just never put two and two together until they saw the actual scene.

By the time Empire was released we were told James Earl Jones played the voice of Darth Vader, while others did the character motions, including the fighting.

Even before I ever watched Star Wars., I knew that famous line cu damn near everything referenced it. And this was back in like 2003 or 2004. The fact that there are supposedly grown ass people who never even knew or heard the reference is honestly absurd. I would just relate he believe it’s clickbait cuz it’s just such a household reference that you couldn’t have possibly heard it

There was a very old Simpson's episode where Homer. And marge described the late seventies and how in nineteen eighty they saw Empire. Homer is so stupid walking out of the theatre. He says it nice and out loud to Marge.About the big secret they just learned watching the movie and everybody in line Is angry with him and he is clueless about why.

Back in 1980, we all thought Vader was lying. No one believed it. It wasn't until Return of the Jedi, three years later, that we learned the truth. That was a bitch of a wait.

As a life long fan I'm obviously enjoying this. But what I find interesting is that we all know the famous line, but these new viewers pick up on a main part that we dont often talk about, that he wants to overthrow the emperor.

In 1983, the world let out a collective gasp, except for the Dutch who sat back somewhat bemused and said, "I don't get it... why are people so surprised? It's right in his name!"

That joke has never been funny or made sense. Darth Vader cleraly isn't named in dutch, and "vader" in Dutch is pronounced "fader" (very close to "father"), and absolutely nothing like Darth Vader ("veyderr"). Unless the Dutch person in an American cinema was watching the movie on mute with nothing but subtitles, assuming all the names were supposed to be in dutch, then no one would ever assume that.

Even though this movie came out in the 70s this younger generation never knew Luke's father only in memes or other television shows. But back then the public was so amazed at the Darth Vader and Luke characters George Lucas decided to do a back story of the origins of Darth Vader.

EVERYONE KNOWS THIS LINE. Even if you’ve never seen Star Wars, you know this line. Respect to the reactors that acknowledged it. The ones that acted surprised are straight up acting. Maybe not all but there’s a few that are clear acting. I only say this because it’s the most famous line/movie scene of all time.
