I have lived in Brisbane for 23 years now, and have worked all over the city. Watching your channel has opened my eyes to some hidden gems and facts.

Thanks for the Runcorn walk through, Rob. If you had continued down Gowan Road, you would have passed Brady Bushland park, named after my family - my late mother in particular. My parents were instrumental in having this area preserved as a bushland reserve, although these days its rather ratty and a shadow of it's former self. They would hold spotlighting evenings for members of a wildlife preservation group they were part of, which is a fond memory of mine. We lived in Noraville Street, Runcorn, near the border with Stretton (moved from Moorooka when I was about 4 y.o. c1972). That bushland, which used to stretch on pretty wide, was ours to roam and have many adventures. Most of that area is almost unrecognisable now from those days, but I still often visit and reminisce. Oh and fresh cream buns from "Runcorn All Hours" was always a weekend staple at our house!

I used to walk from runcorn high to all hours and get hot chips and walk back. It was a water tank on the corner of purse and beenleigh rd

I went to Runcorn High from 2001 to 2005 and studied Film & TV there. Not sure when it got added in to the curriculum. After I left they sold part of the school grounds to build a community pool with the agreement that the school had exclusive use.

@@shutterbug8860, I don't think so, he's never mentioned any contacts from Runcorn, he kept to himself finishing as high as he could academically, friends where a minimum as it was a particularly dark period for him. He wasn't a sport person which Runcorn is well known for

Love the video. I was born in Jan 1986 and lived in Kuraby and Runcorn until 7 years ago. The old house on the corner of Persse Rd and Beenleigh Rd used to be the old station masters house. It burnt down about 15 years ago, I believe. Can't wait for the next video.

Fantastic video - I lived in Runcorn around the corner from you. I lived there from 84-95. Brings back so many memories. My mum taught at runcorn and warrigal rd primary schools. I was a foundation student at runcorn high in 86. Runcorn all hours had ginos pizza (the ex owner is a friend of mine) on the end, video store, post office, bakery, butcher, doctor and convenience store from memory. We played in bushland all over the area which is now mostly lost to development. Thoroughly enjoyed that trip down memory lane. Cheers

Thank you for this video. I lived on Lindis St and went to Runcorn State School. When I saw the Progress Hall I teared up! I danced there from about 1975 with the Suzanne Harvey Dancers until she moved us to the Shauna Downs Shops. My grandfather also devined for water at the Souths United Soccer Club. Very proud day when the water rushed up. We shared the first drink of water there

The plant nursery on the corner of Beenleigh and Gowan Road was called "Plants Plus Greenworld". I think it shut down sometime in 2017.

We moved from Sydney to Sunnybank Hills in 1983 - so not far from you, and we stomped all over those same parks. We used to call the creek running down alongside Gowan Road separating Runcorn from Sunnybank Hills the 'Criver' - because in places it was almost like a small river. We use to swim in it, catch yabbies, turtles etc We moved out to Regents Park at the end of 85 but fate would bring me back to Runcorn and I have been working there for the past almost 20 years now. One bit of history you missed - the old quarries on the NORTH side of Compton Road, where the archives are now, used to be a huge hang out spot in the 50's to 70's for young people to race their bikes and cars and bring their girlfriends ;) The water filled quarry south of Compton Road was a lot of fun for the latter, especially after closing time at Roxxanes or Sunnies in the 80's and 90's :)

The crane behind the Warrigal farm is being used to build the Brisbane Islamic Centre. Quite a large mosque.

Rob did a walk a while back, that came along logan road, and pointed out at the top end of millers road, you have a chinese temple, the Seventh day adventists, a lutheran church, a sikh temple, a korean christian church, a mosque, and a catholic church. all in close proximity. Must be some religious significance to that (or cheap real estate). Of course, the more important place of worship is just down the road - the Glen Hotel, on Gaskell Street. Back in the 1970s I dated a girl, whose dad had a farm on Gaskell Street. That was well and truly bush back then.

Lived in Underwood,, for a few years recently - opposite McCorkells Lagoon - apparently the McCorkells ran massive lettuce farms in the area. Your point on Agricultural reserves has prompted me to do some more research. My Great Grandfather (Harold) was QLD director of Agriculture from 1915 to 1931, and Headmaster of Gatton college prior to that, so would have had a lot of defining influence on the Agriculture in QLD. I know that the State Library has copies of several things he wrote, and no doubt the state archives, might have more.

Mate I am a new subscriber, I lived in Fruitgrove in the 80s. John Sattler was the publican at the Runcorn tavern. I grew up in Coorparoo my dad is the late Dr H.P. Flanagan his practice was Cavendish Rd Clinic Coorparoo. My wife went to Sunnybank High Natalie Pettit was her name.

I remember that blue overall guy, used to call him mister walker. After a guy in Perth who used to walk around there, but that mister walker had a walking stick. Yeah after a while you would see less and less of the blue overall guy, until he was gone.

Hey Rob, I’m born n bred from Carindale. My parents, grandparents, rellies, gf, mates, sporting clubs, hangouts are from coorparoo/Camp Hill/Carina/cannon Hill/Mt Gravatt, Sunnybank, Runcorn My father and grandfather along with uncles hand built the first house for Carindale just over the hill on creek Rd from Carindale shopping centre. For nearly 50 yrs I have seen all of Sthside from change and transform from tight knit communities to dangerous no go zones to rich development.

Growing up in Sydney in the 70s and 80s, I had already seen how developers swooped on land and housing quickly replaced cow paddocks. Fast forward to 1990 and I went to Greenbank for a week or so with the Army - even 40km from the centre of Brisbane, I couldn't believe that such a massive area was almost all bushland. It would be interesting to see Brissie, Logan and Ipswich in a hundred years - I suspect that they will have to embrace highrise to house a population boom that shows no sign of easing off. Greenbank now has, unfortunately, become home to several developments that we call 'legoland'. Essentially thousands of small blocks such as 400m2 instead of the minimum of 2000m2 (which were still rare, the normal minimum was 4000m2+). The prices on these small blocks start from about $300k and the larger 4000m2 in other developments at double that. The military camp underwent an upgrade or sorts some years back to house a general reserve transport unit on the school side where many of the wooden barracks buildings were originally.

Runcorn All Hours also had a hot bread shop (next to the chemist I think) when I lived in 'Runcorn Heights" near Condamine Street and Nemies Road in the early 1990's. My 2 sons attended Runcorn State High in the late 1980's early 1990's.

I seriously need to visit Runcorn again. I hid out there for a few months at a mates house to get away from a DV situation. I had the best sushi of my life there. I only have fond memories because it was the safest I had felt in 5 years while I was there. I haven't been there in years though. The possum was a super cute touch too!

lol, I think you don’t know enough of Runcorn even to this day it’s riddled with gangs and crime. There was even gang shootings and 1 even died there in the carpark of the now iga and markets. In my days 80’s-90’s was a big hotbed for Aussie bogans and migrants gang fights and hookups.. I live at Mt Gravatt east now and I usually go there to have Korean food, it’s a nice place but wouldn’t live there even at this present time. My eldest son lives there and he says from time to time it’s not safe to walk the streets especially Daw Rd.

In the 60’s I remember travelling from Zillmere All Stars to play soccer against Runcorn 2/ year. No idea why we were in the same competition. An enormous journey we had to have a stop on. Many kids in dad’s Holden 64 station wagon. Maybe even had to buy petrol.

The place that you mentioned on Gowan Rd. was a Landscaping yard and a very good one, but the next place, with all the green shade cloth, that you said may have been a market garden, I can never remember that being the case in the last 50 years, but the point that I wanted to make is that, that rather small high set house was owned by a guy that was obviously owned by a brickie, I have watched that with interest over at least 50 years, he must have decided to brick around that house, as there were piles and piles of bricks in that yard and slowly ever so slowly he bricked around the house, but alas as time went on he obviously got older and never was able to finish the job, ad maybe 10 year ago he passed away without ever completing the job it was then sold and all the brickwork pulled down. Directly opposite that end of Gowan Rd there is like an office building on the top side about 2 houses up there is a 2 story highset brick home, I can remember that house being built as what we called a "spec" home, built by a builder to sell on, I can remember that house being up for sale for $12500 how prices have changed.

Two different houses, I know the one you're talking about. But the one he showed here is sandwiched in between a drain/creek out the back on a triangular block where the driveway was between the railway line and the main road. It always stood out to me as in why build there.

I know that bridge over Bulimba Creek! The dog park is just on the other side of it. My dog used to always want to sniff at the water, and one day he got too excited and JUMPED in Oh man did he reek, which was weird because he was otherwise terrified of water And back in the early 90s there was a farm over to the northeast (just over the bridge) who had a truly MASSIVE pig, I think they named him Bacon or something RIP Bacon

That was so weird watching you walk away from Eiley St from the shops toward your old house. That's a bunch of memories, I was at 10 Eiley from 2009-2011. You were right about the corner shops, at the front was First National Real Estate (that's where I paid the rent) next a fish and chip shop and then a video rental shop on its last days... it was a dying business then. There was an Indian restaurant in the corner and a small pharmacy next.

the house on the corner of perse burnt down early 00s i think - it was there when i was in highschool in the late 90s, but i dont recall it being there much later than that. The wedge house across from the old nursery was flooded twice and then burnt down in the last 5ish years

I can't believe that you did my neighbourhood. I was living in Glenefer Street about 12 years ago before buying my current house on the other side of the railway tracks. The residents staying near the foundry complains about the smell during the evenings and even claim that it's cancerous. I'm on the border of Eight Mile Plains and Runcorn and where I am, thankfully I don't get the smell of the foundry in the evenings. You are right about the United servo at the junction of Gowan and Beenleigh Road. There was a landscaping shop and they had a big sale before it closed down. I visited that shop to get some mulch for my home. Thank you for the video because I know more about my neighbourhood and I didn't know about the gangs too.

Loved this video - thanks. The farm in city life is one of the beautiful things to drive past and for the children to see. You can see the farm cycles of activity over the year, the plantings, the cows, soil turned over ready for next things to grow, the horses from the pony club can be seen sometimes and its something to be grateful about to see that type of thing all the year around. Enjoyed the video.

Excellent historical wander round Runcorn, while you were at school in the 80's I was running amok at the Kuraby, Rogues, Calamvale, the Glen and various locals party pads. Great times, was a bit more out of the way and rural back then. Oh and that Pony Club, did 80 hours community service there back in the day, The bloke in charge of us was a total tyrant. Anyways once again an excellent bit of cinemaphotography and narration Rob... Cheers.

I wouldn't be parking up under that gum tree with the yellow caution tape around it for too long lol..seeing that snapped limb lol ..they have the nickname widow maker for a reason...had one flatten my campsite (10man tent double hightop airbeds, eskys tables chairs..after fishing two days in a 3 day comp first two days howling wind on/off rain...was gonna stay a 3rd but was over hearing the tent flapping all night with Wooooooo spooky ghost wind sounds lol...got up earlier next morning to go pull the crab pots before packing up site..came back and everything was under a giant limb except the car... people around who heard us or seen us leave said if we had been in the tent 20 minutes later we'd be crushed...took a team of workers to clear just the limb up

Here in Canberra, there are also signs around warning of getting swooped by magpies. Maybe Sydney is too overdeveloped for that way of life?

haha, used to get the bus at Stretton, other end of gowan rd and honeysuckle. Remember my first day at uni 2004, not getting off at the right stop and walking onwards into the bush. Was a funny old hut and what seemed like a hermit living there. All been bought up and built now.

I worked at the foundry in 2010-12 doing "plumbing" maintenance on anything and everything that needed fixing, sure was dirty work.
