Nearly 100 years since the end of the conflict that shaped our world. Edit: It is now November 11, 2018. 100 years have passed since that devastating conflict from which we still feel the effects. Rest in Peace all of those who lost their lives.

The last american killed - Henry Gunther got up, against the orders of Sergeant Ernest Powell, and charged with his bayonet. The German soldiers were aware of the Armistice and that it would take effect in one minute, so tried to wave Gunther away. He was shot in a short burst of automatic fire and killed instantly when he continued to charge. Some say he did it because of his recent demotion, others because he wanted to prove his patriotism because of his German - American background.

As the 100 year anniversary of the end of WWII draws nearer, we will probably see an advancement in anti-aging technology. Even today there are some pills that can slightly make you live longer if you haven them daily. Plenty of people, if not already working on it, are trying to get the funding to work on anti-aging technology. There is a chance that the technology will be advanced enough to keep these veterans from dying by the 100 year anniversary of World War II.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. Fun fact: When Germany defeated France in World War 2, "Hitler viewed the choice of location (Compiegne) as a supreme moment of revenge for Germany over France. On 21 June 1940, Hitler visited the site to start the negotiations which took place in the very same railway carriage in which the 1918 Armistice was signed (it had just been removed from a museum building and placed on the precise spot where it was located in 1918). Hitler sat in the same chair in which Marshal Ferdinand Foch had sat when he faced the defeated German representatives. After listening to the reading of the preamble, Hitler left the carriage in a calculated gesture of disdain for the French delegates, and negotiations were turned over to Wilhelm Keitel, the Chief of Staff of OKW." @@coniston3106 Very unlikely that he joined in 1914. There are records of 16-year-olds who joined the army, but it was not that easy to do so. Legal age in Germany at that time was 21, so you had to have the permission of your father in order to do anything you were not allowed to as a minor. So, our assumed last german soldier who died in the war would have had to lie with his age (which I think would be quite difficult with 14 to convince anyone you are actually 16 oder even older) and fake his father's permission. Although the military administration relied heavily on volunteers in the early days of the war, I can imagine that they were strict with the regulations of the time nonetheless. But fun fact: One of those 16-year-olds who joined the war right from the start was Reinhold Wildenhayn from Dresden. His father gave permission without hesitation. He became part of the 5th Company of the 241st Infantery Regiment of the Reserve. The unit fought in the First Battle of Ypres, but had to retreat soon. Wildenhayn was taken prisoner unharmed in December 1914. He survived the war in french captivity and would live for another 66 years.

Apparently, Gunther was demoted for writing a letter to a friend back in the US encouraging him to avoid being drafted at all costs due to the miserable conditions. His letter was vetted and demoted as a result. The German soldiers even tried to warn him away and only shot him when he got dangerously close, so it was definitely self-defence.

@Provocateur Thing is, those people only served their commanders as much as they could. Think of it. The Armenian Genocide was carried out by the Ottoman goverment, not by the soldiers themselves. The air raids were also carried out under the discretion of their commanders. They did not want to kill innocent citizens in any way. The soldiers were all humans who still had emotions. WW2 would not see this however. The soldiers' opinions were never taken seriously. Many leaders of this time were people who were deeply affected by the traumatic events of WW1. No wonder, the German chancellor was so anti-semetic. The war itself had traumatized every soldier who had to serve on the Western Front and Eastern Front. This kind of trauma leads to extreme perceptions of the world (like the false rumours that said the Jews were the reason Germany lost) One thing I will say. The soldiers who died for their country should be praised. Not insulted.

Do you realize a ruined industry along with millions of casualties (1.4m dead and 4m wounded), along with almost 2 million internal refugees can be problematic for a nation of 38 million and it might therefore need payment from its invading neighbor, neighbor that has the biggest industry in Europe that has been left intact during the war? Doesn't that apply for basically anything? Anything big in history that involved millions of people has definitely changed something that we still see. I mean, think about world without christianity, or a world where Germany or Italy never unified, or one where India wasn't british RAJ, or one where portugal never controlled the spice trade or one where spain never got to america first. Everything affects everything, and that's why history is so intresting. If you go down the road of thinking about it, had for instance king of spain never funded columbus, or where orthodoxes and christians never broke apart, our life with russia for example would be so different, but it's so little things that cause those things, therefore so little could have also prevented them and then create a set of new possible outcomes like french empire of entire south america and therefore US never getting its' independence for instance, or India becoming rich independent state hsd portuguese not stolen its spice! I mean, you never know.

In my country the Great War defines us. We entered out of obligation to the British Empire. By war's end, we came back a nation of great courage and daring in the eyes of the world. The Second Battle of Ypres, the Somme Offensive, the Battle of Vimy Ridge, the Battle of Passchendaele, the Battle of Amiens, the Battle of Hill 70 and Lens, the Battle of Cambrai, the Second Battle of Mons, and the Hundred Days. I thank all the brave men who sacrificed everything so I can live free and call myself Canadian. That's something I can never repay. Thank you Arthur Curry for leading us through the hellish perils of that horrible war. Thank you to all those who made it and those who didn't. I say thank you to the Allies and the Triple Alliance for realizing that peace needed to be made. I joined the Royal Canadian Legion in March of this year because I want to do my best to repay the sacrifice those men made. And I shall never forget.

It's been 100 years since the guns fell silent on the Western front. all fighting ceased and soon we all realise how war can rip apart ones life in a short amount of time. Soldiers, both the allied and the axis, fought ferociously for the sake of their countries and were killed. Both mentally and physically by the Violence's of war, too young to fight and too young to die. Let those who fought bravely and died heroically rest in eternal peace Lest We Forget
