Dear Claudio This vid reminds me of my youth 46 years ago. My brother gave me a Roland SH-2 back then. Then I was so hooked on synthesizers that I went to work every free time to buy synths; the Odyssey and then the sequencer... then the 2600, System 100 and then the DX7. Unfortunately I sold almost everything together and stopped to make music. I gave the Odyssey and the sequencer to a friend as a gift. What I find totally fascinating are the phase shifts of the oscillators and the unique fat bass sound. But the filters and cutoff can also be killers for the speakers... which is how I killed my Yamaha monitors with the Odyssey..I always find that Kraftwerk worked with ARP sounds in the early days...And when Tony Banks plays on the Quadra, I logically see the Odyssey in it...Typical ARP! In any case, I got chicken skin and tears in my eyes to see and hear you play!!! THX for the trip down in my memory lane🙏💪👍👍👍👍👍💚

The ARP oscillators really have a distinct sound. I got a 2600M last year and have gotten my ears a lot more tuned into recognizing it on records. The Odyssey has many of the same sonic characteristics; love it!

They really do! They have a certain top-end clarity that things like Moogs didn't have, and yet they were still sweeter than later Japanese monosynths from KORG, Roland, and Yamaha.

For one glorious summer back in the 1980s, I had an ARP Odyssey on loan, a Mark II, and it was a wonderful summer! I loved detuning the two oscillators from each other for a really phat sound. Nice to see one of your episodes devoted to the Odyssey!

I had the OG MkII back in college and, being in college, sold it for many times what I paid for it. But missed it ever since! So I am extremely pleased I was able to get a good deal on the Korg MkII reissue. They did such a superb job with it; absolutely brings back the magic of the original!

Nice demo, Doctor.!!! I have a Behringer Odyssey, and they did a great job of reproducing it. Nice extras on it, and much more road worthy. Much more of a learning curve on it than my Minimoog, though. Of course, it was to be expected because ARP was in direct competition with Moog and wanted to be different as possible with their synths, right down to encapsulation of their modules in epoxy...(paranoid of someone copying their designs).

Notice how timeless and clear the interface is designed. If somebody told me it was 2024 or 2000, I wouldn't have any doubts.

I like the way you switched from mapping out the Odyssey’s features to launch into the 3 jams. Also, the neatest part is when you paired it up with the Minimoog. I’ve owned 2 ARP synthesizers since I was 20 in 2000, an Axxe Mk II and a Korg Odyssey duplicate. I’ve enjoyed the Odyssey clone more by far than I enjoyed the Axxe, not on.y for the second oscillator and all its tone-shaping possibilities. This one hasn’t got that dopey, protruding keyboard on the Mark III version of the ARP product line. That made the Axxe a sheer headache during the 6 1/2 years it was in my possession (during which the highest A never worked right).

I always think of the great Billy Currie of Ultravox when talking about the ARP Odyssey. Dave Formula of Magazine and Visage also got some amazing sounds out of it. Simple yet powerful not unlike the Minimoog but with a very different character.

I recently watched a video with Herbie Hancock where he discusses the Odyssey bass in Chameleon. He initially recorded a MiniMoog then decided to record it again using the ARP. He wanted to pan each bass recorded left and right, no one was sure if it would sound right but he said it worked fantastic but due to recording track limitations at the time went with the Odyssey and released it in '72. He said they also re-recorded the panned bass but didn't say if they released it or not.

@@ingolf7411 well, what you say it’s true, but as the mini Moog became the “standard” UI, the Ody can be tricky for many, especially in the (not common) modulation compartment. Let’s say if you do basic things it’s quite easy, but if you wanna go deep you can… then take a picture!😁

Still a really cool synth, especially as it was my first one (naja, the Behringer clone...). Do you know the Dutch trio The Keyboard Circle? It consisted of 2 keyboard players (Rob Franken & Jan Huydts) , both with a Rhodes and ARP ODYSSEY, with Henk Zomer on drums. They made a kind of funky jazz in the 1970s, in 2008, the recordings of a live concert were found and released as the album "1976", I can recommend to listen it! In between the songs, you sometimes hear them tune the Odysseys. They were also the reason I decided to buy an Odyssey as my first synth, during Covid, as an extension to my Rhodes. BTW: what would you think about an Odyssey vs. MiniMoog video?
