The Wild West Extravaganza

Күн бұрын

August 1903. The famous Annie Oakley is arrested in Chicago for theft, a crime committed in order to obtain money to fuel her cocaine habit. And what a headline that made. America’s original sweetheart, the tiny sharpshooter who once entertained kings and queens, is now reduced to petty thievery. It wasn’t long before newspapers throughout the country began to report on this fall from grace. Enter William Randolph Hearst, son of mining tycoon George Hearst, who ruled a media empire and had his eye on the white house. There was no story too sensational or salacious for him to print, the truth be damned. What happens when the darling of the Wild West Show goes to war with one of the most powerful men in the country? A man with very deep pockets and an army of Pinkertons? Did Annie Oakley even have a chance at clearing her name? Find out on this girl power episode of The Wild West Extravaganza! #wildwest #history #western

I always thought Frank Butler taught Annie all the trick shooting, as he was very good at it. Letting her show off her skills every so often became more and more popular and eventually he just stood aside and managed the business and promotions. A woman that's very skilled at something normally associated with a man was a novelty. Still is.

@@WildWestExtravaganza you are more than welcome. Dwight Yoakum could play Kit if he would have layed off the fry bread 20 years ago. As far as the subject at hand when I saw the thumbnail for the video I stopped and literall had the same thoughts you did about her story I guess its no fun unless people get killed so we can tell stories about it but hell, I was impressed after about 5 minutes that you had me interested even with my predetermined judgment on how it was gonna play out. Hell of a job and like uncle Jim Vance said on the Hatfields and McCoys, "you hit the nail right on the goll dang head" once again guey.

I know this one was an exception to your rules of subject matter. But thanks for putting it out there. Worthy content. I had already known this story I was under the impression that she traveled to many courthouses to pursue her defamation lawsuit. And that her arrival into a designated community was met with such fanfare and appreciation by the town Folk that it made it difficult for any judge to be bribed against her if the judge wish to retain his seat. Thanks again for your wonderful oration. Fellow oral historian Studs Terkel would be proud of you.

@@WildWestExtravaganza wow, I got a reply from the man himself. OK. One of the adoptive families Annie was sent to had the sir name "Wolf" Annie referred to them as "the wolves". Buffalo Bill Cody had originally wanted Annie in a scantily clad little outfit. She would have none of it. She designed her own outfit. Annie set the standard and ideal for American beauty and gumption by not succumbing to the fantasies of her audience. It is her image that writers, producers, directors, and starlets still aspire to in the quintessential American Woman. By the way 1783 looks to be a bad ass series check it out. P.S. I am presently working on a historical extrapolation screen play set in Chicago spanning the years 1919 thru 1933. And have some extra knowledge on John Dillinger. I'm at R.Chauncey1919@gmail.com

Sean Penn should not star as Kit Carson - he should be putting his backside where his worthless mouth runs wild and take up the rifle in Ukraine and practice what he preaches. I live here across from the Moses homestead in North Star, Ohio. Darke county by the way. Pronounced Dark. Enjoyed your take on her. She was born on Spencer rd. , Like the Carbine..Lots of folks around here remember stories of her from their Great Grandparents and such. Word is She was very much a lady. At the time Women were not allowed in bars. They were for men , Her husband Frank would brink her along at times and the local women were jealous of this fact. Some slammed her for this but that was just the times when only loose women would be found in a saloon. She sold the game shot on my land for food and extra money. We grew up hunting here and like her, We would have to have game for every cartridge we fired when we returned home. No careless or recreational firing of guns. They were a tool for a purpose and ammo was precious. The Garst museum in Greenville Ohio is co opperated by the Cody museum in Colorado. It houses her and Lowell Tomas's life collections. Worth the trip. The famous Madrite sandwich shop is down the street. Best to you !

I know I'm late to the party but I'm gonna back your idea of Jeremy Renner as Kit Carson. Gotta say Tim Blake Nelson is a solid second after Old Henry. As far as Annie Oakley goes they should give someone new a chance like they did with Hailee Steinfeld (thanks to google for the spelling) in True Grit so at least there's a chance it doesn't turn into a pop music video. You say this isn't your typical fare but like so many others I agree this was very good and kind of is your typical fare. Because you know your audience. I learned that rule during my short career as a reporter and to me not much has changed since Hearst. This, as usual, was lots of fun. Much appreciated.

Bro all that happened here in Chicago a city even to this day is rotten to the core so what can you expect. During Annie's time around 1893 the time of our world's fair there was a book describing this city most accurately titled 'If CHRIST came to Chicago.' Chicago was burned down during the War of 1812 when it was Fort Dearborn, again in 1871 The Great Chicago Fire, the race riots of 1919, Prohibition Era gangsters, riots of the 1960's and so on. Even now Illinois is the most corrupt state in the Union, the most expensive and the state most folks are leaving so homie here it is. Great podcast! Little Miss Sure Shot is a personal hero of mine. I'm a women and I agree with Anne we have some women who I'd rather not be voting. however the thought of my own voice being repressed is a hard to imagine. However if even mine was repressed, I guess I'd have to remain in the role of many women of the past. Id have to plead my case to my father or husband or brothers...if my view points made sense and did in fact seem like a responsible good way to vote... having the filter of the men who I love and respect, doesn't seem so terrible. Considering it might stop the bad emotional filled false narratives of the clueless women.... I say revoke em....however I don't fear the guidance of the men I love. I do fear the control of a man who is not capable. Who is not God fearing, who is little more then a man then I myself am..I do fear the men who are not interested in the restoration of a life that was not so easy for men. The men I see making money by selectively picking clueless women who are making terrible life choices and protraaying all women I this light those men scare me they would rather see those women exploited so they can comment on it then any action at all to not watch porn to sleep around but expect a pure virgin. Those men i think would care little about weather my voice had worth as they would rather do whats easy and good for them. placing the fall of our society at their feet... if only those men cared for a life that made them worthy of the respect and position a man should hold... so where to start I don't know I'm just a women ask a man lol
