Betting shops etc has a history of damage to addicts, something that we have not heard about with the lottery. The issue was well spoken about on Paul Merson's documentary on Netflix regarding his issues and other people's addiction. The idea that betting has caused damage to football for years in regards of "match fixing", it is funny that the football world then accepted sponsorship from random overseas betting companies. I think a sports writer done investigation into many of these companies. Very murky world.

My only argument is we the people are pumping (losing) money to these companies who then circulate the money back into football by sponsoring the clubs so technically speaking it’s the people betting that are sponsoring just in a unorthodox manner. People make the choice to bet but if your in the game you know you shouldn’t be it’s as simple as that. That’s why their is advice lines for gambling propelled by People like Merson as there wasn’t much things out like that when he was playing. The message is very clear from companies, like bet within limits and if the fun stops etc. We bet amongst ourselves as we’re in a competitive world betting companies just make it more fancy, that’s all

@@CaptainPresence ah yes but that goes to a bigger conversation, more than in the comments about addiction and how some companies "further entice" those that have addictive issues, no matter how many times they advertise help (a bit like the cigarette box topic). Yeah, I get it, for responsible people who have the odd bet here and there, it seems harmless and much ado about nothing. It's not a easy topic because of whatever view and stand point you take on these subjects.

Love the show Tom and love how it became the only daily routine that never changes lol I just have two points about today’s episode i wanted to share. 1- It was so nice to see the picture of Kai and Martin together. To know our players not only have “relationships and connections” on the pitch, but also outside of it. And so much so that they go on vacations together! Really loved seeing that. 2- Well said on the betting companies sponsoring the sport. It’s still so weird to see in stadiums and on jerseys.

The difference with betting and the lottery is all around the dangers of addiction. It's much easier to get addicted to gambling and not know where to draw the line. It's much harder to get addicted to something like the lottery. You're not risking so much because the costs are so much lower. There's a strong link with addiction and the thrill of risk-taking that's worth exploring.

Tom, on the issue of the lottery vs sports betting punishments for players-it seems to me that your issue isn’t with sports betting in general. The issue is the moral discrepancy of inundating players with the idea of sports betting being a part of the game, down to the sponsors on their shirt, then punishing them harshly for any involvement in it. At the same time, sports betting companies are profiting from the relationship and monetizing the players. It seems an unfair temptation and I agree with your opinion that it is different from the lottery or prize drawings. I think an analogous example would be a U-18s team being sponsored by Heineken and then punishing the kids harshly if they were caught underage drinking.

Betting and raffles are very similar but different. I’ve never placed a bet in my life, never played a fruit machine but I have played online poker on and off over the years but never put a lot of money into it, like £5-£10 over many month’s. I think there is a huge problem with betting advertisement as it’s absolutely everywhere and and at all times of the day.
@vandemann4 ай бұрын
Even a participating in a church or school raffle is a gamble. If there was an advertisement for your local fete and there was a raffle, and you were excited by that and attended on that basis then that then the ad has done its job. Football prizes and the lottery are doing a job. It’s hard to stream line adverts for just adults and not children or people who are addicted .its all about taking things in moderation. Maybe a thought that if people are ploughing lots of money every day in to football prizes, then some advice would be to stop take a break. It got me thinking Tom on a Saturday morning thanks . Great show as always. Respect!

I see Football Prizes and the lottery different to betting also. I guess they can both be categorized as 'gambling'. Although lottery and football prizes is luck of the draw, you know the odds, and you're more likely to part with smaller sums that you're okay to lose. Betting on the other hand is trying to play the odds in your favour and there's a multitude of options, not just a luck of the draw thing. They're in the same boat, but I can't help but feel they're definitely different

betting has much expectation than prizes. you are rewarded based on what bet you place but prizes give a random selection of winners so there is no much expectation. I think betting companies should sponsor but players should not be allowed to bet because they can manipulate the odds to their favor.

This is definitely fair, as players can bet on non-football things. Personally, I’d rather see the major sponsorships and ads (kit, advertising boards, and the like) not accessible to betting companies. It’s almost absurd, actually, the situation; and I think Tom laid it out pretty plainly.

Players/staff can have direct influence in games and are compensated well for their professional involvement in the game. I’m wondering legally if it’s in their contracts if betting is prohibited. If so then it’s simple. As for lottery vs betting, it’s a choice and to generalize what is right for masses is impossible. The only criticism I have about football prizes it’s UK only, love the show and as a foreign listener it does suck that I can’t participate in that. I am for sure not saying that you are xenophobic, you are the opposite, but that would be my only critique of football prizes. Listened on catch up and came to comment re. Gambling issue. I'm very anti-betting, but do think there is a difference with a raffle/lottery if there is a limited number of tickets (and therefore money to lose) with a defined prize. With betting, your losses are unlimited, and your return more opaque. I think both could be problematic to somebody with addiction, but if you have an addiction you'll be drawn towards the more dangerous option. Should we ban tombolas at school fetes?
@BetaFax4 ай бұрын
I think there’s this thing with all types of vice. I’m ok with this level , but not ok with something I think is a few rungs up the ladder. A bit of wine might be fine, but maybe someone passes on the scotch whisky. A bit of prize play might be fine, but maybe someone passes on the sports betting. That framework might help a bit. All or nothing, non nuanced, takes almost always abandon the in-between reality of everyday life. So, it is possible to support a ‘ban’ on the betting companies (shirts, adverts, etc) simply because of the consequences the players might face (for betting on their sport). It’s ok to then turn around and maybe use those services. Or turn around and do a prizes competition. Or turn around and do a lottery game. It’s an interesting conversation.
@markygti1384 ай бұрын
I don’t have an issue with betting, the lottery or raffles like football prizes. They are however all a form of gambling. That’s why you have to be 18 to participate. As far as betting sponsors, I don’t have an issue with this either. Footballers can gamble just like any of us except on football. It’s exactly the same as employees of a competition company being ineligible to enter. Lastly the Paqueta charges aren’t related to him having any sort of addiction. There’s no suggestion he’s made any bets himself. He’s been charged with spot fixing which imo is even worse and should absolutely carry a heavy punishment.

I think that players can be addicted to gambling or just enjoying it as a hobby. There is so many sports they could bet on, so when it’s football it creates the possibility for cheating.

My take on the gambling subject. Firstly footbal prizes you have to be 18+ to be involved. In real life football, children are being exposed to betting and gambling from an early age and are being conditioned to believe that football and gambling/betting goes hand in hand. Football prizes is a raffle. The lottery is something that is there that people can do once a week but it isnt synonomous with anything. Football is becoming synonomous with betting, and football has such a huge young following that I think you can very comfortably be ok with the lottery and football prizes, vs betting in football more generally.

Football players are not banned from gambling in general but they are banned from betting in the sport they are participating in due to the massive conflicts in interest. Lotto and betting are no different but one has been socially normalized and one sufferers from bad PR. The conflict you are having is a conflict in accepted social narratives, despite the similar reality of lotto and betting.

The insane level of gambling advertising during sport, and punditry of sport, has an overwhelming exposure to children which raffles/lotteries do not. The association between betting on sport and enjoying sport is a gateway that needs to be removed. I imagine players with gambling addictions would come from their outside environments and not directly related to advertising in football although I can see where it can create temptation for addicts. The culture of betting in sport and its effects on children is the bigger issue for me and would prefer sport in general was rid of it.

I completely agree that racism is any form is terrible and leads to huge issues. That said there’s a reason that people from all over the world choose to come here. If you’ve been watching the recent protests in London you’ll see that a large majority of the people being Anti-Semitic are not native born British.. in my life I’ve met very few ‘racists’, which is a blessing, but I do agree they are out there and they need to be both educated and listened to. Lots of people hold views because they do not have all the pieces of the puzzle, but without listening to their concerns you can’t understand and guide them. Of course, I don’t mean the people shouting obscenities in the street. There’s a softer prejudice that can be taught out of people, given time and patience. This is going way too far for a chat on a football podcast haha! See you at 8am tomorrow!
