A video posted in 2009, but done very well! I wish this kendo group would do more videos because they did such a great job.

I did kendo for 6 years and the scarriest thing about it was the throat hits, it is rare but extremely jarring to get jabbed like that in the throat.

By yelling, you are basically showing your strong spirit (which is one of the most important things in kendo) as there is practically no other way to judge it.

Do they have a collage that teaches kendo in north florida? I'm trying to get a state scholarship, and I would like to go to a collage that has a martial arts program.

thanks for the advice, but I live in a small town so it might be a bit harder to find a good sensei. But thanks again!

Its just like Zen u discover yourself, your weakness, u have to fight with a Strong Spirit, relax your Shoulders, Open your Chest, & Throw your body & if u see a open space go for it & Strike a Point ! because in Kendo u have to use your mind, & the more u dont hit the other person, the more he will hit u, & the more u get hurt ! Act Fast in a fight, but have open mind & follow the rules too ! everyone one has the fear to get stabbed in the Throat, but u have to have Faith that it wont happen !

If the sound is up in your throat, you're likely to get hoarse. It's supposed to be an "unvoiced" sound that engages your vocal cords as little as possible while still being big and loud. (The sound that's worked best for me is "saaaaah".)

@soyellowsoviolent well u have to think Japanese Culture is a Cross between Chinese & Korean since the only people that lived on the islands before the Asian appeared around 3rd Century AD(around that time there were still useing Shields), were the Indigenous Ainu People ! the Ainu are the First & true Native people to Japan so the first kinda Japanese warrior would be from them ! the asian japanese got there combat from mainland influences the Samurai like warrior was invited around 1200AD !

I don't think kendo was invented by samurai who wanted to kill each other... Japanese martial arts incorporate a lot of ideas of meditation and reflection about oneself rooted in Shintoism and Buddhism. Also her explaining the concept of inner spirit or otherwise known as Ki or Gi is not yelling... it's hard to explain in words it must be actually experienced while practicing kendo BUT it is not yelling that's is for sure.
@kaym6668 жыл бұрын
Well Its expressed by yelling. Its showing that you have the guts and determination to keep going. I dont think there is anything magical about it though. Its psychological.

Kendo was originally Samurai practice, they made practice armor and bamboo swords for the sake of training in combat without injury. However, Kendo and other Japanese martial arts were banned during the Allies' occupation, and it was only after heavily reforming them into this modern sports form, that it was brought back. Think of it like today's Olympic archery or fencing, they may not have the same battlefield purposes as in previous eras, but that doesn't change their origins.

Kendo came about near the end of the samurai era during the edo period. At that time, the samurai didn't have any external enemies to fight and they were mostly just a burden on the civil service anyway, just sucking money from the economy doing overpaid noble stuff. They needed to do something to justify why they could carry swords around when 90% of the population weren't so they invented kendo by incorporating elements from the old kenjutsu schools but in a safer manner.

you have to "yell" to earn a point? if thats how it works then its stupid, is there a way around that?
