Dr Zaheer and Rabbi Weissman share opinions, thoughts and ideas about the art and etiquette of appropriate discussion/speech. Dr Zaheer tells us about his understanding of the Islamic perspective on this topic based on some verses of the Quran emphasising gentle speech, patience, repaying evil with good, always looking for the good in others, and speaking in a way that is with wisdom and just/fair. He discusses the dangers of judging others and the dangers of trying to win an argument instead of having a truth-seeking approach. He mentions the dangers of blind faith and choosing tradition over truth just because it feels more comforting. He reminds us of the story in the Quran where Moses (Pbuh) is asked to speak even to Pharoah ( who was causing corruption and oppression in the land) with gentle speech- so that perhaps he may heed the message. We discussed the common spark within humanity- the place of meeting and that inner call to righteousness that unites us all as well as the beautiful ways of expressing our inner truth and sharing it with others using our diverse languages, colours, talents, blessings, gifts and talents.
