I took an art class last semester, and a lot of people in the class were clearly beginners. Watching their growth was amazing. I don't understand how people can look at someone's attempt at creating and feel anything but excited to see them grow and improve.

I also took 3 art classes last semester and honestly, you couldn't have said it better. 2 of the 3 classes were intro-level and anyone could take them, so seeing non-art majors evolve and change was probably my favorite part of each class. Some of the newbies had previously decided to become art majors without any experience because they wanted to learn how to create, and man, their progress was SO heartwarming. A few classmates in particular grew so exponentially, I could just tell they'd be going places someday. Part of my art journey was ironically realizing I didn't want to make art my job. Ever since I changed my major, I've actually been drawing and changing MORE than I had in the last several years alone; and I've been doing this for well over a decade! Point is, everyone has their own journey, their own learning pace, and their own choices. I think that's beautiful. It's sad that social media is forcibly eradicating free thinking (not to sound like Ben Shapiro lmfao). Imagine how much good TikTok could do if they just thought critically for a few seconds and cheered people on.

I remember being on deviant art in the late 00s, and it was so common seeing empty accounts roasting young artists in the fan art community. Especially on fan artists original work. A lot of the problem was people were expecting character hyper realism in what was clearly a study on background perspective. It really only affected fan artists who tried drawing people. Would have loved to have seen more arguments about the anatomy of Bowser or Pokémon on there, but alas, they were just as creative in their arguments as they were in what they posted in the accounts they bullied from.

Something I always hated since I'm in the art community in 2006, is unsolicited "criticism". It did more harm to my process than helped me and held me back for YEARS because the bullying sucked out my confidence in drawing and learning. I quit the art community for the past 4-5 years to concentrate on myself and started from scratch with my art. I'm 35 now and since I'm posting very rarely my art, but still draw a lot (just stoped posting it), I had a HUUUUGE upgrade in. my art, which gave me enough confidence to not give a fuck anymore. It was the best decision, if I hadn't quit, I would have quit art for good.

I still remember joining a (at the time) new art platform when i was in middle school and almost immediately had people accusing me of things like "style theft," "pose theft," and tracing simply for using reference photos and experimenting with my style. I haven't quit posting on social media, but for me, its become a thing I do when it crosses my mind, then I just step away. I don't worry about trends, peak posting hours, etc. I'll just post a pencil sketch at 2am with minimal tags and no caption and disappear for weeks. The more I've distanced myself from what social media wants, the more connected ive felt to my work.

And my years of lurking around as a voyeur in these spaces has only served to prove I made the right decision. I'm honestly convinced the entire online art ""community"" is useless, and as you said OP, only stifles any progress to be made. Not at all the modern Bohemian, beatpoet art colony I envisioned lol

This is why I stick to the KZbin Art Community. Especially on shorts, I very rarely see people crapping on or roasting beginner artists. Of course there’s outliers, but most of the time it’s just so dang supportive. It always makes me feel good when I come across a short by a beginner artist with maybe 15 likes and 5 comments, all those comments being so positive
@skippykay599
@skippykay599 10 ай бұрын
Same! Even beyond KZbin shorts, I personally have made animatics that only had a small amount of views, but I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a negative comment, even though I know they’re not that good lol. Even when I’ve found art I didn’t personally like on shorts, comments were still largely positive!
@nomoretwitterhandles

It's so ironic how Art KZbin is the ONLY saving grace for KZbin Shorts. Most of Art KZbin can be pretty toxic as well; I remember years ago there was a huge artist in the community who, one day, randomly made an entire video saying "art block isn't real" and "you're just being lazy" and they lost a ton of viewership and respect after that. As an artist with MDD and some undiagnosed attention disorder (we're figuring that out, medical world moves slow haha), I remember being hurt by their remarks. Not even offended, just plain hurt. I supported them for a while even though I didn't particularly like their art style, because I had faith in their advice. Then they turned around and said "but you're lazy and you should just draw, you lazy bum". Safe to say they had to make an apology after that. Not that it matters; I'm not ever going to follow an artist who has no empathy or awareness. As for KZbin Shorts, they don't allow enough time for crappy people to "deep dive" into why all artists are secretly lazy or some bs like that. Most people will upload a few tips or a speedpaint, and there you go. It's great.

I think another reason why people bully other artists is because they're jealous of the attention. I remember when i used to use DeviantArt i saw art that i saw as less good get wayy more views and used to be super jealous, but now looking back i realize we were at the exact same skill level, i just wasnt on the platform as long. Luckily i never resorted to bullying.

I know exactly this feeling. I had an IRL friend on deviantart when I was 12 and I used to obsessively watch her pages views and seethe in the way immature middle school kids do. She was also on the platform longer than I was. It really was that simple. I think sometimes if art was generally a less competitive hobby maybe we wouldn't have this behavior become so rampant. I'm a firm believer some of these kids never grow up and just become immature seething adults...

@@NassifehI think it's more so because kids think cringe culture is cool - cringe culture quite literally promotes bullying and policing yourself and others. And there are adults or older kids bullying younger kids and this not only makes kids feel less safe and comfortable just simply being kids, but it also puts into kids minds that it's cool to bully. So long as it's not called bullying, bullying is okay ig :/

I feel like it's also a case of people thinking that they can't dislike something without a "correct" reason. You can dislike a style and you can complain about seeing it to your friends. You don't need to proclaim how morally reprehensible the style or artist is if they're really not. Art is subjective and your reason to not like something can be "I just don't like how it looks". This may tie into the fact that publically complaining , whether intended to become public or not, instantly gets backlash as well if there's "no reason" to dislike something. Thus, it feels like a requirement to prepare some hard justification to earn the right to complain, which is then interpreted as a call to arms. In short, people need to accept others can enjoy or not enjoy harmless things for harmless reasons without dragging a hundred strangers into it.

I think people really need to understand that there is a time and a place for criticism. At uni, I agreed to read and give feedback on a creative writing dissertation. I spent a lot of time and effort doing it, and from the moment I gave it back, she stopped using my name, and started calling me ‘pernickety’ instead, in a mostly joking manner, but I have to admit, there were a LOT of corrections and suggestions for improvement. The important thing here was that she had ASKED for my opinion, and along with the criticisms I made sure to let her know the things that worked well, because it was a brilliant piece of work, and I didn’t want her to feel discouraged. I must have done an okay job, because despite my new nickname, she asked me to look over her final draft too. I hope my suggestions helped her. There is a huge difference between the criticism I provided in the example above, and offering unsolicited discouraging feedback to total strangers. When a stranger posts their writing online, and I think there is room for improvement, I scroll past it saying nothing. Only if someone has specifically asked for critique is it appropriate to provide it. If someone isn’t prepared or interested in your feedback, you will only do harm, even if the intention is good.

This. As an artist who has just recently graduated with a BA in art studio, I can comment on how critiques are in Uni. If any of these people that bully other artists want to go to uni for art, they’re in for a rude awakening that bullying is not allowed in professional settings and is highly unprofessional. It’s one thing to not like an art work, but if your critique is not really about the work itself but an attack on the artist, that’s not going to fly. The professors would rather you explain why something does or doesn’t work in a piece and how that person could improve.

I agree. Another reason why I don’t like this internet culture of giving unsolicited advice is that the trolls giving them act like they have a right to do so because “you posted it on a public platform therefore I can comment on it however I want” or give a holier-than-thou attitude.

Hey! Did not expect to see my own face here 😭 but I completely agree. I feel as though this situation has gotten worse as of a few months ago and it’s really discouraging to see so much hate on TikTok now. I would say now the biggest issue with the TikTok art community is this new “artstyle trend” where we are now grouping peoples works into styles. It completely strips away any individuality from the artist but if anyone decides to hate on that art-style (like jelly or cream soda style) everyone under that category instantly gets ridiculed and ran off the website. It honestly makes me not want to post at all. But thanks for using your platform and bringing this to light!

I really do not understand how you can actively hate on beginner artists in their video's comment sections. Any beginner artist sharing their art is so brave for doing so. And they should not be randomly insulted or laughed at for not being born a professional artist. Everyone was at a point where their art just wasn't developed as much. So every artist should be able to relate to beginner artists. Motivate them, tell them they are doing a great job. You don't need to lie and say "that anatomy is perfect", but just say something nice if you really want to comment. Their art may not be a master piece in your eyes, but everyone starts somewhere.

Its also really sad when it comes to specific fandoms, especially if you are genuinely a good person who just happened to like drawing a specific thing (example being Genshin Impact), but the rest of a fandom ruins it for you, or ruin's their fandom's reputation so much, that you are lumped in with them by default

I learned pretty quickly to help others improve rather than criticize. When I took my college course for drawing, a lot of people there were beginners and seeing them improve and grow throughout the semester was incredible. They were always willing to accept feedback from those who have been drawing for far longer. It's baffling seeing this kinda shit happen when I'm so used to seeing such a positive community. At least where I lived and went to school.

When I was younger, my brother would just tell me everything that is wrong with my art when I wanted to show my parents. I then stopped showing people my art unless it was at school and became super self conscious of my work. It wasn't until recently where people online were telling me they enjoy my style that I started becoming a bit more confident in my work. People just being unnecessarily rude towards usually children will just make these people not want to do art.

I'm not really on art tiktok but from what ive seen of it people are soooo quick to attack things that are either 'cringe' OR something overly mainstream. i think the way we heavily curate social media with our best content first has definitely given people ridiculously high standards, unlike how it was in the 2000s where you could post your shitty mspaint oc on deviantart in relative peace lmao

I’ve started sharing basically everything I draw in the art channels in Discord servers I’m in, even the shitty half-assed doodles and failed sketches. My mentality is that the fun of creating and sharing is much more valuable than the likes and praise I could get from doing so. That said, it does feel nice to have someone say something positive. I’d much rather have no reaction than a bad one, though.

The disproportionate and 'ugly' style of that one person actually isn't that bad and it breaks my heart that people were so horrible to them. ESPECIALLY because the guy who did Rugrats, As Told By Ginger and a lot of other shows, had a very similar style and those were very big, very beloved franchises that were loved BECAUSE they were unique and expressive. I hope that person is happy with their current art style, but they should in no way be embarrassed by their old one. It wasn't ugly, it was just different and I wonder how it would have evolved if they were just left alone

Their """art style""" looks nothing like those shows. Let's not get delusional and say the flaws in their art are just their art style. Its wrong for them to be bullied but that doesn't mean we have to lie. It's obvious that they are a beginner still learning the fundamentals and that's fine.
@impposter560

@@commentbot9510 Not exactly like it, no. But the unusual style of it, the way things are exaggerated, moved around or stretched out IS similar (especially to As Told By Ginger). Something doesn't have to be a carbon copy to make you go 'hmm, that reminds of this other thing'. Which it did (and why would I bother to lie about that???). I believe it wasn't all inexperience with anatomy that made it look that way, I think there was some stylistic choice too. When I was a kid, I tried out all kinds of styles before bothering to learn the fundamentals, because I was self taught and that was boring. But just because I didn't know what I was doing doesn't mean I had no style, or that I didn't draw with intention

I remember some bullying going on online back in the early days of the art Internet community, but honestly most of it was irl, like if your art got around to your high school, not inside the actual communities of artists, you know? Like I don't remember kids getting bullied on DVA for drawing neon sparkle dogs, using bases, etc.. I'm sure it did happen (and I certainly do remember some silly gatekeeping/judging going on) but overall the sites or groups in them were safe places for kids/teens to express themselves. And yeah, honestly the use of ' cringe ' has become just another way to bully... it's a word you use for something you look down on, or that makes you uncomfortable, but you otherwise have no reason to hate, and causes no harm to anybody. I feel for any of the weird kids growing up with this kind of environment... It seems like there aren't a lot of art spaces online that haven't changed for the worst (or imploded/died) in that regard.

Many times before I've been pushed into a self hating and depressed hole because I joined a "beginner artist" community to find out it was toxic because someone didn't draw in the way they wanted or that I was the odd one out bc everyone there was talented artists that just didn't have a following and were very rude It's the same with closed character species where they'll have a guest artist sign up time but it always the same styles or artists that get picked bc it gives the group more attention instead of letting younger or not fully proud of their art people try it out and see if they like it because in the end you can always delete or trade off a character if you don't like it Also side note I hate people criticizing people for using programs like ibis paint, not everyone has access to a decent laptop or tablet and not every kid has $50 to spend on clip studio or procreate

And if a child posts one of their artworks, it’s obvious that they would have been pretty proud of it, otherwise.. why would they have posted it? I think that featured clip at 4:18 perfectly sums up why this new "ArtLore" BS is... well, BS. "But artlore isn't about bullying new artists, it's about calling out terrible human beings in the art community it's just an add on that their art is bad." Ironically, that quote comes from a TikTokker using a blatantly awful style and chicken scratch. They're also dismissing the inherent bigotry of artlore itself (any human is capable of change, I firmly believe this). Most artists with "bad" art are, indeed, beginners. Most art beginners are literal children who may not know any better than being "terrible human beings" (and what an awful title to force upon CHILDREN). They may have had one point though: Maybe artlore "isn't about bullying new artists"--it's about harassing minors and spreading misinformation and bigotry.

Personally I don't have any social media platforms to show my art because I really can't stand the idea of people becoming so entitled over what I draw and how u draw it, the thought really irritates me so I don't post. The only thing that made me want to showcase my art was because I wanted to do commission work so I'm considering making a document of all the work I have so far to share to people who contact me. I still want a low profile, but I know people who can put me in contact with people who want work done. The art community has made my already negative perception of the Internet worse.

I'm not sure why TikTok even still exists 💀

i used to love drawing when i was a teenager until my life turned into hell which eventually made me lose my passion. now in my early 30's not only do i have to fight myself to get my passion back, i also have to deal with this bs. good thing i hate people way too much (save some exceptions, of course) to have the energy to post what i do online. i'd recommend young artists to either do the same thing or post your stuff on really niche communities.

Say it with me, everybody! Critique is not always necessary and can be harmful if done incorrectly or in the wrong setting! Just because it's public doesn't mean you need to make a public comment on it!

This shit right here is why i don't have tiktok even though it's not just on tiktok but most of it is 5:53 yeah people online don't know how to do that anymore it's like they HAVE to- no they NEED to say something like no you don't if you don't like someone's art just mute/block them you will never see their art again but apparently that's to much to ask

Once I thought about sharing my art on tiktok but after hearing all the things that go on in there remind me of the clique of kids and sometimes adult groups from our deviantArt meetings back in like 2008 would treat us like we were garbage for not knowing anatomy. It created a shame when sharing art with one another and that builds and creates a lot of trauma in relation to art. Multiplying it by a thousand on a platform where people dogpile on you has to be so much worse cause at least I remember the faces of the people who would do that and avoided them in my day to day. There's a lot of actual research and digging that has to be done in terms of what censorship by bullying is bringing to the table in the last year or so tho (a much bigger conversation). With social media we opened a macro cosmos of people dogpiling on each other cause a lot have forgotten that ignoring and moving on when it's not hurting anybody is an option.

Huh, I remember trying to improve for a while and then I just gave up and now I do not take art nearly as seriously anymore. So I cannot - Draw certain poses - Draw certain backgrounds - Draw certain places - Draw many objects (ranging from pencil to car to everything else) - Draw any facial expressions besides neutral or smiling - Draw what I see when it comes to faces - Shade - Highlight - Handle lighting in any way - Draw most poses - Draw certain body parts - Draw any complex angles (from behind is already difficult for me) - Draw any animals - Draw some clothes - Draw how clothing interacts with anything (including folds) - Handle colours in a pleasant way I am these people’s worst nightmare. As I have been a hobby artist for 15 years now. But no matter how much criticism I receive in real life (never online, I avoid social media like the plague), I cannot bring myself to care. I feel, the moment I will start drawing other things than the usual, it will ruin art for me. I am already pleased with my limited abilities currently. ☺️♥️
