A fascinating insight into Shepard's life, I enjoyed it immensely. The Wind in the Willows has always been one of my favourite books and made all the better by Shepard's illustrations. Even at 58 years old, I still read it from time to time.

This is a breathe of fresh air! As far as I'm concerned, Disney replaced Shepard's artistry with commodities. The original drawings were magical and encouraged an imaginative response on the part of the reader. The Disney images present us with a fait accompli--you get what you see and nothing more. Disney's artists gave us some splendid work in other stories, but no one could possibly outshine Ernest Shepard, especially not in the Pooh series. And thankyou again for these wonderful videos!

Thank you. I discovered your channel last night and I'm enjoying your videos so much. Shepard is one of my favorites. His illustrations for Pooh and The Wind in the Willows (and the stories themselves) remain as magical to me as an adult as they were to me as a child. Stories and illustrations like these are the reason that so many people all over the world feel like England is the home of their childhood. I don't even acknowledge the Disney abomination... that never was and never will be Pooh.

The childhood depicted in the Winnie the Pooh stories is some considerable distance from my own urban working class origins, and yet I find it the greatest evocation of childhood I can think of. The picture of Pooh and Piglet on the bridge remains my favourite pen and ink illustration.

Ernest Howard Shepard's beguiling and timeless illustrations have never been forgotten, and they never will be forgotten because they are the genuine illustrations, and the are of the genuine Winnie-the-Pooh characters, everywunn should know that, even those bungling idiots at Disney studios, everyone in Great Britain must remember that Winnie the Pooh is a beloved English character, and he is 100% British, and the concoction of a wonderful man, too in fact, E H Shepard and A A Milne.

Except that the real Winnie the Pooh was Canadian, came from Canada and was named "Winnipeg' (Winnie). Yes....I'm Canadian too. We had books sent us from England with Shepard's Pooh and that is what I grew up with. I found Disney's illustrations crude but also understood they needed to 'cheap-out' so they could do full length features with them.

Thank you! I first saw Shepard's illustrations at the age of three when our father read Peter Plyds (the highly successful Danish translation of Winnie the Pooh) to us. Nowadays my (English) grandchildren are likewise growing up with Shepard - no Disney abominations allowed!

I too am a fan of Mr. Shepard's works and to keep my aging mind active, take pen to paper and try to copy his lovely renditions of Pooh & friends. There's no likelihood of my ever emulating his wonderful talent, but I find it an immensely enjoyable pastime. I am under the impression that Heritage Press printed a special addition of “Wind in the Willows” and ask Shepard to illustrate it. He passed without completing some of his illustrated pages. I have notice that some of the drawings appear to be incomplete. The Introduction of Shepard’s “Heritage Press “Wind in the Willows” (a large format) states Theodore Roosevelt’s love of the book... the intro is an Excellent Read. Shepard’s of “Winnie the Pooh” will always be dear to me... ❤️💛❤️💛❤️💛❤️💛❤️💛...

I had the great pleasure of seeing some of Shepard's original works in an exhibition at Mottisfont Abbey in Hampshire a couple of years ago. And I can recommend the two volumes of his autobiography: delightful reading. And Shepard and Milne -- both pacifists -- did their basic officer training at Golden Hill Fort on the Isle of Wight. It's now exclusive apartments, but still stands.

A thoroughly enjoyable and as ever, informative tribute Pete. I was never really aware of the Disney version of the Milne, having done regular dramatised readings for my then young daughter every evening (never forgotten it seems) - all the books complete with Shephard images! When very young myself we had first editions. Sadly they 'disappeared' as children's books tend to but the illustrations always remain in memory as a vital part of the indelible stories. The 'Pooh' and 'Willows' were the only aspect of Shephard's work of which I was aware, so this video is additionally fascinating. I shall send a link to my daughter!

While the Disney version may be more heavily marketed, the Shephard artwork is in the public domain and is freely sharable. I see them all the time on Facebook.

Yes I didn't phrase that as well as I should have. What I meant is that although they couldn't kill off the originals, during their ownership of the rights nobody other than Disney could create new material. That will end in 2026. So somebody might actually make a faithful animated version.

O my word ....Winnie the Pooh by Shepard.....the best illustrations ever. I live in the Netherlands and my uncle and aunt had the book in their library in english. At age 5 i discovered this book and i couldn't even read dutch....let alone english. But i so enjoyed the pictures and knew exactly where the book was and when i was at my aunt and uncles house i always want to look at the wonderful illustrations. I was in an other world. Later in life i read Winnie the Pooh and the Wind in the willows to my children. I am 70 now and will read the books to my grandchildren. Disney... ......made the most terrible disgusting caricatures. A bloody shame. To me these Disney caricatures are significant for the degeneration and the loss of real craftsmanship ( love and attention and dedication and subtlety ) everywhere on this planet......... It mainly is downfall commerce nowadays.

A very pleasant documentary, I've always loved Sheppard through Pooh and Willows - mine are the uncolored drawings so that's what I'm used to, but from what I've seen the water colored afterwards effect seem lovely also. A bit sad he and Milne weren't friends, I quite liked their relationship portrayed in Goodbye Christopher Robin where they bonded over their war experience long before the books were inspired - oh well, truth will out, in general that movie seemed pretty accurate. Hope you do more of these in-depth looks at a particular artist, along with you're regulars.

Hello again, and given some of the things I got involved in to make a living in illustration were far more shameful than that. My dislike of the evil empire is mostly to do with their assumption that the world is just a colony of the USA. The actual work - or the 2D at least can be quite astonishingly lovely. I had to check you out and I see you have been involved with some stellar projects, and I really like the gestural look of your animated stuff. When I left college in 1973 I first worked at what wasn't yet Cosgrove Hall in Manchester. Not an animator but backgrounds and character work mostly. Downhill all the way ever since!

I love Winnie-the-Pooh Shepard’s illustrations are fantastic it is kind of sad that there are people out there who think that Winnie-the-Pooh is a Disney creation but luckily there are people like me who know the truth I know about A. A. Milne and his son Christopher Robin Milne who not only was the inspiration for the character Christopher Robin but his toys were the inspiration for most of the characters in the books for example he had a toy donkey which was the inspiration for Eeyore

I learned something about myself when Disney published its own artistic version of the Pooh world. Although I had always been fond of the magical vision of Disney, I found myself hating the corporation for debasing Sherard's gentle whimsy and "Disneyfying" everything. That seemed--and still seems--unforgivable.

Yes it's the 'Disneyfying' that sticks in the gullet. I've always beena great admirer of their background art, but it's the riding roughshod over original material that gets my blood pressure up. Alice in Wonderland is yet another example. Grrrr....

I suppose that as a baby boomer it is not surprising that I was unaware that Shepard had a long association with Punch...even tho I would have first become aware of that magazine at about age 6. My dad was a fan and it would show up in odd places about our various houses, but by that time no more Shepard in its pages. a like and a comment for the algo god

As for the others they have featured (briefly) in my video about children's illustration (although not Steig but he's about to be in another video) it's possible but they have to go to the back of a rather long queue of others waiting to be featured. Surely Disney still lets the original books be published with Sheppard's Illustrations? Leastwise that's all I ever see - unless it's one of those simplified retellings based on their films. If they did, that'd be a disturbing extreme - maybe it already is but I don't care about the extra merchandise much - but then again I don't know why Walt felt the need to buy *all* rights of Bambi away from Felix Salten when he was poor and in Exile, you'd think movie/merch rights would be enough, not total IP - as if there's not enough room for book Bambi and Disney as they bare small relation (Pooh's a lot more faithful by comparison - not regarding the many more adventures). I suppose it's a good thing Disney normally adapts license free stories when their author is long dead.

Yes it's true that Disney couldn't destroy the memory of the originals - but they've had a pretty good try at it. Whenever I see Disney merchandise it sends my blood pressure way up - my love of Shepard tends to make me unreasonably biased.

Great Video about this Singular Universally Renowned Illustrator. What blew my mind most about him: HE LIVED THRU PART OF THE DISNEY WTP ERA AND DIED IN 1976! I was aged 10 and 11 years, respectively, during 1979. The centenary of EHS's birth was celebrated, I just know. Unfortunately, I never knew of it. Hello and many thanks for your appreciation of this particular video. Despite my lifelong admiration for Shepard's work I have no memory of even knowing the year of his centenary (shame on me). But I remember seeing the first Disney animation and much as I loved the backround art I left the cinema with a serious case of Disneyphobia. And despite being too self-absorbed at the time - trying to keep my own career on the rails - I had a print of the pooh sticks bridge illustration (the view from behind) and it's still on the wall. My most loved image of all time.

As a practical matter when they are printing a book with that illustration in it how was the color applied to the page? I understand a little about stone lithography. From some of your videos it is my understanding the illustrators directly created art onto stones. For others are there master pieces of art out there in the world that publishers then somehow copied off of?

Hello again and thanks for the clarification. I'll attempt a ludicrously superficial synopsis but you would do far better to google it and then spend days digesting the inormation. Seriously, it's that complex. But for now the key element with reference to the subject is the invention of what's called full colour offset lithography, which came into being towards the end of the 19th century. Before that other methods such as stone lithography, woodblock, chromolithography and zincottpe had been used with limited success. But it was offset lithography which enabled the illustrator to draw and paint their picture in any medium from cut out paper to representational oil painting and be able to have that image reproduced with only minimal loss of quality. And equally important, unlike stone lithography, the original image could also be sold. In this process the image is scanned and each of the four print colours, yellow, magenta, cyan and black seperated out from the image. These then form the plates from which the image is reproduced. That's about all I can offer here but I know there are many videos on youtube detailing print processes past and prestent which you might find useful. Happy hunting!

Sorry to bring it up but I wanted to check you are aware that this pronunciation is wrong. It couldn't stand in light of other comments about the americanisation of Pooh, Alice in Wonderland, etc. Not to mention the despoiling of all Roald Dahl's stories, the list goes on. Hello and thanks for the question. Unforyunately I can be only a little help in providing an answer. All the music used in this video comes from KZbin's copyright-free archive, which any youtuber can access. The problem is that once I download the tracks I change the file name so I can't tell you their actual titles. But they are all freely available and you can search by the type of music and its mood so they could be located without too much trouble.

While Disney's current stranglehold over Winnie the Pooh is indeed horrible, I disagree with the opinion that the original cartoons were a TOTAL disservice to the books and illustrations. I very much enjoyed the Disney adaptations as a child and later the book versions when I was younger. I do understand your take on it, however - especially since Pooh is originally a British character who's now much more commonly associated with an American company. That's not even mentioning the fact that Shepard's original illustrations are rarely discussed when Pooh is brought up. The only references to them in Disney I can think of would be the stuffed toys shown in live action shots and the storybook drawings. Perhaps I'm just biased as Disney's rendition led to a version of Pooh being put inside the Kingdom Hearts series and interacting with the games' main protagonist. As silly as it sounds, essentially being able to play as a version of Christopher Robin inside an rpg I already enjoyed did rejuvenate some childlike wonder inside me. Anyway, thank you very much for the information on Mr. Shepard. I plan on studying his artwork in the near future and this helped me better understand him.

Thanks a lot for your comment, appreciation and observations. If memory serves I think I did mention that the original background art was fairly convincing. But it was the need to create a clean line and fill with cel painting on the characters that made it an impossibility to replicate Sherpard's style. The animated Fritz the Cat suffered a similar fate.

Yes, it is awful the Disney shit has suppressed the beautiful beautiful original figures drawn by Ernest Shepard. I really hate it. I think Milne's wife did sell the rights and their son Christopher Robin did not agree on that .

Wonderful.Thank you again. Disney also ruined 101 Dalmations, the drawings of Cruella Deville by Anne and Janet Johnstone were so sophisticated. I believe the sketchy nature of the cartoon version was influenced by Ronald Searle when he was working in films.
