I don't think I've seen such a masterful use of positive and negative space in illustration. The images are striking and leave a visual impression, while communicating warmth and humor. Less is More!

@@blank557 Another viewer made a similar observation, and I honestly don't know the answer. Its possible of course, and I'm pretty sure that Nerman's image predates the kelloggs box. But it could just be coincidental, and I would be surprised if whoever designed it (presumably American) would have even heard of Nerman. The jury is well and truly out on this one.

Wonderfully vibrant, playful, inviting, and often comedic, Nerman's work has an undeniable charm to it. His caricatures, stylized design work, and simple lines, demand your attention. @@petebeard No, I'm the other kind of bowmaker: for bowed instruments. Mostly historical bows of all kinds, but lately predominantly baroque and classical bows for contrabass. I know, it's a ridiculously tiny niche, but there are so few doing it, that it is enough to get by on.

OK, Pete, since you already made a quite unnecessary apology I can correct a couple things. The title of the book at 8.20 is Guldslottet (The Gold Castle), not Guldmottet. Beautiful and delightful, indeed! Interestingly, enough, this former retired NYC fashion illustrator never heard of this illustrator and many others on your wonderful channel! I've heard of and know about the late Aubrey Beardsly, Swedish illustrator Carl Larrson and Erte, but not some others! Thankfully, we learn something new everyday! BTW, an illustrator is an artist as is a painter of many different styles. An illustrator is a commercial artist, a painter is a fine artist. A fine line between the two though as many famous fine artists have had their work commercialized, even after death! 🎨🖌😍♥

Hello and yes it was for the Swedish screening of that masterpiece.
Wanted to help you with the swedish: "Kalles Skansen-besök" means "Carls visit to Skansen". A 'Skans' is literally a fort but int his case it refers to a place in Stockholm that used to be a fort but since th early 1900 has been a zoo and museum. Also, "Guldslottet" means "the golden castle".

A hundred years ago, really wasn't that long ago. I love the big red and black tiger with the long black and red tail. The way he used shapes together in such a way that they not only formed the front legs and tail, it gave them 3 dimensional qualities also. He mastered the use of negative space. Today's computers can easily recreate this, but all the work that went into creating the original is becoming a lost art.

I never realised that RedHead Matches by Bryant and May company used a logo by a competition winner Rupert Hing who obviously borrowed heavily from Nerman. I have seen that logo in boxes of matches all my life in Australia and irs hugely famous here in Australia so have a look at that picture Pete. Definitely influenced.

Solstickan is on so many things in Sweden becose it is sold for support of young children and elderly, it is a charity. In the 1930s, when it was all created, matches and lighters was in common use but to day it is not as mush. To ceep the money coming in to the charity the brand has ventured out to other products such as fire extinguishers, tee lights, boxes and anything else they can think about that has something to do with fire or lights. Not all the of the sale of this things goes to the charity so it has been under some criticism over the years.

Basically, an Illustrator and an artist are the same thing.... America's most famous "illustrator" was Norman Rockwell...however, his originals were painted on canvas, they were only regarded as illustrations, when they were used as cover art, usually on the covers of the Saturday Evening Post magazine. It doesn't matter what it is used for... art is art.

Hello again and thanks for your appreciation - and criticism. But in the 8 years of making videos the only complaint I have had about this aspect is yours. You may find it ugly and cheap but I'm afraid as long as you keep watching you're stuck with it.

Actually it's pronounced like Aye-narr. WIth the 'nar' part a bit hard to explain, I can't think of any good comparison in English, but if you think of 'car', but with a very 'a' (and, obviously, replace the 'c' with an 'n'), you come as close as I guess an English speaking person will get.

Thanks for the pronunciation. But I'm at the mercy of available information on the internet. When I first covered him in he unsung heroes series I guessed at Ayenar, but thought I should check for this one. And it came up with ee-nar. Now you tell me that's incorrect and frankly I now officially give up with foreign languages.

Hello again, and it seems you have got hold of the wrong end of the stick about the titling. Only the unsung heroes series features the horse and rider, and for the solo features I just use the most represenative image I can get hold of.
