As I remember this day, all the good pilots launched without no problem. We had a very good 82 km task with the start opening at 02:30 PM, 92 pilots on goal and the winner did it in 01:40 hr. So, it's not fair to judge the organization because an edited video. Andradas Cup organization is one of the best in the world.

Many competitors have a bad ground-handling, despite they are flying good and fast, they have a bad control feeling to their gliders. As a result, you can see such movies when the conditions becomes difficult.

It looks like a very difficult conditions with those high aspect wings. Obviously, those commenting, these guys can't fly have either never tried the sport before or simply have no idea how hard it is to take off in such turbulent windy weather.

most of them are experienced paragliders but taking off in strong winds requires different techniques. here in holland soaring is very populair among gliders, learning to start facing the glider and to "kite" your glider in high winds is a must. though not required handling if you want to have your licence because it still based on mountain flying where normal take-off is the standard procedure. only reverse start is briefly dealt with.

This year Proof of Campinas (105 miles) which took off 140 pilots and 63 arrived at GOL. It really was a spectacular year of flight, with optimal condition. Neste ano Prova de Campinas ( 105 km) onde decolaram 140 pilotos e 63 chegaram no GOL. Realmente foi um ano espetacular de voo, com otima condicao.

If you are flying constantly over 20 -30 years, you may encounter a few times take-off conditions, that are really appreciable.

@tyronius12 It looks well over 20kmh, I'd say closer to 30kmh in the gusts. Look at the gliders parked in the wind. They are comp wings from the time and trim is easily 38-39kmh. Unless you mean 20 Mph, then I agree totally. Only for the brave ;)

They were well respected competition pilots majority have had hundreds or even thousands of flying hours. The error is obvious and remedy is too simple to implement. These pilots knew the rule of thumb that during high wind, brake control is too deadly dangerous to use and should not be touched at all time during initial takeoff launch sequence specially approx 20+MPH wind with obvious lift. They knew that C or C/D riser is the only control for high wind takeoff - why did they not use it? Because majority of us don't have time to master PG ground handling. Majority of PG pilots will not waste their time travelling long distance, going up the hill just for ground handling - they want to fly straight away. REMEDY: We don't need to go that far because we can do ground handling locally. A perfect location for PGGH exercise is in an area with powerful rotors/vortex, gusts and even dust devils etc - this is the only way to simulate deadly turbulence within PG launching area or on-air... and it should be in the park with tons of obstacles that will trigger change of wind attitude once being hit by powerful wind. Trust me... we're not going to start ground handling in this type of dynamic area if we think we can't afford to handle the situation - if it's too strong "based on our skills", get out of the park right away - that's the first very important life saving lesson/experience that we can treasure forever - so pack the wing up and let's go home or wait until we can handle the force of nature "based on our skills" ;-) Enjoy the hobby and keep safe, always. 73

@thermalf : true and you even fly faster and further.. BUT: try to hike, or even better to climbe, with a hang glider on your back, try to bring it up on a small mountain road, pack it to fly to an other country or just try to pull the emrgency without getting hurt. In other words, if getting to the take off is less than convenient, allthough I lohe the hanglider, I still go for my paraglider.

its not a matter of being pretty. Its a matter of being safe for yourself and others. The competition should start from takeoff, like 60 seconds penalty for bad takeoffs. This is a good way to improve safety

"Problem" is that you have strong thermal lift on the takeoff, and it is difficult to launch, but when you solve that problem, you will have great weather to fly with many thermals

I think these boys and girls make 2 common mistakes. They should first put the parapente completely above their heads before making the turn. And they should not sit down right after takeoff but wait till their hight is about 10 meters, so when they go down they don't tipp over but can correct themselves. Learnt that in parapenteschool first lessons...

It's a pity that sttill the most competitionpilots (and other) can fly but can not start .But they are to pride or lazy to learn groundhandeling in rough conditions . We start a tandem in these conditions without a/c technique.or a competition glider even with 6 Bfr.

ROFLMAO haha really if you come from kiting/kitesurfing this looks as such a huge fail but is soo funny to watch. Just launch some meters dowhill and will make it so much more easy, then just pull them break and let it carry you uphill in the stronger wind then rise. Such a pitty they all competitors 0.o
