"Fear hinders our ability to feel free." [That trickle downs to the work. To get great work...] [Love that]

I made a mistake last night using a new sealer. I knocked the bottle over and frantically looked for things to seal to use up what spilled. One piece was a bad choice as it was charcoal, and it smeared. But it looks cool anyway, not as intended.

Most of all love the vulnerable experiences here of sharing those moments when it did not go right with gallery requests (create more like this) and product missteps ( delamination etc) - those specific examples ring so much more powerful than the general idea sharing. Really enjoyed this podcast.

Thank you for making painting about experience and not a 2 dimensional lifeless act. We have a relationship with our art. It’s an expression of ourselves in that moment in time. It’s not stagnant depiction of our knowledge of elements of design.

E95 felt like you were speaking directly to me. At 80 I still find rules getting in the way. But I find myself breaking free in many ways. Why not in my painting? Watch out, here I come! Beyond oil and cold wax there are many things I already have the materials for. Why not break a few of my own barriers and play, experiment, use everything in my studio to keep fresh work (and fun) flowing.

I love this quote from David Bowie: "All my big mistakes are when I try to second-guess or please an audience. My work is always stronger when I get very selfish about it."

I just love these podcasts particularly the observational stuff and the way you articulate your experiences good and bad.I just find myself nodding in agreement. Keep going this stuff is really valuable.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. The story of not making a second painting as successful as the one they chose. I think its really important for artists to get more than the highlight reel grom each other. I like the mistakes in my work from before because as i learn i can go back and read my work. I can appreciate it. The good bits. I can see how i do things differently now.

Great episode! I’m pretty new to painting and mistakes seem to part of my process! I’m hoping to grow into making the mistakes the jewels of my compositions. Wish me luck!

I'm so glad you reminded me that mistakes are good! You're right that it's so opposite to how we normally think. But so liberating to think, mistakes?, what mistakes?! Thanks Nick, I look forward to your insightful thoughts and interviews every week.

Thanks for talking about technical mistakes. Being new at this painting thing, I'm hit or miss and learning every time i use gouache, trying papers and thickness and strokes and size of works. Today i wished it was just paint by numbers so my brain would shut the hell up. Finally, I broke out the pencils and pastels with a "frk it" attitude and it turned out ok.
