I have to admit: Being brand new to pipe smoking, coming from cigars and (shamefully) cigarettes, I initially found your videos very informative, but a little slow. After burning my mouth and having to let my pipe rest a few times per bowl, I’ve rewatched some of your videos and realized that they are spot on. The timing, the attitude, and the atmosphere are all consistent with what pipe smoking seems to be all about. Thank you for your invaluable contributions to this tradition and to the YTPSC.

Perhaps the GREATEST channel on YTPC for beginners. I've been enjoying my pipes for about a year now and still find myself getting bit if I'm not present or mindful with my cadence. Or if I'm inconsistent, and try to re-ignite by sucking on the pipe instead of patiently re-lighting. These videos are like old textbooks from a favorite class that you come back to for reference

I’ve been lucky to not experience tongue bite, I think maybe because I smoked cigars for a long time and used to the tobacco. I’ve been smoking a pipe now for about 4 months and keep coming back to his videos for guidance. He’s absolutely amazing. I would be curious about what you have been smoking and your ability to taste the tobacco. I feel like I’m still training my palette to get all the flavors.

New to pipe smoking after 30 years of cigarettes ( good ones at least), so learning to have a slow breathe smoking rhythm ( the nose knows) is HARD. Your videos have been in incredibly helpful, so thank you. On that note your video cadence reflects the calm necessary to smoke a pipe. That’s a lesson in and of itself.

Thanks again, Muttonchop. Following your instructions, I can keep the bowl lit for a lot longer. Coming from cigars, I don’t get the “tongue bite” that everyone is talking about. I’ve been using the breathe method from smoking cigars. By using this method, you not only get the flavor of the tobacco, but also the aroma.

Tried smoking pipes about 10-15 years ago, but couldn't keep the darn things lit. Fast forward to a few weeks ago and I decided to try pipe smoking again for something to do during a camping trip. Couldn't leave it unattended for more than 10 seconds before it went out. Felt like a fool trying to look up "how to smoke a tobacco pipe", but I'm glad I did. First time after watching your technique, the thing stayed lit for about 25 minutes before I had to snuff it out. Thanks for the info, it's made it a whole lot more enjoyable. The rhythm really does help with the tongue bite

I bought a pipe those days -when sailing around the globe, but this is another story- and my buddy and me tried to smoke our pipes, but every single time we had tongue bite, so after 2 o 3 months of trying, we quit... and now I know why that freaking tongue bite ruined our experience. I would like to thank you Sir for your videos which I have been watching over the last few weeks. My Falcon pipe arrived a few days ago and after a few attempts that were not too bad I got it just right yesterday. I was relaxed, sitting in my daughter’s garden. It was a slightly cloudy, very calm day. I settled down and packed my pipe with Chieftain’s Lazy Day Mixture. After my false light I relit and leisurely smoked, “sipping” the smoke and taking my time to taste the tobacco, gently tamping every now and then. I managed to smoke almost 2/3 of the bowl before I had to relight and without overheating the bowl. It was a wonderful smoke. I am 55 and have smoked cigarettes since I was young. Stopping cigarettes (a nasty habit.) and moving over to pipe smoking was oh so worth it. It’s a very different experience. Far more pleasurable, and easier on my health (cigarettes gave me asthma.). Now I’ve just got to repeat the experience! lol. Best wishes from a convert in Scotland 🙏🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

You are a top class, cool teacher with good taste and knowledge. I smoke cigarettes and the only ones I like are the ones which use quality tobacco, like Davidoff or Benson & Hedges, although the latter, as its English, uses quite a strong tobacco. I have smoked pipe 4 times and all the time it went out. I haven't used a tamper then, and it's only after watching your vids that I realised how methodical the whole thing is. Cheers to you.

Big thanks. I'm from Vietnam and in my country, there are not many pipe smokers, so no one had shown me how to smoke a pipe. I was being smoke it like Laos tobacco, kind of smoke with Dragon Bone ( as I know how to call it in English), and I take the damn toung bite, and because I smoke too hard, it was shaking my brain pretty hard. So, thank you
@MoonlitVibe
@MoonlitVibe 5 жыл бұрын
This must have been auto-translated because it's produced some fascinating phrases there! "Kind of smoke with Dragon Bone" - for the life of me I can't figure out what might have been meant by this. Unless that's some sort of slang for a cigarette. I'm guessing "Laos tobacco" is rolling tobacco and I suppose cigarettes look a bit like bones, dragons breathe fire (allegedly) so...yeah I think I've got it after all. Dragon bones though, I love it.

This is far more helpful than the term "sip" alone because every time I've heard people talk about sipping from the pipe, I've imagined short staccato draws rather than long slow light drawing. The trouble with the former is that it wouldn't keep the pipe lit for long so this certainly sounds more feasible.

Thanks for this video. I've been trying to smoke a pipe for years unsuccessfully. I'll pick it up, burn the crap out of my mouth a few times and give up. Having a good demonstration of the timing and technique (specifically volume of smoke) was what let me get it "right". I still have some work to do, but I had the best pipe of my life last night. it was smooth and flavorful and thoroughly enjoyable. Thank you so much for this!

Tongue Block This is a means of controlling the amount of smoke being exhaled through the pipe, using the breath method. Breath method is generally used to cool the smoke on the exhale, and although it appears to work well, you need to keep in mind that the only organ in the body which can turn oxygen (hot) to CO2 (cool) are the lungs, so the ultimate of this will require a full inhale, which generally we don't like to do. There is a state your pipe will go into which I will call "Idle", which happens when you're neither drawing in or blowing out through the pipe, as in when the pipe is in your hand. It is characterized by a small to moderate smoke coming from out of the bowl. Tobacco is also being consumed at idle. So, if you're not an "inhale smoker", and all you're doing is breathing in and out through the pipe, you're actually doing little to cool the smoke, although I will say it is enough to stop tongue bite. I think it's "idle" that contributes all the heat. When inhaling or exhaling through the pipe, the smoke is actually in motion, and won't contribute as much heat as at idle. Therefore, to get a rhythm as described here would be the #1 way of controlling tongue bite. Keep that air constantly moving. However, I've noticed that when you exhale through the pipe, there is a lot more smoke coming out than you'd expect. That's because, not only are you exhaling what you're inhaling, you're also exhaling the idle smoke, which uses a lot more tobacco, because you are in fact exhaling oxygen, unless you have fully inhaled. This brings me to "tongue blocking". During exhale through the pipe, simply block the hole in your pipe with the tip of your tongue at some point. This will lower your tobacco use so you get a longer smoke. Also, try to keep your pipe "off-idle" as much as possible. I do notice that if you idle a lot, the bowl of your pipe will get so hot you cannot hang on to it. Tongue blocking has a down-side - it will contribute to making your bowl so hot you can't hold onto it, because to block the hole puts your pipe in idle a lot more often. I solve this problem by wrapping my bowl in a piece of paper towel. I don't see any pipe smokers on TV actually using the breath method. They simply sip in a little smoke and let it go out the mouth (I'm thinking of Mr. Rose, the surgeon on "The Royal" and also Sherlock Holmes played by Jeremy Brett). So what's with that?
@GarrettTheFool

Well, good thing my Pipe bowl is too small and (still being new) needs relighting a couple times throughout. I totally would have gotten tongue bite otherwise. I was sipping and blowing really fast, made my bowl hot. Thankfully I didn't succumb to the Dunning Krueger effect and came back for your knowledge. Probably saved me some trouble once I can keep the Pipe lit longer/upgrade to a bigger bowl!

Really finding this video series helpful. Wish they'd been around 4 years ago when I first tried taking up pipe smoking! I bought a cob pipe and loaded it up with a sweet, sticky aromatic straight from the pouch. Probably packed it all wrong. I ended up cooking my mouth so bad it took me days to recover. I threw the tobacco away and haven't touched a pipe since, until now. I've decided to try again and with the help of your videos hope I'll make a better job of it. Thanks.

You're welcome Stephen, just take it slow, practice packing your pipe correctly, obtaining a rhythm, (best way is to use the Breathe Method), and use an oriental forward blend like Frog Morton on the town, or Hearth and Homes White Knight, stay away from aromatics, and strait Virginia, and Virginia/ Perique blends for now until you are more experienced. Good luck my friend. 👍👍👍

+Muttnchop Piper why stay away from virginia / periques as a beginner?
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 8 жыл бұрын
Andrew Devall - As a beginner it's difficult to control how hot the tobacco gets, you have not perfected how to pack the tobacco properly, formed a steady rhythm while smoking etc. Virginia tobacco is high in sugar which naturally burns Hot, perique tobacco is spicy, so the combination of not knowing how to control the heat through technique, and smoking a hot/spicy tobacco is a recipe for instant tongue bite which turns new pipe smokers off instantly causing them to give up the Hobby without understanding what's happening.

Thank you! This video made me realize how to keep my bowl lit. For a while there, I wondered why it's only with breath method that I manage to smoke a bowl with 1-2 relights. Whenever I just try sipping it occasionally, it ends up going out and I need to relight it constantly. As I try to compensate the bowl gets hot and smoke becomes harsher. Well it seems that I just rhythm it too slow when not doing breath method.

Hi Muttnchop piper, I just started smoking pipe recently and this video helped a lot! at first, before I found your series I was taking too big puffs and now with your rythm tips it's less hot and much more enjoyable. Thank you for teaching the ways and showing the love of the pipe. I have started with Peterson Old Dublin which has a pretty nice taste to it, haven't tried other ones because I just started recently and didn't know if it was something for me so I didn't want to go all out on tobacco. Now with your technique and way of packing a pipe I am enjoying my pipe much more and will be looking for a few more tobacco flavours though we can't get a lot of the tobacco you have talked about (in other video's) but I am sure I will be able to find a few that are to my liking. I went to my local smoke shop, they had tons of cigars, ukuleles, and weed/cbd vape stuff. They had 7 briar looking pipes in a little cabinet, with a few very small corn cob pipes. Outside diameter about the size of a big thumb. I tested out the pipes like the way you showed. The nicer ones had the mouthpiece all loose. So I settled for a smaller briar pipe with the rough outside . $25 they didn’t seem to have much choice of tobacco. I asked the lady and she said she had no clue about pipes. Very sad. With my limited options and no help. But happy I got me a pipe and some tobacco I never heard of.

Hello Sir, I have a question for you: I received a pipe for Christmas, and being a Watson & G.G. it has a little metal filter that goes into the mouthpiece, to prevent the bad stuff to go up said mouthpiece. Since a gurgling can occur, and I can't take off the mouthpiece until the pipe gets cold, how do I get rid of the moisture at the bottom of the bowl? Do I have to remove that metal filter while smoking? Or do I keep it without getting worried? Thanks for your videos they're helping me a lot :)

I've been reading about tongue bite. I'm already a cigarette smoker, so I'm hoping it won't happen as easily. As I've been reading into it, i heard filters help. So i bought a pipe that can hold a filter. A question, though. Do you let your tobacco sit to dry out before you smoke it? I heard this can help with tongue bite. I keep wondering, though. What if i want to smoke on a whim? Is there a way i can always have tobacco ready to smoke? What do people do if they are traveling and don't have a place for tobacco to sit for an hour (or however long)? I bought mason jars to store tobacco in. I also bought a pouch to store it in. I'm wondering what good the pouch is if i always have to let it sit to dry out anyway? Or can i dry out a bunch of tobacco not all the way and then put it in the pouch to dry out some more but slower?

This has been the most helpful pipe video I’ve found on the internet, thank you so much for the help. The part where you said mouth bite will happen multiple times and to not give up gave me the hope I need to continue this beautiful art. Thank you mutton cop piper, thank you. I do have a question though. For tongue bite, how often as a regular smoker do you get tongue bite, and how long did it take to get a tolerance to tongue bite. Thank you for your time. best, -Michael

So I am more of a cigar smoker but Ive tried smoking pipes now and then. And eventually I confuse those two in the way of smoking.. Do you continuosly take "sips" from your pipe until its finished, or do you take breaks between puffs? I dont know how to smoke properly to have them taste like something.

Cool pipe a bit, and remove stem and FILTER then put pipe cleaner into your shank softly under your tobacco... ( I may be wrong, I am new also but,,, this has worked for me so far). Feel free to correct me ppl if I am doing this wrong.?..? That's my suggestion anyway...

@@rowdypiper8445 if you need to remove the mouthpiece from the bowl, the pipe needs to sit for at least an hour, or else it may break. When a pipe cools down completely, it also has to sit for a bit before it can be lit again. I don't know what to do either, but I do know that doing this may result in your pipe breaking.

No, and yes, most Aromatics light the same as an English, but sometimes like Molte Dolche you may hear a snap crackle and pop when lighting it, so sometimes you may have to light it more than once, but most times no, it's the same

Well this is what I call bad news for me. I just receive my first pipe, a Peterson Ebony Spigot (XL11) Fishtail with accessories and stuff, and got Kohlhase & Kopp 2019 winter blend. Everything looking good and from there everything that could go wrong, went wrong. First fall was badly packed, second (a day later) was to better but still bad, both times got the water pipe sound, the cleaning stick will not go more then 1.5 cm down from the mouth piece end because it is a bend stem, after the smoke and cool down I removed the stem and found a drop of water as you predicted, got a hot a heat tongue bite, tobacco would not stay lit, so I had to relight every time, and I ended up in a point were the pipe was getting hot and tobacco would not burn. I put a hygrometer in the bag of tobacco and it sits around 73% and it should burn just fine. I keep my cigars at 75% and that works the best for me, so at 73% should burn just fine. Overall a bad experience, because instead of relaxing and enjoying the taste and flavors, now I had constant tasks to perform constantly. I will keep trying for now, but if this and old silver stains, with a stem really dirty is the 180 Euro quality from a known brand, I am far from being impressed and worry about getting anything above 15 Euro corn pipe.

Vision Therapy Santa Barbara Optometry - Believe it or not, I have never come across a pipe with a screen in it, I'm not sure what the purpose is. Now I have heard of pipes and seen pipes with a wind pipe, but not a screen. I'll have to investigate this.
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 7 жыл бұрын
Vision Therapy Santa Barbara Optometry - the gurgling can be caused by two things, 1. Your tobacco has to much moisture, and as it burns the moisture turns to steam and settles to the bottom of your bowl. 2. You are a wet smoker and you salivate so much it runs down the stem into the bottom of the bowl. I would first try to dry your tobacco a little more and see if that helps. 👍👍👍

@Muttnchop Piper Hello, thank you for your informative videos! I'm so new that I've not even started yet but your videos have answer a lot of questions wether they were questions I knew I had or not! I was wondering though, when I see you puff you draw and the blow a rather fine stream of smoke out. How do you do that with out blowing the air back into the air hole? Or does that happen and it is not harmful or even beneficial?

Jared Earnest - if you haven't watched a video called using the Breathe method, it will explain a lot, but to answer your question the thin wisp of Smoke is achieved by sipping the smoke, but the more experienced you get the better you will get at it. :)
