This method is bound to enhance the relaxation aspect. Much of meditation technique involves focusing on the breath and how to control it. It's naturally relaxing.

Getting my first pipe tomorrow, Stanwell Brushed Black 84, excited to start this new journey. My brother in law and I are both married with kids and lead a very hectic life. Both our wives are stay at home moms (often I feel he and I are the lucky ones, I couldn’t imagine doing all that my wife does she really is an incredible woman), but I digress. He’s a police officer and I work in the tree industry, 60-70 hr work weeks with little sleep and kids ranging from 1 to 5. We’ve decided to pursue this as a means to both relax and unwind as well as grow closer together, he’s my best buddy and I’m really thrilled to get to share this with him. Thanks for all your informative videos, you’re a wealth of knowledge.

I've been using this method for about 2 weeks now and this works amazingly. I'm new to pipe smoking, and I've never been around it before. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. This is such a relaxing thing for me. I do this as a stress release, for some reason it's like all my anxiety melts away when I smoke tobacco pipe. I can't even describe how it feels to smoke a pipe at the end of a day, and using this method it's actually much more enjoyable and less frustrating. I can just sit back and enjoy it, way less re-lights and tongue bite. I look forward to using this method for hopefully 60, 70 more years to come (I'm only 24) thank you again for imparting this to my life. You seriously changed the entire pipe smoking experience for me.

I'm a cigarette smoker trying to use a pipe to get rid of cigarettes. I also love cigars, but good cigars are too expensive for me to smoke all day. I found a great cheap pipe tobacco I love the smell and taste of, but until I found this video I was about to give up on trying to smoke it. Thank you! I can now keep my pipe lit, and I'm also enjoying the satisfaction of manipulating the ember inside the bowl.

Great vid. I’ve been smoking for years but only recently have I begun to try to sloooooow down. I’ve sort of already been onto this technique without knowing, and it has changed the way I smoke. But after watching this vid I am much more aware of what I am doing and have been able to improve even more and gain more enjoyment out of my pipe. Thanks for taking the time to post this!

Great video. This video advanced my pipe smookikng so much. I’m fairly new to pipe smoking, and I have a problem, not related to the breathe method, but to cleaning my pipes. I smoke my pipes with filters, and then I leave the pipes to cool down, still with the filter inside, for 24 hours, before I clean them. The next time I smoke that pipe, its sour and take away a lot of the flavour. I simple have to clean the pipe with whisky, to get the full enjoyment out of the tobacco. All my pipes are Savinelli pipes with 6mm filters.

My Friend, thank you. I’ve been a pipe smoker for 20+ years and have always wondered why I get tongue bite, and why I bang through a loaded pipe so quickly with the harsh burnt taste consuming my experience. Turns out that I’ve been smoking my pipes all these years like a cigar. I’ve been trying the breath technique for two days now, what a revelation!! Enjoying the full bodied taste and the relaxing experience. You just changed my world! Appreciate you. Phill B. In Colorado.

You Sir are undoubtedly one of the greatest mentors of the pipe smoking community. I have tried pipe smoking few years ago, but then shortly after this adventure ended, and my participation in this lovely hobby was suspended for around 6-7 years. A few weeks ago I have found my box of pipes and attempted to smoke a few bowl of some deliciously smelling English blends, only to constantly bump into my old friend: tongue bite. Needless to say I was not pleased. And then, a couple of days ago I have stumbled upon your channel, watched several of your videos, including this one and the follow up on the topic. Today I have loaded my beloved Stanwell billiard pipe with some Virginia No 1, set down on a bench outside and smoked it until the bottom with a smile on my face and only pure delicious taste in my mouth. In short: Thank you, the knowledge shared by you on this channel is priceless. I wish you happy piping for long years to come

Boom!! What a fantastic difference maker...me: wet pipe, (gurgle), too many hot bowls, some tongue bite and way too many relights. 24 hrs later... minimal relights, I can actually taste significantly more, aroma is better (yeah), no gurgle and zero hot bowls!! Lord knows...hot smoke ruins it.. This dramatically improves an enjoyable pipe smoking experience. This is my third attempt to enjoy this generational experience. Ill perfect it over time and no doubt get even better results. You’re the man MCP thanks!!! ✌🏼😎

I have started smoking a pipe again after not doing so for 24 years. I had started smoking cigars and just fell out of pipe smoking over time. Now, I am smoking a pipe far more than cigars. I love the breath method. I was always a wet smoker with a hot bowl but no longer. It also prolongs the time of relaxation that comes with pipe smoking. I commonly get 1 to 1.5 hours of leisurely smoking time now. This has changed my pipe smoking experience by increasing the pure pleasure that comes from smoking a pipe.

Watched this vid because pipes and Guitars channel recommended it. Wow. Only been smoking a pipe infrequently about a year and preferred cigars because of relighting and other issues with pipe smoking. But tried the breath method as you described out in the garden just now and only had to relight twice in half an hour! And that was only because the ember was buried under a heap of perfectly burned light grey ash. Also the technique itself is much more relaxing. Leave the pipe in your mouth put you hands in your nice warm pockets and gently build up a nice thick smoke in the mouth. I would go so far as to say this is the correct way to smoke a pipe and should be what any new piper is taught.

I just started recently, me and my friend were smoking one night, and I'd get a lot of tongue bite because of drawing too hard and making the pipe a bit hot at some times, made my drink taste funny, but the flavour was there, just a bit rough, I tried this method and WOW, It's gone, not only that, it made my pipe smoking a very relaxing experience, focussing on breathing and slowing down a bit, take some time and focus on something enjoyable (especially when college gets too much), I have yet to master it, but I see a major difference in my first bowl and those after I encorporated the breathing method.

After screwing up and having to excorcize a relatively new MM Legend bent with salt and Everclear, watched your 2 videos, lit better, and tonight, I seem to have suceeded with breaking in and enjoying a bowl of Velvet. I actually packed it yesterday and left it in a Ziplock overnight too. I got my MM Ozark doing ok. It's got Lain 1Q in it and seems to be breaking in fine. I got a new MM Pride straight and got all 3 Casey Jones blends on sale for .99 cents each! Might regret it. Lol. I only have a bowl maybe once a week or maybe more spaced out with a drink.

Man! That video helped a lot with a few problems I had so far during my pipe journey. I'm pretty new into pipe smoking and I also had gurgling, a hot pipe and therefore sometimes an unpleasant taste experience with tongue bite. After watching your video I took a pipe which made the most problems so far and a tobacco I've never smoked so far (a sample of Peter Heinrichs - Chateau Henry #61). I must say: it was the most pleasant smoke I had so far! Tasty until the end (just finished the pipe 5 minutes ago). I can only imagine what my recent favorite tobacco (Kentucky Bird) would taste like in my favorite pipe from Peter Klein (a freehand) Denmark. Thank you so much for this video! PS: I also just micro gently sucked the smoke in when breathing in and just pushed an idea of smoke through the pipe when breathing out.

THIS IS AMAZING! I smoked a pipe in college, but quit for a long time. I picked it back up a couple of months ago when I inherited a collection of pipes from my father-in-law. I used to have a hot bowl, massive tongue bite, and a 'wet' pipe. Your were right on; this method enhanced the flavor of the tobacco I bought on your recommendation, Peter Stokkebye's Luxury Bullseye, and cleared the problems that made pipe smoking not great for me. Thank you, sir!

Smoked my first bowl today. I contrasted how I would smoke a cigar, just a gentle even draw, vs this method..absolute night and day. Cools the bowl, the smoke is delicious, and it is just more natural. I love it. Thanks again!

Josphelli hsilak - Exactly, one of the aspects I like the best is if you find the bowl getting hot, send more breathe through the stem and in a minute or 2 the bowl is cooler, absolutely amazing. 👍👍👍

Ha! I hadn't watched any of your videos actually smoking until now. I did learn something: even a long-term smoker can learn to do it right. I recently picked up the pipe again after a twenty-year hiatus and spent months relearning what some old-timer had taught me back in the day. I don't understand how anyone can smoke a pipe and enjoy it more than a couple times (not to mention wrecking pipes with tar). Sure is good to see you proliferating the proper smoking technique. Cheers, sir!

On another note, I recently salvaged an estate Peterson pipe (I've rusticated it and it's pretty cool) and am enjoying my first go at smoking a first-rate pipe. Your video explaining the choice you made and the reasons for picking a Savinelli above all convinced me as to my next quality pipe purchase. Your input is appreciated.

When I smoked my first full bowl today, I would breathe in my nose and suck a little bit of smoke and breathe in and out a few times with my nose and whenever I would blow out a little from my mouth I'd get some out of the mouth and then some through the pipe. I only had to light it 2 or 3 times after the false light. Got a pretty big nic buzz that lasted about an hour. I was smoking some American Spirit burley so there's the reason with the big buzz. Super super relaxing 10/10 would recommend.

Thank you sir for such great information. I own a Floggelwerks churchwarden pipe and being new to piping, I took to watching all your videos. The breathing method is such an excellent way to enjoy my pipe I don’t think I will smoke using any other method! It took me a bowl or two to master but it seems I got it! Thanks again!

Wow. Thanks for this. I’m new to pipe smoking also. I smoked cigarettes for many years, quit those. Started cigars not long ago which I enjoy. My wife bought me a pipe and I’ve been smoking it like a cigar, no inhale but trying to maximize smoke the way I do a cigar. This is so much better. You really get the nuance of the tobacco flavor. Thank you so much!

Wow I sure wish I would have learned this method last year when I first picked up the pipe. Now this is relaxing. Can keep the bowl lit for most of the smoke. No more gurgle and I can taste the tobacco. Thanks for your videos and time it takes to make them. It helps guys like me who are learning how to enjoy a good bowl without any live mentors (I don't personally know anyone whom smokes a pipe anymore)

Thank you very much for this method. I'm new to pipes and it really improved my smoking. The thing that bothered me the most was the heating of the bowl, sometimes to a point when it was hard to hold the pipe and I had to put it down to cool. Practicing this method keeps my bowl cool, maintains my pipes much healthier and dramatically improves the taste of the tobacco.

This is how it should be!! If you watch people on shows or movies they always suck the pipe, which is pretty crummy...this type of "diaphragm" breathing is the type used in meditation/just general physical wellbeing. It makes pipe smoking so much more enjoyable, and it's the way I've been doing it since I started, can't believe how little I see it (the sip/suck method is seemingly everywhere)

I'm a brand new pipe smoker and this is the most useful information I have found so far. I could actually keep it lit by breathing into the pipe. It felt a lot like I was making out, the back and forth motion, give and take, massaging. Making sweet love to that bowl of tobacco! Haha

I am new to pipe smoking and too have had troubles with toungebite, massively. As a cigarette smoker i guess ive learned some bad habits regarding draw force and cadence, and i am having a hard time "unlearning". Your videos have given me a lot - as is the case for many others i see - of great tips and i am slowly getting the hang of it. When i bought my first pipe, i rushed my choice as the shop was closing, and went for a very nice looking billard design that caught my eye (rusticated Stanwell 107). This was my first screwup as it is short, thinwalled and has a smaller bowl than average. So ofcourse i immediately got toungebite, clogs and a burning hot pipe that i couldnt keep lit if not costantly puffing - because i didnt know how to pack it correctly. Powering through the issues and taking in the advice ive found here, stuff is starting to iron out and i now have a better control and overall experience when smoking. So thanks for that. Ive started working on "the breath method" yesterday and damn this is tricky for me, nose breathing makes me inhale everything, not that it is a major issue as i am used to inhaling, but thinking that i shouldnt makes me stress the practice a bit, and i again end up with a pipe that is way too hot. At the same time i have a tounge that is next level hyperactive so keeping that in check also makes it even more difficult. Oh yeah.. and then there is the wetmouth issue.... I will get there eventually i hope, without ruining the pipe. I know i should probably just buy another pipe more suited for a beginner, i will sometime next week, but knowing myself i think i am just too stubborn to let my current one go on the "giveup". Any thoughts are most welcome. -Again, great, helpfull and informative content. Thank you.

I've been smoking a pipe on and off for years, and exclusively recently to get away from cigarettes. I used to hate the pipe, picked up some corncob pipes a year ago and found Dunhill's EMP to be the best thing for me. just this past weekend a friend gave me an assorted lot of vintage estate pipes and about two pounds of various assorted tobacco's. I've had tongue bite all week.... watching your videos has helped select the proper tobacco's and pipes to go together, and this breathe method works well also! thanks for the tutorials and you have a new subscriber!
