I like how you clearly covered this much overlooked skill of managing range, and setting up killer counter punches without wasted movement eg the side steps leads to skilled pivoting in turn allowing deadly check hooks from a stable base. The most skilled boxers master the fundamentals and make it look effortless at high speed because of the repeated and endless practice. In summary: Perfect practice makes perfect execution. Look at Mayweather, Lomachenko and James Toney etc.

Love your videos and keep them coming!I have seen another form of right pivot when you step with your right foot diagonally out of the target and then turn your body towards the target. Almost like your video when you hook with left to cover his eyes while taking a right step and then twist body with a cross from the new angle.

Thanks a lot for this video in particular and all the other great tutorials you have shared with us! I have noticed Russian boxers do this specific sidestep but never saw American/Western boxers employ this technique - is it just me or could it be that this is typical of a Eastern European school of boxing?? Why is it so difficult to find more videos on this?

hi, great video and i have got a question: when stepping to the right: why do you use your left foot first to the right? wouldnt it be better to use your rear right foot first? by using the left foot u are crossing your feet and in case you geht hit in a bad position!? especially for me as a soutpaw stepping to the left usinf my right foots first: if i accidently get hit, even when covered, the force of the punch could set me off balance. So better step with the rear left foot first to the outside/rear, then drag the right foot and simultaniously punch a left hook/straight shot full power of hip rotation.

This is NOT how you side step in boxing. You pivot off the front foot. When he's moving left, he's actually changing his stance all together. There is no balance in this. In his heavy bag video, he does a better job of it. I'm not sure if this is just focusing on street fighting or a different style (which I don't know much about), but this is not something you'd do in a boxing ring, ideally.

His legs are not so close to destroy his base. As a Boxing / Thai practitioner, I will definitely work on this. Thai fighters like to brawl and punch through a lot of their targets. My instructor does not like stiff jabs, which is something see in boxing. He wants power jabs. Also, the 1-2 combo is one of the most widely used. When the 1-2 punch is delivered, being able to pull this off cleanly could open up the door for crushing body kicks. I.e., moving to the right it sets me up for a left switch kick. I do not want my switch to be so far apart anyway. I quick switch with me feet closer together,
