@theINQBS5 жыл бұрын
That's not entirely true though. You also must give credit to an opponent who does everything correctly to pull you off your game. So while in essence it may be your fault, you're in there with someone of similar skill and training. It's a chess match of sorts and IN trying to pull someone off their game so you can rip shots, they are studying you just the same, looking for tells they will remember in order to find openings. And it's Like Mike Tyson said… Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face. And some people just have the brute power that no amount of proper footwork and body discipline and positioning can overcome. If you study Manny Pacquiao closely, more often than not he's throwing punches from the incorrect natural stance, rather than a boxing stance as this gentleman demonstrated here. HOWEVER, he knocks people out, there must be something most people miss and mistake it for him being this supremely disciplined, well-schooled boxer, and that's just not right. Manny s one such person who possesses brute strength and can deliver KO power even from the wrong stance. Had Oscar Delahoya not been on the coke and trained properly, his traditional boxing discipline would have outclassed Pacquiao easily and he would have won. The Oscar who destroyed Chavez, schooled Trinidad, and fought Moseley would have creamed Pacquiao on his best day. And keeping in mind that Oscar is a left handed fighter fighting from the conventional stance, once he set people up and threw the left Hook, it was usually good night. His right hind is excellent, but his left hand is crisp and packs brutal power. THAT'S how devastatingly important proper footwork and mechanics are in boxing and it makes all the difference. And that's why I can't watch MMA fights without cringing. Poor or non-existent footwork and mechanics, and for the most part no defense. They just throw shots and hope to be the first to land on the other guy's chin. Look at most MMA KO's and the guy who gets caught is too busy throwing back instead of trying to block or time a counter. just sad really.

I know in MMA its not completely squared up. But the things this boxing guy is teaching, is not how you stand up in MMA. This is why, Conor, didnt bring in boxers to train him vs mayweather. They would try change his style up too much, and he would be at a bigger disadvantage vs floyd. MMA stance is fundamentally different. I can see however, how a top MMA athlete, can utilise what he is teaching. But it would not serve as the best fundamentals for seminar material, to new athletes.

I'm training to be an mma fighter. I train in kickboxing, boxing, muay tai, freestyle wrestling, jiu jitsu, greco Roman wrestling and I dabble in judo and samba mildy. Quite simply, they're not going to be good mma fighters. You need to know EVERYTHING, he isn't trying to change their overall style he's just working on their boxing. Take GSP for example, he undoubtedly was a wrestle based fighter, but he still utilised boxing, karate and stand up techniques. To really grow as a fighter, you must always listen. I for the first 3-5 months would insist I could only grapple, then I saw how I need to box for mma and now I can box. Now almost a year in and I'm strong everywhere. Don't get me wrong I'm not ready to fight yet (I've done an interclub jiu jitsu thing 2-2) but that wasn't a fight by any means, and tbh I don't want to fight in a Jiu Jitsu only style comp. Listen and you will learn.
@TootsMcPootsUncleDaddy6 жыл бұрын
@@eddietasker9110 it really depends, I'm 9-2 as a fighter and I can tell you this, there is wayyy too much to learn to try and learn everything. The consensus in MMA is that when you begin, wrestling is the most important thing to learn. BJJ taught and trained in the right way can incorporate alot of wrestling, but being a wrestler since kindergaten gave me a huge advantage over my opponents. The next thing I would tell you is that it's important to learn SOME form of stand up. If you try to learn everything about Muy Thai and everything about Boxing, it will be impossible for you to implement them all because the stances are different, the fighting philosophy is different and the general striking tactics are different between the two. What I'm basically saying is even if you could Master them all, some of what you learn will eventually be useless. Now, if you're talking about taking the most effective techniques from each, that's a different story, but if you're trying to learn too much of each one you will be lost in the fight game. It's almost better to master one discipline while trying to become average at another. Your focus has to be on developing a level of skill your opponent doesn't have in a certain area, and this is hard to obtain if you're dividing your time between all of those disciplines. Some of techniques compliment each other nicely in MMA, other techniques, like some ppl have pointed out, will leave you wide open to an attack that isn't legal in that discipline. Being a wrestler I had to learn certain things I was taught was wrong fo MMA, even though most of what I know works, so be wary of what you're being taught because it doesn't always translate to efficient cage fighting techniques!!

Best thing I learned from my coach was when to take the "boxers stance". If you're only boxing, dont deviate from this stance. If there are more elements in play, boxers stance is not as mobile and it opens you up to not only leg kicks, but a number of take downs as well. So, in turn, know when to be mobile but know when to stand and throw. You can circle with that stance but you can't check a kick or stuff a takedown as easily
@Darealmclovin475 жыл бұрын
"concentrate on your own game" This is very true. I don't box yet but I do play chess, there was a time when I was playing at my worst and what I realized is that I was too worried about what my opponent was doing that I couldn't focus on what I was doing. Once I started focusing on only my moves I improved by so much.

MMA fighters who don't want to "mess up their style" have no right to call themselves mixed martial artists. The whole idea of mma is to take a variety of different styles and merge them, picking out what works for you and removing what doesn't, then replacing it with something better. If they come to his classes and say "you're gonna try turn me into a boxer" they're right, and they're idiots! Because they SHOULD become a boxer while training with him, learn to think like a boxer, move like a boxer, fight like a boxer. Only after they have a solid grasp of what it is to be a boxer can then they start to merge it into their mixed martial arts. If all they worry about is "my style" then they don't deserve to learn in the first place

For example first day of class I was already hitting the heavy bag and doing 1-2 combos on the mitts!!! I had no idea how to punch, no idea how to stand, these fuckers didn't even help me with the hand wrap. Two of my friends joined a week prior to me and were sparring already but the difference is they can punch hard and wrestled D1 in college so I guess the 'trainers' feel they are athletic enough to compete. I started looking for help elsewhere and this channel has by far been the most helpful as Marvin's ability to teach mechanics+area of focus+theory allows the student to see the big picture which changed my mindset of boxing from "throw a punch and hope it connects" to chess. Mike Tyson had a very square stance. The sideways stance is vulnerable to leg kicks. There is a reason why Muay Thai fighters stand square. The square stance is also compatible with wrestling/grappling. IMO, Mike Tyson's peek a boo style is the most compatible style of boxing in MMA. The ducking and weaving is compatible with going for the takedown. Just don't bob sideways too much...

+Dizni That's why I think Boxing Is better than Muay thai. I feel like if you were to use Muay thai In the streets, there's a more chance of you taking more damage to your body than if you were to use boxing. Muay thai rely too much on the size of gloves. They don't slip, duck, Bob to side, shoulder roll, create angles ect. I feel like Muay thai just lacks the fundamentals on fighting. Without proper fundamentals, no matter how much Weapons you have, you won't survive long In the octagon or the streets.
@MrScar6657 жыл бұрын
Boxing is no way better than muay thai overall. I feel like knife would beat both boxing and muay thai in the streets.

Thanks for preaching the correct way. It's not easy to find coaches like this man today, not many true boxing gyms are out there. The world is full of kick boxing, muay thai and mma schools, they get people in by the masses, most of them end just hitting the bag or just each other with no benefit. Boxing is the base,the footwork, balance, agility, body movement that boxing teaches you cannot be found in any other martial art.
@mrelegant26776 жыл бұрын
For the people saying that this stance is bad for low kicks (or kicks in general), yeah it is true, but you can try to combine muay thai/kick boxing stance with the "true" boxing stance. Tj Dillashaw, Dominick Cruz are both great exemples.

Right on! Now this video is from 2012, and since that time we have seen the rise of excellent technical boxers with solid fundamentals: Vasil Lomachenko, Naoya Inoue, Genaddy Golovkin, and Artur Beterbiev. These boxers have the stance, the footwork, the angles - everything that makes boxing the beautiful art that it is meant to be.

I agree with cardiomanify...... If you stand like that all the time you're going to eat a hell of a lot of leg kicks. You can't be so absolute, every stance has pros and cons which means in some situations it will not work.... You have to adapt to the situation. There's no such thing as one stands for everything.

you are very prone to leg kicks in this stance and its not a very good stance to check kicks, but for mobility its actually one of the best in my opinion. Also you can just teep the person if they come in with a leg kick with no boxing setup or just backstep. Its rather easy, just watch saenchai and other muaythai/k1 fighters backstepping. Get use to backstepping until it becomes second nature.
