Operator stops short of mark : "It's out of focus" AC : "Well, you didn't hit your mark". Doesn't matter where the camera is, you keep it in focus regardless of where the marks are. You use that rangefinder inside your skull.

I disagree with some of the things the focus puller does in this video. There are several times where he changes elements of the scene like "slow your walk down for me" "give me more lead time" and the shot with the water bottle changed to showing him putting it down instead of picking it up. Some DP's will just hire a new focus puller at the end of the day. The tool set is not ideal so some of the shots have to be changed for that reason, which is not the 1st AC's fault in this situation. Also The red rock ff is has some play making those direction changes more difficult than they would be with a better follow focus. A whip and speed crank is a really hard way to pull focus, a wireless unit would definitely be the best but you can't do that if you don't have the budget for it. Another important note is where he is measuring to, this camera has an adapter which is where the image resolves to so he measures to the lens adapter (letus?), on almost any other camera you measure to the sensor plane. Props to the old school way of pulling focus which is very difficult, but you can't change the shot for anything other than something physically impossible like minimum focus issues or tight places with no path to work.

I would have mistaken the focus puller for the maintenance guy. Focus pulling is not his day job, right?

I'm thinking about getting a headset monitor to use to pull focus. Thoughts?
@BradleyThomas7 жыл бұрын
But if you have a monitor, it's way easier to hit the shots. Some of these would have been so much quicker if he had a monitor to look at.

You have way more control of your focus when you manually pull it. You're not always wanting to focus on the main subject. You also can't achieve as smooth of a focus pull with autofocus.

"Take this to your eye!" What? This seems like a very long video on things to definitely avoid when pulling focus on a professional set. It is also painful to watch. "Try not to move that chair." Poor guy literally has to sit down on a rolling office chair. "The Art Of Pulling Focus". More like "The Art Of Not Nailing Focus Once Despite Many Useless Measurements Involving Or Not Involving Arm's Length, Hardly Ever Marking Anything On The Disc And In The End Blaming It On The Actor Or Saying 'Sorry, such a long pull...'"

cameras are already getting so good at tracking, autofocus and tap to focus. u wont need a puller anymore. the canon 1dx markii is very good at autofocus tracking as are the a6500 and gh5. u can just tap the screen and it follows the subject thru the shot
@BradleyThomas7 жыл бұрын
There are some fantastic cameras at focusing, but at the end of the day they're computer systems that process very black and white. There will be times where they'll catch something you weren't aiming for because it just happens to be the dominant thing in the tap radius. Plus it's always nice working with an AC who can help wit kit maintenance and what-not.

for the sake of peoples jobs i hope ur right. but over the past 100 years theyve said a lot of human jobs couldnt be done by computers and machines. unfortunately many of those jobs are now done by machines and computers and are done better than a human could do them. but as filmmaking is an art, there will always be a need for the human touch
@miguelcastro57545 жыл бұрын
Fast autofocus is good and all but even the best af in the world can’t read your mind. Cant read if you want to pull in or pull out. Can’t read if you want to focus at the background while the dominant is in the front. It can’t be creative. It just assumes & assumptions are no good in filmmaking. Unless the next af can read your mind, that focus puller job is not going anywhere.

Cameras are getting better, but filmmakers also have to make artistic decisions, which cameras will never be able to do
