Thank you Warner Bros, The Film Foundation, and all Directors involved for restoring Rio Bravo and East Of Eden, two of my absolute favorite movies of all time. And thank you for continuing to restore so many other films, both well known classics and underrated. And of course, thank you for TCM for keeping all of these classics circulated and remembered, as they deserve to be.

Glad she mentioned pre-Code films. They were incredibly modern, daring even for today and not in the conventional ways. Not restoring and conserving pre-Code films gives people an extremely distorted idea of the past and the people who lived during it.

The current generation might not be aware of what movies used to look like. Growing up, I remember seeing scratches and dirt on the TV screen. Then over time, the color fades. Now we get to enjoy older movies that look better than brand new. I am exceedingly grateful for all the work it takes to clean up old movies (and TV shows).

SO stoked that they chose "The Strawberry Blonde" (1941) for restoration, it's one of my fave Cagney films I got under their made-to-order "Archive" DVDs series years ago, a long neglected gem overshadowed by Cagney's gangster movies that well deserves this attention & treatment, that's the "kind of hairpin" it is! 😉

It is almost criminal this is all happening too late. Some 90-95% of films made before sound have rotted or dissolved away; the percentage after that is not much lower. That work, and our history, are lost every time a can of film crumbles or is so damaged it's nearly unwatchable. It's kind of like burning books, and we should be just as outraged.

That is awsome! Specially for movies of the pre code era. They are so different. The plot, the dialogues, you sense that those are movie made for grown ups and they also have a care free feel that would be back only in the late 1950s through European cinema. I hope not only WB but also other companies do it so I will be able to watch more movies of the pre code era. And after, of course.

..... yeeeaaaaaah. So why did WB decide to systematically scrap their Home Video DVD department? I've noticed that many WB titles that I've ordered on DVD via Amazon Prime are now being transfered to DVD-R discs. This obsession with streaming has bit the studio so hard in the backside, it amazes me that they assume consumers only like streaming services. And to those who want to dismiss my comment as an old man whining digitally, I make no apologies for supporting DVD sales that actually supports the pocketbooks of companies AND entertainers! Oh yeah, and let's not forget owning the artist's work restored and uncut to watch anytime i want!❤

Did anyone see the Rio Bravo restoration ? Just asking for, I just checked and made a screen cap at 3:41 to compare the same screen cap on the Warner Bluray at 57:27 and I was quite puzzled. The colors on the restoration pop more than the bluray which looks almost washed out, however on my TV screen and projector, the restoration looks like details have been erased like a pimple(?) on Dean's right cheek (visible on the bluray screen cap), details on his hat (the stains of sweat look less detailed!) and his face looks kind of waxy compared to the bluray. I hope it's only YT and that the 4K bluray won't be like that with some dnr applied like it seems here.

It's wonderful to see this but I'm trying to reconcile this aspect of the restoration work WB is doing while reading in the same month that staff are reporting 1940s-60s vintage Warner Bros promotional materials (posters, press kits, memorabilia) are being thrown into dumpsters in Burbank at the WB offices. Would be nice to see TCM acknowledging this -- or even trying to work with WB to transfer this stuff to the Academy's museum. Once it's gone -- it's gone.

Its great that we have technology like the Lasergraphics digital scanner to make copies of old movies. The problem is that you can't digitize a movie or television print that doesn't exist anymore. And if a print does exist, like that of the Technicolor swashbuckler "The Black Swan" from 1942, the studio management in the late 1970s shipped off the original Technicolor matrices to a Los Angeles garbage dump. To save on storage costs.

I hope The Film Foundation will also consider remastering animated features as well. Not just Disney but also animated films from Universal, Paramount, Sony, and even Warner Bros. As Guillermo del Toro said... “Animation is cinema. Animation is not a genre. Animation is ready to be taken to the next step, We are all ready for it. Keep animation in the conversation.” Animation is more than kids stuff, a lot of really mature, highly acclaimed adult animated films exist. Look at Flee for example... A documentary about a real life person escaping just as the Soviet-Afghan War was beginning, staying in the USSR for years, looking for freedom until he's finally free, and living in Denmark. This got 3 awards at the Oscars for Best Documentary, Best International Feature, and yes, Best Animated Feature. This is one adult animated film not to be ignored and thought as a kids film, real people died, and this person lives on to tell his story about how he risked his life!

She says it would be tragic if East of Eden had disappeared, What about shows like Infinity Train being disappeared from all streaming and ota services...? All the hard work and effort from the creators, disappeared overnight, because HBO/WB/HGTV didn't want to pay the creators. Raised by Wolves was another incredible piece of film also disappeared. This entire video is incredibly ironic given what is happening at HBO/WB/HGTV I am a massive advocate for the need to restore films, of all manner. I would argue this also applies to videgames, music, literature and arts of all forms. But the two facedness of the people in corporate is just disgusting.

Anyway it's a shame what's being done to old movies and TV shows, The idea of coloring old black and white movies is ridiculous.
