Overwatch feels like a weird example of bad movement in video games since pretty much every character has a unique movement ability. Some of them are pretty simplistic and don't require much thought or experience, but Lucio, Doomfist, Junkrat, Winston and Pharah - who's movement goes far beyond pressing shift, including performing actual rocket jumps - all have compelling and rewarding movement systems. Doomfist was a later edition, but I remember having a lot of fun messing about with the physics of his Rocket Punch, figuring out which angled walls you can punch diagonally up, which car you need to hit to fly up to different points of the map, when you need to cancel it to travel as far as possible. Movement is really important in Overwatch, it feels strange to reduce it to one ability of one character, especially when all of that character's abilities can be used for movement.
@albingrahn55762 жыл бұрын
exactly. also ironically enough, pharah can rocket jump on top of all of her movement abilities, making her kit much more complex than tf2 soldier when it comes to movement.

i stopped watching the original video because of this. it felt like he wasn't really making a point, or at least a good one because the entire premise of his argument was flawed. why watch a video about movement from a guy who doesn't even know that pharah can use her other abilities for movement?

Out of your list the only one that could actually be used as an example is Lucio,Pharah's rocket jump is nothing special to achieve lol
@Pheatan2 жыл бұрын
@@gabrielpasqualini8413 an actual rocket jump from tf2 isnt hard to achieve either. It’s about how you can utilise the tools to make movement faster and fluid. I haven’t played overwatch in years or particularly care about it but to say that it doesn’t have complexity in its movement is reductive and just wrong.

Ow devs allow for plenty of shmoovement. Soldier can rocket jump and then sprint mid air to reach strange places. Bastion cam throw a grenade at his feet then time a jump input to be sent flying. Wrecking ball is a wrecking ball with the insanely satisfying spiderman-esque grapple mechanic. To have that in an fps is crazy. Ow is built on shmoovement and thats a very conscious decision. To say otherwise because one specific character did not copy one specific tech from another game is honestly stupid if we were looking it it objectively. Although I know the video is meant as a joke and should not be taken seriously which is fine of course. But people defending the "overwatch bad movement take" as if it has any merit are wrong.
@cyrus42852 жыл бұрын
@@bfc9467 I have to agree that Ow does have some movement (soldier/bastion jump and lucio being pretty fire). But, in terms of "built on shmoovement" and "looking at it objectively" the engine that Ow runs on is more strict than almost all of the games listed in the video. If there have been some new developments in Ow movement tech regarding the engine feel free to correct me, but a lot of the shmoovement that is talked about in this video are universal concepts that the engine applies to every situation or character in the game (source engine air strafe, source engine momentum conservation, melee wave dashing), not character specific techniques that make a character move/can be slightly exploited. This isn't to say that ow doesn't have movement, just that the engine is specifically built to limit the player in certain regards.

Always erks me when they don't talk about quake engine... 1996, then 2 years later you get "goldscr" the preaccessory to source aka half life. Quake and half life were the first for movement 3D, because it's one of the first. Quake also was one of, if not the first game with rocket jumping. Personally if you went my big news from a movement expert from gaming, wait for a game/mod called "momentum". In my opinion, If they don't mess it up, momentum should be the best "movements" base game every made. That's what it's being developed for, to teach every movement tech in every game and bring into one.
