The mist stops because of the fires being set by the military. That's the biggest "twist" of the whole film. The mist wasn't supernatural or divine, it was just fog. The film depicts the character's worlds being devoured by a Lovecraftian nightmare, but in the end it wasn't really a big deal. One town got destroyed and the military had successfully contained the situation in only a day. For all we know, Norton's group, who left the store just after the fog rolled in and well before any monsters arrived, may well have reached the edge of the fog and escaped without ever encountering any monsters at all. We see the fog and just assume there's nothing beyond it because we can't see it anymore, like the character in the book who suggests the ground is gone.

Norton's group maybe, however Norton himself, only a pair of legs return. We do see in the military caravan going past David in the end the woman who left by herself, so she survived, but she was the first one to leave, before Norton's group. The one thing the film made clear was the fact these creatures weren't attacking the humans as targets, but just living out their ecosystem on Earth instead of wherever. It's why the birds go after the insect creatures for the most part. Only one hits a person. The one girl dies from the insect because she freaks out and moves around a bunch. Carmody survives because she holds perfectly still, which makes her not a threat to the insect. However if you're a normal person in that situation, where you have seen others die in horrific ways, most would look to some kind of answer that they can comprehend, like God doing it.

Then the last soldier gets sacrificed and the main character spends the Rest of the night planning to escape which they do first thing in the morning.

DemoPlays The best thing about Stephen King is that The Mist is much smarter than just saying (religion is evil and stupid.) Yes. I despise the evil woman, of abusing her religion to spread more fear. BUT The Mist shows in fact evil, abuse of power and human fanatical desire to play gods with the world and other people. 1: Mother Carmody abusing her religion against others to get power, and we see how easily people breaking down and kill each other. (A religious human who played God.) 2: The American military ( in some vertions) created The Arrowhead Project, which slipped all the monsters into our world. It was not on purpose, but it was science that let them in. (Scientists who were playing gods.) Ultimately it depends on a chicken or the egg question. "Are people evil because religion is evil?" "Or is Religion evil because people are evil?" Stephen King replied that it is because WE humans are evil by nature, and will will not admit it and pushes it over on religion and politics. "As a species we're fundamentally insane tally. Put more than two of us in a room, we pick sides and start dreaming up reasons to kill each other :" Stephen King.

I read the novella first, and expected a pretty faithful retelling. Minor changes aside, I was pretty comfortable going into the end. Then.....yeah, it hit pretty hard. Out of left field, if you already "knew" what was going to happen. One of those great subversions in cinema - one that actually works.

As much as I hated Carmody, I like how she is portrayed in this movie and the actor really did her job very well. She really represent religion in the middle ages, it was dark in those very earlier days and what happen when people used religion to explained unknown logic that cant be explained. Boom, useless human sacrifice and be killed off extremely easily. I cant blame David for his action at the end of the movie. Who knows what I would have done but I really would have those thought that he really did and carried out those action only to be heart broken in the end. And thats what makes this movie so damn good from other perspective.

It's a metaphore, that sometimes what appears to be "good intentions" on the surface turns out not to be in the grand scale of things, often the result or combination of self-righteousness, oversensitivity or ignorance. Doing what you feel is *right* can be ultimately be absolutely wrong and doing more harm than good in the end. Example: An anti-vaxxer mom worries about the good health of her children and others (a good intention for all intents and purposes), and would like to see vaccins banned everywhere (a very bad thing for the whole of humanity). In the movie, the main protagnist has the very good intention of wanting to protect his son and other people from the crazed Carmody and survive this ordeal, however his every decisions ends up directly causing the death of every single one of them. Had he stayed quiet back at the store with is group, many could've have survived. But yeah, hindsight is always 20/20, I would have attempted the same things he did, really.

I always interpreted the main theme of this film to be human nature, and the false veneer of internal morality that a funtioning and safe society engenders. Mrs. Carmandy is obviously mentally unstable right from the beginning of the film. She stands in contrast with the socially conditioned characters who play nice while being deeply selfish. As the movie goes on, society collapses, and 'normal' people break every taboo they hold sacred, one by one. Right and wrong breaks down, rationality and fantasy breaks down, sanity and insanity breaks down, and eventually even the group who clung to society's norms the longest break down, culminating in a father killing his own son. When society is restored, the full weight of the father's moral failings hit home, punctuated by the only woman who only acted selflessly throughout the entire movie, the mother with her kids at home, being existentially rewarded by surviving the ordeal with her kids by her side.

The woman didn't act "morally" - morally would have been to have prevented the Mist from occurring in the first place and thus saving all of those people. She did a reasonable action in the circumstances that were produced by that failure, that's all. "Protecting your kids" in a crisis isn't exactly morally profound. You could also say she was *immoral* for abandoning people she knew were in trouble to try to get to people who for all she knew weren't even in danger. Unless she lived in a social hellhole there was already a plan set up for neighbors to watch her kids in the case of emergency or if she had an accident. Society didn't come from a void, or a magical creation by an external agent. There must have been a time *before* society in our evolutionary history, therefore the absence of society didn't lead those animals to murder each other, or at least what murder did occur was overcome by social tendencies which allowed society to develop in the first place. King is a real Edgelord who thinks that humans are doomed to murder each other at the slightest sign of trouble, if his array of frantic fiction is anything to go by. He appeals to people with a dark view of human nature, but this view doesn't reflect the real world. Just as with any theory based on specific examples but lacking in absolute cohesion, you can always *point* to specific evidence to support the Edgelord claim that "humans are evil" - just watch the Nightly News without thinking about the reality behind it - King probably does.

Its nothing new to point out that we have "evil" tendencies as much as good ones too. The real deal is that we somehow evolve trough civilazation into the concepts that we like to force on to nature, such as love, compassion and empathy. Those are human concepts (as all concepts for that matter). Nature it's just what it is. There is no goodnes, cruelty nothing; just the urge to survive. But a lot of people tends to view it as a Disney movie with cuttesy animals and peace, when the truth is that seen from our human perspective nature is cruel. We, and some other especially inteligent species are the only ones capable of something even resembling compassion and empathy. The rest is pure instinct, more specifically, the survival instinct.

IIRC The reason he shoots his son isn't to get rid of the mist, but to not let him suffer a gruesome death from the unknown horror that was approaching their vehicle. And the fact that the unknown horror turned out to simply be the military coming to rescue them was just bitter.

Hey Ryan, sorry for asking- but have you considered doing an analysis on some of the Silent hill games? 2 has been a fan favorite obviously, but maybe there is potential to dig through and look into the others like in the later series, such as 4. I feel like there is a lot more behind what we are shown. Or there is a subtext behind Henry's character, like his detached nature to the whole ordeal and his social isolation- even to the point where we don't get to experience Henry first being locked away in his room, and how we are given text explaining who Henry is and his issues, kind alienating the player from fully connecting with the character. Maybe it could be a future project for you, but even if you don't follow through the Silent Hill route, I still can't wait to see your future videos. Have a good day!

Great analysis as always. One of the most terrifying idea of the film and much of King's films is the Biblical idea of the sin of the fathers being visited on the son and descendants. Even though the father is having an adulterous affair, the innocent wife and child suffer. So the death of the son is not a sacrifice so to speak but what is owed for the hero's sin. This is a trope that is stil present even in modern reality where folks will say things like, "God killed my son to teach me a lesson" etc.

I am a huge King fan and had loved the story when I first read it. I remember sitting with my mouth agape at the ending of the film because it was a. different than what I was expecting and b. so much better than what I was expecting. One of the only cases of the book and movie working together in harmony to create two distinct experiences that are both successful.

The story really is about hope and how we all have different views of what it means. David ultimately holds out as long as he can before he gives up hope at the worst possible time. akaDiluted it’s also the reason why the character for ‘Dale’ died so early on in the show. In the comics he lasts much longer, but due to Darabont essentially being kicked from the project, the actor’s loyalty to Darabont was stronger than staying with the show. I don’t blame him for choosing to leave tbh.

Trevor White The best thing about Stephen King is that The Mist is much smarter than just saying (religion is evil and stupid.) Yes. I despise the evil woman, of abusing her religion to spread more fear. BUT The Mist shows in fact evil, abuse of power and human fanatical desire to play gods with the world and other people. 1: Mother Carmody abusing her religion against others to get power, and we see how easily people breaking down and kill each other. (A religious human who played God.) 2: The American military ( in some vertions) created The Arrowhead Project, which slipped all the monsters into our world. It was not on purpose, but it was science that let them in. (Scientists who were playing gods.) Ultimately it depends on a chicken or the egg question. "Are people evil because religion is evil?" "Or is Religion evil because people are evil?" Stephen King replied that it is because WE humans are evil by nature, and will will not admit it and pushes it over on religion and politics. "As a species we're fundamentally insane tally. Put more than two of us in a room, we pick sides and start dreaming up reasons to kill each other :" Stephen King.

The thing that gets me honestly in these kinda movies, or the premise in general, is how almost no one as a whole agrees to try and help one another and instantly tries to more go for selfish needs. I know as a society that is probably what would end up happening after the initial bumrush and people getting trampled as others seek safety but it still makes me deeply sad, knowing that people really are like this.

Saw gets a lot of hate, but even if you don't like slasher/serial killer movies you've got to admit that the first one was really great, it didn't even have much gore and really was more of a murder Mystery, I mean sure as it went on the traps got more and more brutal and violent, and started reaching Gorno levels, but I still love the story. I get it you really only like movies for "smart" people that are full of symbology and have intricate plots, and in depth themes, which is fine, but I urge you to at least give the first film another chance. Haven't seen Hostel yet but my Brother has only said great things about it.

I actually love the first one, but as a fan, I was deeply frustrated with it's dramatically degenerated sequels. When James Wan and Leigh Whennell were attached for the first three, it was totally fine. But 4-7 are just shit. In terms of "smart", neh, that's nothing to do with it. It's pretty blatant when a film is just insulting your intelligence to exploit a gimmick at the expense of a good story.

See, Saw DOES have a really intricate plot though. I should know, I own all the movies and have seen them all several times (I have a tendency to make other people watch movies I like, which of course means watching them again myself). People just overlook that for some reason. I'm not saying it's a GOOD plot the whole way through, and they definitely shouldn't make more. But people who say it doesn't HAVE one are simply incorrect. Also the first one's REALLY good. The first three, I would argue, are good. It's a creative idea and I hate that the later films in the series took that away from them.

@@daoyang223 Yeah the movie was really great. One of the best adaptions of Stephen King's work. The ending is a little shocking, but it is still a good one. The book is really short (a novella) so I do recommend you read it before or after you watch the film. :)

This is one of the best movie endings ever. It's such a real human experience when faced with true hopelessness. I think it takes a life of experiencing hopelessness or desperation to appreciate the ending. If you've lived a happy life, whether in blissful ignorance, limited life experience, or just being fortunate to have minor issues, you'll never be able to relate or understand the ending

I think people are reading too much into the Mist and why it stopped. The reason it stopped was simple. A) The animals in the mist didnt go outside the mist. Ergo B) The mist came from the same place as the monsters. Therefor C) When the explosion happened and the portal was closed. Which happens in the first act. All the monsters on Earth in the mist were on borrowed time. The only thing the military did was to gun down dying monsters once the mist started retreating or dissipate because the atmospheres in both realms were pretty similar. Although, granted, if these gigantic insects were to live. They would need a much richer oxygen based atmosphere. The very reason insects today are much smaller overall compared to "dino" times. They wouldnt become as big as in the movie regardless though.
