Thanks for this " Eye-opener" Till now I was only seeing the romance through the eyes of the protagonist. Mine isn't a romance novel but thankfully after watching your earlier videos I decided to include a romance and I'm so thankful I did. I find the advice on whether the characters are aware of each other's internal conflict particularly helpful to develop the relationship further. Also, the suggestion about developing the character as individuals before introducing them is pure genius in my humble opinion---You sisters Rock!!!!!👏👏👏

How would one write a slow burn romance between rivals? I am currently experimenting with writing a sci fi narrative about a AG Pilot competing in an anti gravity racing league, and their love interest is a pilot from a rival anti gravity racing corporation.

@@YumnuP The themes of the story would be about political collusion and corporate greed, and the overall plot would be about this corrupt era of the sport and it's downfall Ag racing has essentially become a blood sport, with a notable plot point involving an incident in the year 2165 from an experimental 'super- missile' from one of the teams resulting in a cave-in on one of the tracks, resulting in the deaths of six pilots, including the protagonist's love interest

I was intending my protagonist to be young British woman who is a pilot for FEISAR (Federal European Industrial Science and Research - one of the anti gravity racing corporations) who falls in love with a rival pilot the antagonistic Russia-based Tigron team - a team that is morally bankrupt and deeply involved with the corruption within the race comission

Ross and Rachel are an awesome slow burn. Ross loves Rachel but doesn't have the confidence to ask her directly. They go with others, get jealous, break up, but always want each other underneath it all.

I, too, was so frustrated and disappointed with the last season. The Duke was absent for two episodes, and he's also sleeping with someone else. Where was this so-called 'slow burn'? There was nothing going between the two leads - writers failed miserably.

SPOILERS FOR ONE TREE HILL AND FRIENDS: Honestly, to me, the slow burn has had its time. It's now just frustrating instead of tantalising. Teasing a relationship in modern media has gotten to the point that it's just plain teasing. And no one likes to constantly be bullied by writers like that. In TV, if a relationship is teased longer than 1 season and nothing happens, I'm bored of it already. There are only a select few instances that I can think of where it works. It's the whole tired "will they, won't they" debacle. It's lazy. Like the writer can't think of any other intrigue apart from romantic tension. Give me obstacles the couple can face WHILE together! The best relationship I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing would be Hayley James and Nathan Scott from One Tree Hill. There is chemistry and teasing for maybe a quarter of the FIRST season before the payoff occurs. Then throughout the rest of the other NINE SEASONS they remain together. They have many ups and downs (some very, VERY big downs), but they deal with it and become stronger for it. To me, the relationship between two characters will always be the more interesting plot versus the teasing of a potential relationship. The only instance where, imo, slow burn works, is if they're enemies to lovers, or the couple builds a platonic friendship first (Monica x Chandler - never felt like teasing despite they're chemistry as friends, but it didn't feel out of place when they got together either. And that was because of the earlier platonic, chemistry-ridden friendship).
