This is just one example of why Barbra Streisand is a historical as well as artistic figure. When her life is reflected upon in future generations, her legacy will be valued, her contribution to society will be respected and her artistic accomplishments will be a blueprint for other artists to learn and grow from. Because we're living in the same timeframe as Barbra we're not really aware of this. But future generations will look upon her as one of the greats. She is one of the greats. She is, in that sense, immortal.

Even today, this speech still holds true. Thank you for sharing the full speech for us all. Not only is she a brilliant speaker, but also a caring, intelligent, and thoughtful citizen. And even though she's in her early 50s at the time of this speech, she's so beautiful! Radiant.

Reply to Turandot's "Even though she's in her early 50s, she's still so beautiful." (How Common). And we may imagine Ms Streisand's dismay and disgust regarding the AGISM blaring from your off-key aria ( "feed your head").

@@lenorefoxmoor9985 You know, I really didn’t mean it in the way you interpreted it. Certainly, I didn’t expect anyone to take umbrage, so aggressively, with what was meant to be a sincere compliment to the greatest star. Even so, I can see how my original comment can seem ageist. But that wasn’t my intention. What I meant was Barbra has ALWAYS looked younger than her years and has always been beautiful - appearance has always been a preoccupation with her. Furthermore, being an actress, we know how the world, and Hollywood, regards women of a certain age. My comment was simply to say that Barbra Streisand defies all of that. Streisand has an indescribable, timeless beauty, in my humble opinion. That’s all.

Just finished reading Chapter Fifty-Two The Artist as Citizen from My name is Barbra. At the end of each chapter I will listen to or watch the correlating topic being a movie, an album or TV Spot or TV Show. It has been very fun to experience what I already know of her to be embellished by the testimony of her autobiography. Watching this speech and Q&A for the first time after reading of the experience she had was enthralling. I appreciated how nervous she was. It is so easy to see Barbra Streisand as this big Star. So talented, intelligent engaging and beautiful. Yet human enough to be nervous just speaking her mind. Despite her un-comfort Barbra is an excellent speaker and a great inspiration.

@JJ/ I was thinking something similar here- although she thinks her left side is better- the right side is beautiful as well. It was interesting to see her from that angle. We're so used to seeing her from the left that it's like discovering a whole new person from the right. I think perhaps she's being too critical of herself. Maybe we're all a little bit like that.

Distilled down to its essence, her basic point is that, just because she is an artist or from "Hollywood", it doesn't mean she is not just as much a citizen as anyone else with the same right to speak out and express her opinion. That's it and that's what she is doing here. Period.
@dr.calebrobbins.31772 жыл бұрын
It is interesting to observe how far we as a global community have come on some of the issues discussed here ... much has changed for the better some have become entrenched and grown thus harder to contain. This talk was obviously done in a pre 9/11 World. The World in many ways has become a better place in which to live - but at a hefty price. Progress is never linear. What stands out for me listening being Human Nature is a constant - there will always be people like Streisand who care about the future of the Human race not just the here and now ... This suggests that the Artist has a valuable role in Society ... through their work they bring our focus on Tomorrow the Political being the manager caretaker if you will of the immediate and short term. The former ensuring we keep the latter accountable in their strategies for management. Yet we often mistake and overlook the value Artists have in our communities.

I am surprised how aggressive some in the audience were during the questions, it recalled a scene with Katy Morosky in THE WAY WE WERE. I would ask why are tickets so expensive not only to concerts, but also to Broadway shows, museums. Should the government sponsor a free day or a discount day at such events so low income families can participate in art.

Few would disagree that Barbra Streisand is an insanely gifted performer and all around highly intelligent person, but we as humans form our ideologies, opinions, and outlooks on the lives we lead, and on our physical environments as well as on the company we keep. In short, for her entire adult life, Barbra has led one of the most sheltered and isolated lives of any celebrity on the planet Earth. Based on that alone, Streisand is completely unqualified to judge, let alone legislate how any ordinary American citizen should live their lives.
@patricedecourcy45053 жыл бұрын
How many days a year you spend in her presence, talking to her and watching her talking to others? Basically you judge her (knowing really nothing about her) yet you say she is unqualified to judge others because she doesn't know them. Funny.
@snarkyenigma92193 жыл бұрын
@@patricedecourcy4505 Barbra's isolated life is very well documented, but if you want to believe that she's standing in line at Ralphs bitching about rising food costs, or concerned about the cost of gasoline as she pumps her gas at Costco, or is worrying about crime rising in her mountain top neighborhood overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Malibu ... um, OK. Yes, Babs is an expert in life in America for 400 million people.
@patricedecourcy45053 жыл бұрын
@@snarkyenigma9219 Very well documented? By whom? She's always been trying to stay out of sight. For sure she is isolated but also she is surrounded by so called normal people, e.g. her assistants. And she's been always a very curious person. Anyway - you are not an expert in life in America for 400 million people. Nor is she. Most people who in your opinion "know life better" don't read books, articles, and are rather narrow minded.
