In this video I share some thoughts on how our egos are essential if we want to produce art of any sort, because they will help us to back ourselves in the face of criticism; but we also need to be aware of the ego's negative impulse to make us feel separate and superior to everyone else, because it can get us off track from making beautiful things.
Share this video on if you found it helpful.

Actually all time when discussion about art making starts, I mean deep conversation about such things like in this video , it is possible to substitute word "artist" with "human being", "art-making" with "living" and all other words will stay relevant.

Sean, I am 65 and have just started to get back into my photography. I have watched many videos, from many different people, on different photography subjects. But I must say, your videos are very informative, straight talking. I have learnt more from your videos than any others, you have inspired me so much. Don't ever change the way you work, or present your work. Stay true to yourself. You are an inspiration to others. Thanks. David.

8:30 "I want people to think I'm successful..." What you then go on to describe is financial "success", and say that you're not a successful photographer. But Sean, you *are* - your work speaks your truth, you are willing to share both your work and your truth with the world, come what may, and you keep shooting even when you doubt yourself. Those things, to me, describe true "success" - the rest is icing. IMO

Thank you for presenting such a healthy perspective of how ego can serve us in a nontoxic way. I think you would make a wonderful psychoanalyst! Being an Episcopal/Anglican priest with a passion for photography, I connected immediately with your comments on the work of Richard Rohr, one of my favorite writers on spirituality. Your honesty is a breath of fresh air, and your articulated thoughts are spot on. I continue to enjoy your videos both for their photographic content, and also for the depth of content those of us on the photographic journey, the inner photographic journey, can relate to. 🙏🏽

I started watching your Videos almost a Year ago. During this time I've found myself in your words somehow. Especially this film about our egos. Your words were as sharp as a knife. Unfortunately, I suffer from a variety of mental illnesses which drive me to almost everything. Showing off and living behind a facade is what I'm, unfortunately, understand too good. I just can't describe how thought provoking your metaphors are. Having this kind of self-awareness like you've been talking about is an important aim to accomplish. However, I want to cut it off right now. Thank you so much for being such a precious individual for me and so many others.

Another life lesson, thank you Mr.Tucker🙏🏾🙏🏾 . Because of your channel and the mind, heart and soul photography lessons you teach us I now fallen back in love with photography, let me explain, I was taking photo but just for the sake of it, I also do weddings, parties, corporate & product. Now because of your previous video I’m now delving into portraiture, I also mostly have my camera with me and I limit myself to just one prime lens. Sometimes, most of the time I get no worthy photos but I have to say at this point I’m my own worst critic!! But this part of me is changing due to your content, weather people like my photos or not I’m going to stand by what I’ve done and listen and here the criticism good or bad.

Amazing video. I appreciate your clarity, honesty and sensitivity. Stay the course, and keep it up, Tucker-San. I’m not even a photographer, just a guy who sometimes takes pictures. You are your choices. “

Thank you very much for this video. This was beautiful. I am a singer and searched this video because I was watching a documentary on David Ruffin. I am concerned or curious on how to balance the way I see my art and realized that everybody that exists has this dilemma and to not shame myself when my ego might peak its head out of line. It’s okay, but we must practice the muscle everyday. It’s a conscious choice. And honestly I enjoy this life. It’s fun it’s full of gambles and changes all of the time.

Very well articulated and simplified Sean, and perhaps it's the difference between being 'Self-Centered' (confident and humble) and 'Selfish' that differentiates between those who truly great artists and those who hack success and often fail. Having grown up around the Hollywood movie business and worked in media I can say that not many people who had not transcended their 'ID' or who developed a selfish, toxic ego remained successful or happy for long, for the reasons you just presented. Blaise Pascal noted: “All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” And when it comes to 'Balancing' ego perhaps it is the awareness of ego that is the key as Jung, some of the great classical philosophers and biblical profits point out, and discovering how to sit still until all the emotional induced chatter of the mind subsides enough until one is left with only one's deepest fears, angers and ego to confront is what can free us best us from the delusion of unhealthy ego.
