Thank you for this, Jon. I love how Pastor Jerry said revival is happening in his church under the ordinary means of grace, I have always said what happened at GLC when James went to jail was a type of revival. I don’t think I have seen the power of God on display like I did during those months - we saw so many getting saved, renewed zeal for holiness, people not wanting to leave our Sunday services, changes in homes and families, and even an overturn of government leadership. So many (who are actually supporting this revival) mocked us as just wanting attention or having a rebellious spirit but the preaching Christ was central and the gospel went out to millions. I was afraid that so many would fall away, it was a time of heightened emotion but the last 2 years have showed us it was a true work of God and our church only continues to flourish. The testimonies are all the same for the Canadian churches that remained opened.

This is probably the most encouraging thing I've read all week. It's disappointing coming to the conclusion that something that is so needed is in fact not actually happening. It's a good reminder that God most often uses the small and weak, not the sensational and big.

@@sharonh.harris1924 respectfully, I think you misread Kate's comment before you decided to correct her. To pray that the adults are convicted is definitively calling on God the Holy Spirit to do what he does best. She's not putting it on the adults as you suggested. God uses people, in this case "adults" to shepherd his flock. This is a biblical prayer and we should say amen.
@jesusisrisen1202
@jesusisrisen1202 Жыл бұрын
@@sharonh.harris1924 I believe you’re misconstruing the comment. God uses mature older believers, specifically elders/pastors, to oversee, shepherd and supervise younger believers in the faith. It’s very biblical to pray towards that end. Nowhere in scripture does God normally permit young believers to go unsupervised by older, more mature believers. Furthermore, your comment insinuates a false dichotomy between the Holy Spirit and spirit-filled, mature older believers (I.e., adults). The Holy Spirit works through older, wiser believers to help guide and mentor younger believers in the faith. That should be a normative practice in a biblically healthy Church.

5 principles of a true revival, from Martyn Lloyd-Jones: 1. There is a recognition of spiritual bankruptcy. 2. The gospel is central to it. 3. It is the work of the Holy Spirit, not human ingenuity. 4. It is a result of prayer. 5. It leads to holiness and obedience.

As a former charismatic I know that when we went away for weekends where we are locked away from the world, with preaching, singing, praying, and fellowship, it's not the real world. We can feel that we've been healed of various things, and feel on fire for God, but the test is going back into the real world, and to find what lasts in everyday life. The thing is none of that changed any of us, it's a break from normal life, but it's not revival. Finding victory in the hard times, and being able to praise God and drawing near to Him regardless of the storms around us, is the way to grow in the faith. To watch God's providence working in and around us, is what excites me. The other is just nice. The Holy Spirit is with us everyday, working in us. We Don't need to travel to get that.

This was so helpful; thank you. I get the impression from what you shared that this "revival" is just the religious arm of our woke culture. The Heidelberg clearly differentiates between sin and misery - sin as rebellion against a holy God that results in misery. It seems that many want deliverance from misery without conviction of sin. Anyone can claim to be a victim of misery - The devil doesn't mind us being delivered from misery as long as it doesn't lead to deliverance from sin and his tyranny over us.

Sin is not loving God or loving your neighbor. That’s Sin! God gave us the Commandments to show us how to love! If you don’t understand this you do not understand the Spirit of the law, which most of the Israelites failed to do.
@designbuild7128
@designbuild7128 Жыл бұрын
@@DayDreamer-LB While what you said is true, it seems there is more that Lauren is saying. The problem is that no one can keep the law or love as commanded. And not doing God's commands is a sign of not loving Him (sin entered the world from a fairly innocuous event- eating from a tree- from a human perspective, but not God's). We are called to be holy and perfect as the Father is, yet fall short; hence the need for conviction, confession, and accepting Christ and His work. True revival is a corporate version of what needs to happen to each one of us individually, hopefully allowing for the shaping of church and culture in God's way and with humility realizing what God did for us through salvation. But, in addition, many people look for salvation (from misery, consequences, or situation) without fully accepting His whole law, accepting His desire to recommune with us, or accepting God's provision Christ has provided against judgment and to eternal life. We don't just get along or get by as our preeminent goal. God is not a genie in a bottle to complement our volition; we must come to Him on His terms since He is our creator, all just, and all knowing.

Oh the Heidelberg. Yes. Some misery was caused at that time, by Christians, against other Christians. Particularly over differences of agreement about what sin was exactly, and how the remedy worked, and admittedly those are good questions. Please read some more, about the Reformation, about Christian Church history, about war, about poverty, about "misery," a subject toward which Jesus is not silent, and rephrase that comment. You don't want to go to your grave with that in the ether.

@@designbuild7128 John 6:29 The only work God requires of us to do is to believe in the one he sent. Romans 7:6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code. When you serve in the new way of the Spirit you become a slave to God which leads to holiness. Read more on it in Romans 6:15-23 and Romans 7:4-6. The Gospel is not about the law the Gospel is about love, mercy and forgiveness! Once you understand this you begin to serve God in the new way of the Spirit which will lead you to the control of Righteousness which is a natural outcome from this understanding! May the Spirit of Gods Grace be with you. I think it’s good for everyone, to read every passage on grace! It is something a lot of people and Pastors do not understand but I believe God is bringing it into a better understanding; because scripture says we will all be taught by God and it also says it is Gods will then none will be lost. Thy will be done God! Ephesians 2:4-5 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions - it is by grace you have been saved. Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is a gift from God - not by works, so that no one boast.

How do you know each heart? How do you know if it was "dead and stays dead"? How did you determine that? Who set you up as the judge of what happened to every young person who ever went to camps/conferences? That is very arrogant although I'm sure the Holy Spirit has revealed that to you by now. Remember, we don't know each OTHER person, only ourselves. So allow the Holy Spirit, and give Him the dignity, to know each person and their heart and to direct and educate and train them as He did YOU. You didn't come into this world knowing everything about God and the Holy Spirit has taught you. So allow Him the freedom to have done it with those who attended "youth camps/conferences". He can blow on the flame in their hearts, and yours, whenever He wants and you never know when it will catch flame. Has He blown on your heart today?

Here at Columbia International University, we are having a day of prayer. Thus far the worship music is biblically based, and Scriptures were read by various students. I accidentally came early and watched the worship team rehearse and then went up to the staff to pray for them and ask the Lord to bring revival and HIS Spirit upon the university. I'm a 1996 graduate of the university with an MA in Teaching English as a Second Language and Intercultural Studies. This was such a timely episode for me. I was just with a group and one thing I was concerned with is that they seemed to embrace the "gospel of trauma". So emphasis was placed on, "I did this because of what happened to me at age 9." Rather than, I sinned. I needed to confess and repent and accept the blood of Jesus, to remove that sin from my life. THEN, by the process of sanctification and being transformed by the renewing of our minds, we can explore some of the past experiences that may be leading us into sin patterns. But unless we acknowledge our sin and repent of it, no amount of "healing prayer" is going to give us victory over strongholds.

Also: 2 Timothy 3:15-17 (KJV 1900): And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. Last Sunday morning, Alisa Childers went, and she said there were about 20 people there. She has done 2 videos on her experience and her view, which is very similar to yours. She spoke about the wheat and the tares and said time would tell. She also said there was no gospel message as well and encouraged the viewing of the initial message as the gospel wasn't preached. Personally, I wouldn't run to any event like this as I know I can repent in my home, trun from my sin from the conviction of the Holy Spirit here where I'm at. Unfortunately, the young girl who gave her testimony of her time at kona( a highly bethel influenced campus) she did not mention conviction from Holy Spirit or the need to repent. I was in a charismatic church for 16 years and barely ever did they give the gospel message that you need Jesus and to repent of your sins. They always encouraged the laying on of hand of anyone. I won't allow that now that I've left there as you don't know who the person is. I don't want to be critical of the possibility that this is God moving, but I don't understand the hype around revival in the charismatic church. I honestly didn't know biblically what it meant until this week. Charismatic folk don't want to miss out on the feelings and seem to run to this kinda thing. Now Bethel is copying Asbury and that really concerns me. After so many years of false teaching in my church as the leadership worshipped Bill J and Chris V , I'm very much a skeptic. I am so cautious now after all I've experienced. Our church also idolized Todd Bentley and I remember the day it was revealed he was in sin.... it was a huge deal as they had to bring in another pastor from Victoria BC to tell us. I always knew he was crooked but you couldn't any anything to anyone. I'm in Canada and I wouldn't be surprised at all if people have flown there from here. I onow someone who flew to bethel this week because they are claiming revival has broken out there now too.

I think that wherever true believers are gathered together to worship it is "the church", the "body of Christ", and Jesus is in their midst, especially considering the vast apostasy among today's "established" churches. It is very hard to find a doctinally-sound church anymore. John Wesley was not allowed to preach in the Anglican Church of his time and had to go out and preach in the public square, like Jesus did. Certainly there are many true believers in the Asbury gathering and we should pray for a true move of God all over the US, not just in Asbury.

I remember when I was a teenager (about 16) going to "aquire the fire" with my youth group. It was very emotion based. This reminds me of that based on what I've seen. While I was bent down on my knees praying someone came up and laid their hands on me and prayed for me. I literally felt a weight come off my shoulders. I thought it was God removing my burderns. She prayed for me over "the spirit if suicide" as well. I was not suicidal. However my mothers death was a ruled a suicide when I was a child (although there is skepticism over the ruling of that). My ex-husband committed suicide last year, and a guy I dated in my past also committed suicide. I think there is some kind of spirit present at these events, but I dont believe its a Holy spirit revival. I believe there is a false spirit present. Everyone who went changed for about 3 weeks and then our lives went back to normal. Nobody really had a repentant heart, nobody really made any permanent changes, the gospel wasnt preached. I know this about the others because most went to my school and we saw eachother every day. The others were friends who kept in close contact. It FELT powerful and amazing, 100%. I understand the emotional and mental draw to these things but I believe they are false. There is a temporary change, but its not life long. At least with what I've seen and experienced myself. It is a very powerful feeling going to these things, but it typically doesnt last. You dont need a revival to change and feel the Holy Spirit move. You need to consistently hear Gods word, read Gods word, repent and pray. I am thankful the Lord has worked in my mind, heart, and life as He has by His word and faithful pastors preaching. I am now at 39 a truly changedf person, with a repentant heart, who loves the Lord and wants nothing more than to follow His instructions given in His word.

Familiar spirits are real -- fortune tellers, witches, and those into all sorts of darkness tap into them, and it sounds like this lady was moving with one. Or, it could be that the Holy Spirit led her to pray against "the spirit of suicide" without any in particular motive on her part and she just did it. I know there are times in my life I'll just say something in the course of a group discussion and BOOM! it was something someone in the group was dealing with. (e.g., A woman in the group's son was murdered and she, of course, was dealing with unforgiveness -- who could blame her?! But I had no idea she was going through that, and I made a comment about a recent murder event and that forgiveness on that level of wound can take years to work through.) "The Old Testament was just the first 16 years of my life. It was just hopeless wandering. The Old Testament is just wandering. God is far from his people." True revival is all about repentance of sin and the Gospel and the Word of God. Anytime someone rejects God's word, does not want to obey God's commandments but instead wants an emotional experience, that is false revival. I like what Alissa Childers said. Imagine if Bibles were outlawed and destroyed, and people heard of a Bible being found and being read out loud. How many would travel far and wide to hear that? Because that truly is God speaking and we have that now but many reject that and want something new and exciting.

Hell is not pleasant to think about, but it's real, and a loving Christian will tell people that it is a terrifying reality to fall into the wrath of a Living God. I understand being hopeful for what is happening but from what I've watched it doesn't seem like much more than a revival themed party.. sorry, just my opinion. There is true revival taking place and it's happening in the quiet places. The Lord is building up a legion of saints, mostly common people, who are being built up to withstand the persecution that is already here and coming in increasing measure. Some of the chief persecutors of these saints will be false Christians. This false revival receives all the press while behind the scenes Christ continues to build His church.

Excellent as always Jon, coming from a charismatic and deeply arminian background just know that emotionalism is the bread and butter of these kinds of events. I've been to more of these types of events as a young person than I care to have and looking back there is always a big element of emotionalism from either the presenter or the people participating and that is how arminians roll and then you add the elements of a somewhat progressive flavor in the academic part of the school and there is no revival here. I believe Spencer Smith already reported that they had a session where demons were being cast out a few days ago so it sounds like the charismatics have attempted to hijack it from the school.

God must be pulling his hair, that we are even having a discussion about whether the activity in the Kentucky church is a "real," revival. So if we determine it is not a revival, what is it? And if not a revival, but some other spiritual experience, what difference does it make? Bottom line: If we can rule out a Satanic experience, please let's refrain from labels. Thank God, that God is omniscient, otherwise we could never be saved, precisely because of the constant scrutiny of EVERYTHING. This discussion is SO disappointing. I don't think it should be called a revival during the moment. It's simply a 24/7 worship service. I deal with that in my hour long analysis video that I released yesterday, along with talk about revivals in general. I would definitely like to see more preaching. If the "gospel" is being preached the way that Pastor Keeler described, that is definitely a problem. They need a true gospel preached (Sin, Hell, Damnation, Atonement of Christ, Resurrection, Forgiveness through Faith in Christ). The test will be based on what kind of lasting fruit comes of it. I'm also hearing reports now of security concerns as troublemakers are coming. You are bound to get some "bad actors" on campus with that many people. Someone who knows a professor said that people are getting bused in and causing problems. I guess we'll start hearing about it if it becomes bad. We can definitely pray that it doesn't!

I am sure this Pastor knows the Gospel of Grace and has preached on it many times! I guarantee you, most Methodists know we are saved by Grace and not the law or it would not be grace. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God- not the result of works, so that no one may boast. You brothers need to work out a biblical theology of "the flesh" -- sinful passions and desires "are no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me." Entertaining those desires, acting upon them, or not actively warring against them in the Spirit constitutes a committed sin, but the struggle with the flesh is not itself sinful, even though it is proper to confess and repent of evil desires when they are experienced. The flesh *is* an affliction, including same-sex desires. Those desires are evil, and to make any peace with them at all is evil, but the mere fact of being inclined through the dead fallen flesh toward a particular set of sins is not itself a sin. All of which is to say: Asbury and its goings-on aside, the first woman's testimony was, in its actual content, a testimony to God's power to free His people from the bondage of their sin; and the fact that she didn't specifically mention Christ (focusing instead upon the Father, as does the vast majority of the Bible), and that she shared something related to her sanctification instead of her justification, is not remotely objectionable. I only watched twelve minutes of this video, but thus far it seems like you're nitpicking something essentially good, encouraging, and God-glorifying because it doesn't fit with a doctrinaire bullet point list of what a person's "testimony" ought to be (i.e., a bullet point list of facts about forensic imputation).

I don't believe there is a revival just because of Jesus words: love will grow cold, people will fall away from faith (not come to it), and when Jesus comes back, will He even find faith at all? There is no word of revivals in the end times. Surely His chosen people all over the world will come to faith as the Gospel is being preached....yet not as a movement of many people.

Obviously none of you were there when it started. And you are making comments from later on. And none of you have really experienced God's falling. And by the way many did say they had been saved from sin. You are looking for a normal service. All of the students have been taught about the Bible, etc. Revival is done by GOD. I think this conversation wants to vivify this. Remember God sees you too!

In answer to Jon's question if those present on Saturday evening were encouraged to be at their respective churches on Sunday, I saw a comment on Alisa Childers' video that the reason Alisa found so few people at Hughes is that they were worshipping in their churches. I'm only commenting in fairness and not to defend what is happening at Asbury. I pray that God is starting revival in His people everywhere so that those outside of the kingdom will see His power as we repent of sin and He restores to fellowship with Himself and each other.

Hey - cool - Jerry was a tongues-dude as well! Good job, guys. Every, single time - and I've seen around 3 or 4 of these - it's the same old thing. "I think this time it's real!" "No way - couldn't be." Or: "We should exercise cautions." "Judgmental!" All I've been saying is that IF it's genuine, then genuine, biblical reforms will happen as a result, and people will start obeying all of God's Word. I told this to a friend, way back in 1991, when he asked why I was concerned about the latest thing. I said "Just ask what kind of Christians - what kind of disciples - are produced as a result." If this is genuine, then as an institution Asbury will cease and desist, as official doctrinal and teaching positions, on at least two levels: *No more support of 'side 'B' homosexuality, and *No more women holding pastoral office. Just those two reformations would go extremely far in assuring us that this is a 'real' move-a move of the same Spirit that inspired the texts that prohibit that which Asbury currently teaches. Compared with the ordinary (occurs 52 weeks a year at least) means of grace that God has given - and perhaps that's why these events erupt every 8 years or so: The regular Sunday assembly is vapid and weak itself. Could be...

No, absolutely not. These pastors are men with no special insight on truth. They are fallible just as we all are. We rely too heavily on pastors for truth. Read and study scripture and pray. Compare your knowledge of scripture with your pastor's. Pastors have a very important role, but relying on them for truth, has resulted in the Prosperity gospel and Word of Faith gospel being accepted by millions of Christians. Go to the truth giver, the Holy Spirit, for truth.

@@sheilasmith7779 No one is suggesting we should "rely" on pastor's for the truth. And no one is suggesting they are not fallible, but to not discuss this event with one's own pastor or elder is foolish. A dialogue needs to occur. Remember, "as iron sharpens iron."

@@fandude7 Why is it foolish not to discuss but wise to discuss with one's pastor? What is it you hope to learn on this event from your pastor? Are you uncertain in the reliability of YOUR eyes, ears, mind combined with H.S guidance? Does your pastor have some quality in THIS matter that you lack? Pastors are necessary for us, but not in all matters. Perhaps we might wait before deciding the meaning of the Ashbury event. Perhaps, for some, more information is needed. Fair enough. But we should be careful not to develop a co-dependent relationship with our pastor. And we should be careful not to rely only on ourselves. Trust God.

@@sheilasmith7779 Proverbs 15:22 says, "plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed." Proverbs 11:14 says, "where there is no counsel, the people fall." This very warning from Scripture is why we should consult others, in this case one's pastor AND elders. I noticed you're not including elders in your replies. No one is saying pastors are necessary in ALL things - you're including that. You have not provided a good reason why to not bring this to the attention of a pastor AND elders (see Scripture quotes above). Also no one is saying to develop a 'co-dependent' relationship with a pastor, no one. Yes, all of us should read and study Scripture on our own, but it is a wise effort to discuss and dialogue with others on such matters - whether Biblical or events such as Asbury. Asbury is too soon to tell what it is.

the reason why we don't want to come off as stuffy & skeptical & critical is that there ARE so many false teachings out there that we wish we didn't have to expose & preach against!! I’m confused by the examples pastors are giving of ‘revival’ in the Bible while saying that revival is a renewal of Christians. Jonah was not preaching to Christians, no? Nor were those in Acts 19, they were being saved also. So how are these examples of revival when they weren’t saved to begin with? I also heard someone use Hezekiah and Josiah who when they heard the Law, were convicted and repented and reconciled to God and finally worshiped. Seems these would be regeneration, not revival.

In the spring of 1995, something like this happened, I think it started at a Texas university. I was at Moody and it spread there. There was the confession of sin, less singing. I think it was especially big at Wheaton with many people repenting. I'm not sure what the long-term results of that event were.

Finally I get confirmation of what I suspected. It's another "Toronto Blessing". I think it could still be turned around but it would be very uncomfortable for everyone to be confronted with sin at this point. Revival, in my mind, would be a mirror to look directly at my sin..and it would be painful. I'd be doubled over rather than jumping around to music.

The fruit does not come from repentance it comes from the Holy Spirit! When you believe God loves you so much that he wanted you to know, he will forgive all your sins.
