As usual, such an great episode. Also, that was probably one of my favorite fan art videos so far. There was fantastic art (as always), hilarious pictures, amazing cosplays, great music playing for it... Oh and a picture I was waiting for most, a Granny Trell performance picture haha. Darts are a monk weapon so you can use your martial arts die, it's for both unarmed strikes or monk weapons. At lower levels you just tend to use it for only unarmed strikes cause the weapons damage die is normally higher.

"At 1st level, your practice of martial arts gives you mastery of combat styles that use unarmed strikes and monk weapons, which are shortswords and any simple melee weapons that don't have the two-handed or heavy property" Unfortunately darts aren't simple melee weapons, they're simple ranged weapons, and therefore don't count as a monk weapon. Daggers however do count as a simple melee weapon, so even if she throws them they would count as a monk weapon and therefore do damage based on the martial arts table. If I were DMing though, I would house rule that shuriken are monk weapons.

It just doesn't make sense that they would give you a weapon that wasn't considered a monk weapon as part of your starting gear, but yes technically it's not raw a monk weapon. As good of a job that wotc did on 5e, I find some of they're decisions hard to justify to myself let alone my players. I have house ruled on several aspects of the phb to make the game more fun for not only my players but myself as well. Especially some of the parts they brush off as fluff but could really make the difference to a players enjoyment and getting to realize the character concept they were envisioning when they sat down to play d&d. I understand the need for a core set of basic rules but when they get in the way of me and my group having fun I won't think twice about chucking that shit out of my game and homebrewing my own variations.

oh I agree, within reason of course. If something doesn't make sense or if it fits a character concept better, it should be house ruled as long as it's not something absolutely ridiculous or game breaking. I'd even go so far as to house rule that a monk starts with shuriken or even senbon (the needles some characters in Naruto use) rather than darts. I'd still use the stats for a dart, but allow them to count as a monk weapon and in the case of senbon possibly allow them to be used as a less effective healing kit since they are medical/acupuncture needles (Stabilization only as they could be used to restrict blood flow to critical wounds or something). I was just trying to explain why Mark said they weren't monk weapons and apparently he doesn't house rule them the same way either of us would.
