This is the first time I'm hearing about this as well and it makes no sense. Astro Bot is owned by Sony, it's under the "Playstation studios" label and it's made by Team Asobi (owned by Sony, it's officially a first party Playstation studio) and it's published by Sony. It's Playstation 5 exclusive and it should remain Playstation 5 exclusive. Competition is healthy. I don't expect Nintendo to start porting Mario over to other consoles or PC (Nintendo shouldn't be doing) and Sony shouldn't be doing that with Astro Bot (Astro Bot shouldn't be put on Nintendo and Xbox) and frankly they need to STOP putting their games on PC (I know they only do that for some of their games, not all of their games, but they need to put a complete stop to that). Astro Bot is Playstation 5 exclusive and it should remain that way, just like Nintendo games like Mario Odyssey are Nintendo Switch exclusive and it should remain that way. Exclusives create healthy competition.

No upside to gamers, only for the higher ups that own the platform. Not even for the devs that are third party but make exclusive games for a certain system, it has been a regret to them(final fantasy devs for example). I think all games should be able to be played wherever you want to play, in a legitimate way of course. Playstation games going to PC is a great move, especially for gamers who have invested thousands for their rig and dont or not forced to buy a weaker hardware and play the game they WANT to play it, its also a win for Sony as they make more sales for the games they make.. Literally no one is losing by having games be able to be played anywhere.. Im really shocked CONSUMERS are DEFENDING multibillion dollar companies at ANTI-CONSUMERISM, please stop this, it hurts no one but you as a consumer.

That's a big reason why I mostly stopped watching reviews. They're just not fun anymore. Very few creators care about nuance or objectivity. I'm all for keeping Astro Bot a PS exclusive. That's how it should be. You don't have a healthy gaming market without exclusives. Just look at the state of Xbox. I haven't bought one because I can get everything on it somewhere else. You don't have competition without exclusivity.

Exclusivity is expensive though, it's why there's been so very little this generation. Astro Bot is a budget game, so Sony got away with it. And hopefully they'll do more considering how much of a bomb Concord was.

Just look at the industry as a whole. How many thousands of lay offs the last few years. How many studios shut down. The amount games cost these days studio's need as many people as possible to buy their game. Exclusivity is killing the gaming industry. There is a reason square is going multiplat. They can't survive being playstation Exclusive.

I see Astro as less a ripoff/copy of Mario, and more a spiritual successor. Yeah some ideas are similar, but the way Astro tweaks themes are nuanced enough to feel unique. Nintendo fans just want to treat the company like God that nobody can take inspiration from, and Xbox fans are just salty they don’t have an exclusive game that has as high of a metacritic score. A lot of the time they just seem to champion Xbox as the best developer with games from their studios so good they have to be on PlayStation for that brand to have any sort of relevance. It’s really strange.

I think the argument can be made about the hypocrisy of the overall media in regard to exclusives. On one hand you have the media fighting very hard Xbox in stopping them making games exclusives and they massively cave and on the other hand you will have those same medias celebrate that great new exclusive Astro bot. I have no idea about the drama specifically about Astro bot cause the game is absolutely amazing but I will agree with the complete ridiculous hypocrisy by media. Idk why people are saying there’s no drama, I see it on Twitter, KZbin, Twitch. As far as console wars, I honestly don’t mind as long as it encourages companies to improve for US as gamers. However, I draw the line at disrespect, harassment, and taking things to a personal level. I do think it can be fun and even hilarious, but c’mon now, it’s not that serious. With that said, so many fanboys are in straight denial. We should be glad that we have a platformer with this level of polish and budget behind it. This could spawn even more! But yeah, you speak common sense, all game developers feed off each other and it’s okay for games to be inspired by each other. And agreed no platform is perfect, and we can criticize them, but we should be embracing each other, not tearing each other down. Look, I’m a « PlayStation guy » simply because, mainly because I play the most on my PS5, although I love to enjoyed my Switch when on business trip and some exclusive title on my Series S. I have seen console war from the beginning of this generation (2020), for most part it’s really funny from both PlayStation fanboys (Sony Pony) and Xbox Fanboys (Xbot). But lately, Xbox fanboys are becoming really delusional and deceptive. They will go out and tell you Astro Bot is flopping because Sony’s action dropped by 0,005% in a random day made up story around it. Always owned every console, can completely understand people that can't afford every machine though, each offer different things whatever you choose. Fanboys are the worst, I love the options and games we have across all platforms and how we choose to consume them. Astrobot is a Fantastic game and highlights how strong playstation ips are, they just know how to make good games, so many that I have enjoyed and loved over the years. Xbox and gamepass is probably the best way to consume games on a budget with a good line up of games dropping on the service I personally can't wait for gears e day and wouldn't be able to cope without my next halo fix. Nintendo speaks for itself with so many beloved franchises and staples like Zelda and mario which I always look forward to playing. Regarding platformers we should be encouraged by how good astobot is as it will hopefully lead to more platformers coming out across all consoles.

If you want the real drama, head over to the PSVR2 groups and see how angry they are that this isn't coming to VR. There's a lot of people outright refusing to buy it despite the fact that bringing Astrobot to a larger audience, may well increase the odds of a new VR game or a new port or the original. I honestly think the people you mention trashing the game don't believe a word that they're actually saying. It's just all there to provoke a reaction and nothing more. Just ignore it and they'll start bitching about something else.

My only problem with Astro Bot isn’t that it’s a Mario clone. I just don’t care for the fact that the entire character and game is a giant Sony advert. While some may find it charming to appeal to Sony’s gaming history, I find it to be a hollow marketing ploy that eschews any real personality for the Astro Bot character. It’s just so… corporate. PS. I have all three consoles and have zero brand allegiance.

I would agree with you if the inclusions were only modern PlayStation things, but it seems to be mostly older PlayStation related stuff that they don’t even sell anymore so it does feel like more of a celebration than a marketing technique.

This proves you didn’t play a lick of it. The whole “Mario clone” thing kinda goes out the window after the first few levels. It plays nothing like it, you’re acting like Mario can be the only 3d platformer around. Not to mention, corporate? How the fuck does it feel corporate? There is so much detail and care put into it that nothing “Corporate” could achieve. This game was made by people who loved and grew up with the game series in it. I feel like you’re making up reasons to dislike it

@@WandaKendrick-uy3iu If you really read my comment, you would have seen that I said I don’t have a problem with it being a Mario clone. That’s what the criticism of this video was about. I personally feel it borrows mechanisms from a wide number of games, and that’s all well and good. Because the gameplay is excellent. But the flying PS5 consoles and DualSense are very much corporate in my eyes - there’s no two ways about it. It’s a world entirely built around Sony properties, and it IS a big Sony ad. Whether one has a problem with it or not is up to everyone’s own opinion. The vast majority doesn’t mind. I personally do. It’s still a great game. So relax.

I don't really agree with either of your points to be honest. It's 100% okay to criticize a game for being exclusive. Platform exclusives are extremely outdated and one of the worst anti consumer practices still widely being performed. Both xbox and sony have been doing better at putting their games on PC, but that's not always affordable for most people. Having an industry where you don't have to drop $600 on a whole new console just to play one game you're interested in is better for everyone. Criticizing a game for being derivative is also fair game. The majority of non-Fromsoft Soulslikes never gain much traction or they get criticized heavily for just being worse souls games. The ones that get praise, like Lies of P and another Crab's Treasure get praised for taking the soulslike structure and doing something interesting with it, or by being incredibly high quality.

It would have been optimal for a level market if both consoles released a ConsoleOS that could run on either a random decent enough PC or a suggested and maybe console branded box. There would of course be a slight optimal use value loss on that making them more expensive. But the usability for the consumer would surely compensate most. The main thing holding such an idea back now when hardware is actually perfect for it, is that both companies are all in on charging for things (online, extra services) that are not possible on a common base system. Basically, they don't want to do SteamOS but rather use much resources to instead port games to it. Some irony there I suppose. 🙄
