Tbf Max Payne wasnt really getting serious hate, the criticism wasnt based on his look but more so that it isnt that great of a Max Payne Entry because of other factors compared to the previous games, Max's writing wasnt as good as Remedy and Sam Lake's writing for the character in 2 and 1. Making the game more of a cover shooter slowed down the gameplay a bit compared to the originals (which mostly effects the console players bc most PC players hardly use the cover system). The long unskippable cutscenes are some of the most dragging parts on repeated playthroughs to the point where a mod was made to give players the option to skip them, the 3 weapon limit vs the previous 2 game letting Max have any gun he picked up, and also the fact that besides it having more unskippable cutscenes, theres just a lot more cutscenes breaking up the gameplay in general. Some levels play a cutscene after almost every encounter. Fans said it wasnt a good Max Payne game but the majority never thought it was a bad game outside of the title's sake.

Prototype was much better than Infamous. I don't really remember people hating it but it's true that the latter was way overrated. This was also back when consoles were all the rage, so we 3rd worlders never got to play console exclusives. But humor in Tales from the Borderlands is absolute garbage (cringe millennial tier-writing). The game even suddenly decides to force a romance b/w Sasha and Rhys, and doesn't offer you any choice in the matter.

Probably more related to the second game and the fact that unless you have a physical copy of 1 it’s basically impossible to play because of how bad modern ports of it are (pc port is quite literally impossible to play)

Had to look into this because I was shocked to consider DeathSpank being panned because I loved all the games as a kid. Every aggregated score I've found the first two entries in the series sit at around an 8/10 with the third marginally though visibly lower, so I'm a little confused at its inclusion. Glad you enjoyed it though, ~12 year old me thought it was fantastic and I hope to revisit the games again someday.

I'm questioning how "bad" the reputation is from some of these games considering I played some of these and anyone else who did had mostly positive thoughts. Some I do think there's a reason for them. A lot of these things seem very subjective

Mirrors 👏 Edge 👏 Catalyst! The game got shat on when it released, and I can see why, since in 2016 I think people were getting sick of games being forced into an open world model, but I struggle to see why there wasn’t more love for it- its a pretty good game! And it follows the first one gameplay wise very faithfully and has amazing visuals and world design. Too much hate

Prototype has a bad reputation? I've never played it myself but I don't think I have ever heard someone say it's bad. I've watched multiple videos of people talking about how much they like the game actually. Also, when it comes to XCOM I think it's worth noting that the "why" on people being mean to games often has a big leaning on when a game released. For an example, metroid prime federation force. Objectively speaking fed force is a serviceable, if unremarkeble, little multiplayer spinoff. When it was revealed, however, it was torn to shreds by Metroid fans. Why? Because it was the first new metroid in close to a decade, with the previous game being Other M which is itself deeply hated. Nowadays Federation Force is regarded wirh apathy, and some may be puzzled by the hate it got Since Metroid is in a good place right now, but considering the historical context makes the outrage make more sense. Given the Xcom game you talked is a 360 game, a console and generation dominated by gritty first and third person shooters, and if I recall there hadn't been a traditional xcom game in a while at the time, I can see why it recieved the backlash it did.

Some people have really hard time letting go their hero syndrome, and enjoy games where protagonist is an objectively bad person. They feel "cheated" by game. Prime example is how people hate SpecOps the Line not for its generic, unremarkable gameplay, but because protagnist turned out to be villain of the story.

Hey there mate, first time viewer here. No idea how I've never once seen your content before seeing as how I'm an Aussie who playeth vidya games. Loved the video, very much agree with Max Payne 3, and to add, the amount of small world details and visual tidbits is astonishing (down to Max visibly sweating more and more after being shot at the stadium). I want to raise a banner for a very shat on title called "Rage". Rage 2 went all Doom 2016 meets Borderlands and found success, but Rage 1, in my opinion; was very special because it perfectly blended old school FPS (Quake, Unreal) with a semi-open world Mad Max style game that had Fallout inspired quests. Wingsticks are the greatest FPS lethal grenade of all time, and gaddamn if that shooting didn't feel spectacular for its time.
