I like that John calls out alternate explanations in a level-headed way. A lot of physicists would mock someone for not accepting dark matter and dark energy, which is comical when human history is people being wrong about the nature of reality because they could only think in terms of what was in front of them.
@Dragrath1
@Dragrath1 11 күн бұрын
Yeah the whole situation is pretty bad in cosmology as anyone who publishes results that don't fit the model get attacked and or stealth banned. The biggest example is probably the work by Nathan Secrest et al 2021 as using 1.36 million quasars from the catWISE database they performed a falsification test for the cosmological principal which was first recognized by Elis and Baldwin in 1984 as a consequence of observing a nonzero CMB dipole. For context the Cosmological Principal had predicted the CMB multipole terms should be randomly aligned and extremely close to zero while we we observed is a result where the dipole term is orders of magnitude too large. The Cosmological principal was then amended with the implicit assumption that this large dipole must in fact be the local kinematic dipole for the solar system despite said velocity required being anomalously high. Elis and Baldwin realized this assumption left a direct falsification test open which could prove or rule out all forms of the cosmological principal observationally if one could observe over a million cosmologically distant sources all across the sky and then compare that dipole directly with the CMB to test if as the cosmological principal requires that dipole is purely kinematic in origin i.e. the dipole should always be the same in magnitude and direction for any non local sources regardless of the direction. The initial results showed a 4.9 sigma discrepancy between these dipoles (which to compare the so called evidence for dark energy was only 3 sigma) but subsequent independent follow up work has only raised the significance of this falsification test results to 5.7 sigma well over the threshold of statistical significance which would lead particle physicists to classify a result as confirmed. Perhaps the most damming bit is that the observations cosmologists invented dark energy to explain as well as the observed bulk flow and the various impossibly large structures are all general trivial consequences in any inhomogeneous and anisotropic universe according to numerical simulations of the general unconstrained Einstein field equations. Its Kepler's heliocentric elliptical solar system which naturally fits observations without needing additional terms versus Ptolemy's geocentric circular solar system with many added "correction terms" to match the data. Occam's razor in each case says one of these is much more likely than the other.

If our local area of space was expanding faster than the general background rate then wouldn't there be some sort of 'bow wave' effect where 'our' space ran into the back of the surrounding space? Like if you were blowing up a ballon in a room full of smoke. The balloon gets bigger faster than the smoke expands. So it would sort of push the smoke away and create a denser area at the interface. Do we see anything like that around where we live? I'm no cosmologist though so it may be I'm totally misunderstanding how things work.

My first inclination is to suggest that what we are considering "very large scales" are in fact not large at al and that even though galaxies and galaxy clusters are very, very, very large, relative to the scale of the universe they are still tiny. My second inclination is to suggest that there are forces at work that we haven't yet discovered that account for the discrepancies between expectation and observation and that when taken into account, these forces reestablish universal homogeneity. My third inclination is to ask if existing inside of a void, as the milky way does, is more conducive to the formation of life than living in a denser area and that this is a partial solution to the Fermi paradox.

Just out of curiosity is it possible we're seeing same galaxies from different time periods? With all the stuff in the universe is it possible it somehow affect slowed down some incoming light to let light from same galaxy from more recent time catch up enough that what we see as two galaxies is same galaxy at different time intervals?

Thank you for another fascinating video! Don't think I've heard of the Local Hole before. So if I'm understanding correctly (not a sure thing) it was thought the existence of the Local Hole might explain the different values found for the Hubble Tension, but the data didn't support that. Meanwhile, the bulk flow within the Hole can be successfully modelled using MOND, which suggests that gravity may behave differently at scales larger than galaxies?

Another way of looking at very large samples is that there are more opportunities for even larger fluctuations on larger scales. If fluctuations are in fact random then the Big Bang itself could simply be the largest such fluctuation in our light cone which by taking up the entire light cone is the largest we could see if not the largest there could be. In somewhat related thinking what we are seeing could be the expected result of our universe absorbing baby big bangs with the interaction at the boundaries driving the large walls while local expansion may be a relic of "our" original big bang.

What if dark matter is just gravitational superposition? I mean if quantum particles are waves until they are observed by another particle shouldn't their movement in spacetime as a wave still warp it? So the gravitational effects of a single particle are themselves in a superposition state and thus until the wave collapses a particles gravity exists in multiple locations at once. Apply this to astronomical scales like galaxies and all particles in a superposition state gravity superposition could probably explain dark matter

Interesting stuff! I think that both dark matter and dark energy are the results of observations of the action of a force that Einstein called Lambda, for which (at that time) little solid evidence could be found. Lambda acts in opposition to gravity, being an outwardly expansive force. It is at its most powerful in the depths of the emptiest void, but cannot exist where gravity reaches a certain threshold value (a value that someone cleverer than me might be able to work out). It's opposition around the fringes of a galaxy leads to the phenomenon we call "dark matter", where it exerts a kind of pressure into the fringes of the gravitational character of the galaxy, cause gravity at that point to be "denser" (I know that seems weird, but it is what we see). Outside of the gravitational influence of matter, light frequencies are stretched by the expansive force of Lambda, which we observe as both the red shift and the CMB. The CMB is not the light of the earliest universe, but the cumulative remnant of the light reaching us from an infinite universe. The variations in the CMB as observed today correlate to some degree with the large scale structures of the observable universe, voids included, and where light passes through local voids it is more redshifted than when it does not. If we are indeed situated within a void, or a region of lesser density, then no wonder we see redshift in every direction. More so than if we were situated in a more dense region. We should also expect the redshift to be greater in some directions, depending on our location in the void (assuming it isn't exactly central), which is actually what we see. An observation as yet unexplained.
