One thing I would love to see is Valve or Epic making a console OS that they can license out to developers, that also gives you access to their respective stores. Cause the games library always ends up being the downfall of any attempt at a console from someone besides Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo.
@Kyle-un3ei4 жыл бұрын
Valve tried that a while ago with SteamOS, but it failed
@CommodoreFan644 жыл бұрын
@@Kyle-un3ei The main reason it failed was the licensed it out to various OEM PC makers, who then marketed it piss poor, and the hardware was not standardized. it's just a reskinned debian Linux with a custom installer that tells the system too boot straight into big picture mode, but you drop right onto the desktop, and use it like a normal computer. Valve has since made leaps, and bounds when it comes to Linux gaming, and getting stuff working, I use to on Manjaro with MATE DE, and on my main gaming PC with an AMD RX560 4G, 16GB DDR3 2133Mhz RAM, and an AMD A10 5800K OC to 4.1Ghz most games I play fine at 1080p even if they proton, or Linux runtime.
@tina-po4dx4 жыл бұрын
Valve already did that with the steambox and we don’t know where it went
@ShatteringKatana4 жыл бұрын
@@tina-po4dx The biggest problem with the steam machines was that the concept was so ahead of time it couldn't gain momentum. There are still some oversights Valve should fix to make Big Picture the end all console environment (automatic driver clean install, easier add non-steam games to library options like GoG Galaxy, better curation for their controller support and automatic game settings among many others), but the release window for the Steam Machine was absolutely unfavorable. People were way more suspicious of PC gaming back then, AMD didn't have a strong CPU lineup (so most prebuilt Steam Machines were very high end and somewhat bulkier Intel/Nvidia combos) and mid-high end laptop boards were either AMD/AMD (with an abysmal CPU bottlenecking an acceptably powerful GPU) or Intel/Nvidia combos (good, but more expensive). Alienware released the Alpha Steam Machine for $800 with an Intel/Nvidia combo and it was decent and compact, basically perfect if not for the price point. Controller support on PC games still was in an uncertain place, which is part of why SteamInput was born. These days people are accustomed to PC gaming thanks to streamers, better controller support from developers, SteamInput being one of the most powerful additions to controller gaming and very small form factor cases with high end components (for example the Velka 7 or 5). If Valve could get their hands back on their Big Picture projects full time and make the UX never (and I mean never, not even in edge cases) require KB/M, they really could make a comeback in great effect. What the company should do for starters is to make an OEM mode for big picture (I've seen it partially done with SteamOS) where the user can install their custom Windows image (which is so legal Microsoft has a how to page on it), launch Steam at startup and go through a first time configuration and then install all the required drivers for the hardware, all within Big Picture.

Everyone's talking about SteamOS and etc., but honestly... Just get a damn PC if you want that kind of functionality. PCs are really damn good at some things, and consoles are really damn good at others. The minute you try to make a console into a PC or vice versa is the minute you failed.

Depends. It surely won't be a device you get out every day, but something in the line of TheC64. I get mine out every now and then when I feel like it, same with my Raspberry Pi400 which is mainly configured as an "Amiga" with Amiberry (but does Atari 8bit too). I might get a VCS once it is available for at most 200 Euros and it's possible to add own ROMs to the system without using PC mode. If it is one day possible to have a menu page to select an emulated system and then select a game from that (with that 3D box art), that'd be a selling point for me. Playing the classics on a "thing" that resembles the old console with controllers which resemble the old ones is a whole different story than playing that stuff on PC or a RPi.

Last I checked, there is cheaper versions of this available. Without controllers and at the lowest ram option, the VCS 400 is 250. The 2 models are the 400 and 800. The 400 has 4 gigs of RAM and the 800 has 8 gigs of RAM. But apparently uses standard ram cards, not sure if DIMM or SODIMM, and can be upgraded. The VCS 800 is 300 without the controllers. At 250 it's decent for a mini PC with a ryzen APU that has some expandability.
@justclaws42224 жыл бұрын
They dropped the 400, and all consoles are 8GB, and it's long-time pre-order at Walmart for $249 or $279. You're right though. It uses an AMD APU, and it takes standard SODIMMs - max 2x 16GB. You can also add an internal M.2 SATA SSD for storage. The PC-Mode just boots you into another disk installation of your choice. I installed Windows 10 on one SSD, and Ubuntu 20.04 on another SSD. AtariOS is Linux based. Having an eco-friendly tiny PC next to the TV, is a nice thing. If Atari folded next month, you'd still have a tiny x86_64 eco-PC.

Not trying to defend them too much, but the Atari of today is only a tiny company with little capital. Unlike both Sony and MS who spent a huge amount of capital via RND and who are making no money on their new consoles, Atari is trying to make a small profit per box. Still, it is a nice looking memory of Atari's past and a nice compact form factor PC that will take extra ram and a m.2 drive. I really want to buy one, but have so many PCs at home and retro consoles that I do not know if it will be used at all. Upgradable RAM and storage is pretty cool too. You can put in a top of the line SSD and 32 gigs of RAM and it could probably handle games like Fortnite much better. One thing to keep in mind is that although they advertise it as 4k compatible, it really isn't. Don't bother 4k because the GPU isn't good enough. Also, this is currently early access, which is why it doesn't habe much games and has so many problems. And keep in mind other companies sell their consoles at a huge loss and profit off of the software. Atari can't do that because there's no current guarantee it will sell well enough for that. If this console is a success, I can easily see their next one begin to transition into that idea.

They advertise 4k streaming- not 4k local gaming. There is a distinct difference.
@cressothegrey43544 жыл бұрын
@@Josh-ce9sv What I saw a while back just said 4k. Never specified streaming or gaming. Although I did lately see things that did specify it, so I admit I was wrong.

If this system gets more exclusive games and if the dolphin emulator works well on it, it might be worth getting

Have that Atari Vault on my PC, PS4 and Switch (except switch version came with all 3 volumes). Wonder if that Atari inspired joystick would work with a PS4 or Switch, if so, THAT would be worth picking.

Pay extra for a limited run Collector's Edition with real wood front and then tell people that's the price... don't mention it's available for pre-order for as little as $249 or $279 at Walmart's website. Also no mention of this stage being early and for testing/tuning/polishing (backers only).

Definitely misleading on his part but still expensive. I might wait if it drops in price

I'm kind of surprised that the VCS is finally out. But I'm not sure how well it will sell for the general public. As consoles go people kind of want the console dedicated to playing games and doing it well. The VCS is sort of trying to be too many things. So people who actually want to do that could easily go buy a laptop and do the same thing for 100-150 dollars less. My laptop only cost me 300 bucks and it will do anything the VCS can do and it came with a 1TB hard drive. So why would anyone pay 100 dollars more for something that does the same thing a cheap laptop can do? Also I had a 2600 growing up and i hated the joystick. As soon as i figured out a sega genesis controller would work i threw away that joystick. Yes i was still playing atari 2600 games along side snes and genesis. But i just gotta say PC-Engine/Turbografx16 is still my favorite classic system and yes i did own a Turbo-Duo. And i had most of the US release scd games. Turbo zone direct were my best friends in the late 90s to early 2000s.

The tg16 is a severely underrated console, I'd love to see a revival of the brand doing more than just a mini console.
@IdentityCrisis15814 жыл бұрын
@@stevefitz2522 yes it was a shame that it was so underraited even when it was new. The mini didnt impress me that much because it only had a few games that made it worth getting and all of those i owned back in the day. What i would like to see is a complete rerelease of the system and games. Pc engine is just too expensive for most people to try and collect. And nec isnt benefitting from the used market so they may be surprised how well a full rerelease would sell.

What this console is best at is playing old games a new way. The vault would look better in 4k and scan lines, it would feel like your playing on a old tv and new controller.

mdwill76 I might just get one of these things when it has been out for a while and goes down price. My biggest issue is how much can you upgrade on the ram? Also is a monthly paid subscription required to use disk space or can I use an external disk drive? I mostly do retro gaming so this might be ideal. But if I have to pay a monthly subscription to make it as workable for what I need to use it for forget it.

They should've marketed it as a budget system and buy the rights to semi-popular games to make ports. Then they could get ambitious with their next machine.
