In May 1864, two major campaigns were launched by the United States against the Confederacy: The Overland Campaign pitting Ulysses S. Grant against Robert E. Lee in Virginia and The Atlanta Campaign pitting William T. Sherman against Joseph E. Johnston in Georgia. The Atlanta Campaign wasn't the bloodiest Campaign of the two, but it was arguably the most important in 1864 because it gave the Union and Abraham Lincoln's election Campaign a morale boost, prior to the 1864 elections in November. In this episode, the two sides fight the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain.

Thank you, Dr. Wilder. My 3x Great Grandfather, Private Jonathan Hales, Kolb’s Battery, Storr’s Battalion, Polk’s Corps, Army of Tennessee. He helped move the cannons up Big Kennesaw Mountain. I have his parole papers and Iron Clad Oath from the surrender in 1865. Finished Earl Hess’ book on Kennesaw Mountain and his book on Peachtree Creek-I grew up where the Army of the Cumberland crossed and fighting took place on July 18-19, 1864: trenches and cannon emplacements from Sears’ and Reynolds’ Brigades. Hood was a capable Brigade and Division commander, but he lacked the strategic ability to adequately command a Corps. Reading that Hood attacked at Kolb’s Farm without artillery or skirmishers, I was shocked that he was not relieved of command. He attacked blind without knowing the topography or enemy dispositions. This debacle would be reprised when Hood attacked at Peachtree Creek after he was promoted to Army Command, an unwarranted promotion given his poor performance in command of a Corps.

Hood being sent to the army of the Tennessee I am convinced accelerated the death of said command.

They desperately needed a commander somewhere between Johnston's unwillingness to attack and Hood's reckless aggression.

Hardee was probably the best choice, but Davis’ distrust of him after he and the other generals voiced no confidence in Bragg after Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge made this an unlikely choice.

@philiphales2109 Patrick Cleburne would have been the best, but that wasn't going to happen.

@@crippledcrow2384 After Cleburne’s proposal to free and enlist slaves in October 1863, he was distrusted by Davis, many politicians, and many fellow officers, and he was, in effect, not going to be further promoted. He would have been the logical choice to assume Corps Commander instead of Hood, but Davis had a real penchant for West Point graduates, which when combined with his proposal to free slaves, disqualified him.

My great-great-great grandfather also fought in that battle, on the opposite side, with the 57th Illinois Infantry.

The selected narratives really help to promote an understanding of the fight; photos and animations are excellent.

If Lee had settled into Pennsylvania and started to work his way toward DC the way Sherman is inching his way across Georgia... the North would have sued for peace by now.

Thank you Dr Wilder. While Confederate artillery is mentioned, I felt that Union artillery is heard less often. What role did Union artillery play in this battle or was it small scale use due to restricting terrain?

4:55 I appreciate the map, as it allows me to locate the part of the battle my great-great-great grandfather was in, as he was in the 57th Illinois Infantry, which was assigned to the 2nd Division under Sweeny, in the XVI Corps under Dodge, in the (Union) Army of the Tennessee, under McPherson.

Should've just sent Schofield around the Confederate left completely. No need to throw brave men against fortifications. Oh hell, i sound like Thomas. If only he had a better idea that day. Something other than digging underneath enemy trenches!🙄

at the 5:20 mark, Walcutt's brigade included the 40th IL not the 40th IN. The 40th IL commander, Col Barnhill, was KIA in their assault of Little Kennesaw. Fortunately my family members in the regiment survived the battle. the 40th IL had just arrived in theater coming back from furlough, this was their first action in the Atlanta Campaign.
