Prefacing the scene where Helen threatens the Mariner's life as if it's an example of the mistreatment of women is a bit much. She literally aimed a lethal weapon at him and he knocked her out. That's pretty reasonable even by our standards today. lol

It occurred to me while watching this that Helen shares a lot of characteristics with Ripely from the Alien films: Both are capable of taking care of themselves, both can think fast and act in life-or-death situations, and both have a somewhat ruthless pragmatism to them; they even share a scene where they point out something very important to others, but they ignore her and die as a result (Ellen refusing to let the infected Kane onto the Nostromo for fear of threatening everyone else, and Helen pointing out that the Mariner could lead the Atollers to dry land, though a few Atollers do survive). I’d say that between them, Helen is a bit more willing to do whatever it takes to achieve her goals, like (reluctantly) putting up with the Mariner’s abuse and is a bit less capable of combat, where Ripley doesn’t tolerate stupidity, can put up a ferocious fight if needed, and has a stronger focus on saving others. But in both cases, they’re strong-willed, capable women who are just as capable as men in surviving whatever comes their way. Also, cross dressing Leonardo DiCaprio at 44:27!

Great stuff mate!!!! Fantastic, but I do have an observation to make. I've been real busy repainting all my WaterWorld toys, mostly thanks to you, who showcased the brilliant sculpture of the figures. I've repurposed a Jurassic Park Ellie for Helen and during the research period discovered that she gains a completely new costume on the trimaran. Her netting style dress that at one point has a pair of capri pants under it and the bodice over it becomes the fish skin/ laced up dress that I feel is the one we are most familiar with. Ellie makes a fantastic base but if I find another one in the wild, I'd make up the earlier costume as well. Painting the trimaran is my next project, adding new sails and rigging and doing some minor additions. It's got an undercoat so far and it already looks better. Thanks for all your work, it's much appreciated. On a side note, did you want to see the Australian video release promotions package?

According to IMDB, a lot of different actors were considered for the film: Gene Hackman, James Caan, Gary Oldman, Jack Nicholson, Gary Busey & Laurence Fishburne were considered or turned down the role for "The Deacon" and Academy Award-winner Anna Paquin was the first choice for "Enola". Apart from that, there's no info whether or not if other actresses had been considered for "Helen" or if Jeanne Tripplehorn was always the choice for the role.

Like I said, during 2005 when my older friend went there he took notice that Helen was portrayed by the talented American voice actress Grey DeLisle in this stunt show at Universal studios Hollywood.

Women's rights are a luxury of a civilized and safe society. Water World is neither of these things. Helen had independence and even influence and leadership on Atoll which was, somewhat safe, but still lacked luxuries. Once she's on the Mariner's ship she has... nothing. She offers him nothing, at least initially. The Mariner's actions are totally justified. They are burdens to him that he has saved only for some fleeting sense of morality that goes beyond the simple necessities of survival.

Ill be honest, I still view Helen as a pretty useless character, only existing for the sake of plot and so the mariner can become a hero by the end. How is a supposed bussiness owner who traded for a living going to buy a busted ass fishing pole. Her first thought was to try to screw the dude to prove she had something of value lol
