In my experience, based on girlfriends around that time, women loved the classic Tomb Raider games as much as us men. They loved Lara's no-nonsense attitude and confidence. I recall one gf being ecstatic at a bit in one of the games where Lara discovers some ancient throne room and can't resist trying the throne for size. She thought it was a lovely character moment, and said she knew before it happened that Lara would do that, because that's exactly what the character _would_ do. If people "just know" how a fictional character is going to react to a given situation, that's when you know you've created a proper character - no matter how few words she speaks, or how thinly-sketched her backstory is; she's a character. And this Netflix Lara is not the same character. There's not even a feeling that she could ever grow to become that character.

Romanian Vee in "Why Everyone Hates Dove Commercial": _So you have these individuals that are bitter about this thing. And they want to fight against reality. Now they can't really fight against reality. But they can fight and force other people to tell them what they want to hear. So even though you're not as good as [?], as long as everyone lies to you, as long as everyone tells you that you are, you're going to believe that sh*t. And this is why they actually trying to accomplish. Now how do they accomplish this? Well in the American Academia you have a couple of hags, usually ages around 60 and 65, surrounded by catpiss, who gorge themselves out of the taxpayer money - indirectly through student loans - and they thought that, okay people don't like to see images of dead kittens. It's something that most people generally don't want in their life. Like it's disturbing right? Like you don't want to see dead kittens. Like why would you want to see that? But if we actually manage to get everyone to see pictures of dead kittens - in commercials, in movies, in TV shows, in cartoons, when you go and you watch a baseball - you get to see a picture of a dead kitten then, eventually, it becomes normalized. And people will start liking to see pictures of dead kittens. This is the ideology, right? And instead of that kittens, apply everything else you want. Morbidly obese people. People that are disfigured, like like - it doesn't really matter, right. LGBT people. Like you can insert and swap everything you want. But the reality is that the ideology itself isn't working. It just doesn't work that way. When you start showing people stuff they don't want to see, like pictures of that dead kitten, they just tune out. They just don't care. And that's when they get really angry. They get really angry not because they care about the product, right. They don't care if Dove loses sales over this. They don't care if Concord doesn't sell. They don't care if Forespoken has its Studio going bankrupt. They don't give a sh*t about that. What they care is that people are rejecting the message. And they view themselves as authoritative. They view themselves as smart enough, because if their message isn't working that means that the Academia made a mistake. But the Academia cannot possibly make mistakes. They genuinely think that the Academia is the only place where humans can get knowledge from. And it has to be infallible. So if the Academia says that "if we show people pictures they don't want to see and then people will like it", when it turns out that's not the case, then they will never think that "okay maybe the premise was wrong". They will think "no maybe we're not doing it enough" and this actually happened in communism._

I remember in an old game magazine I saw as a kid, maybe Gamepro not sure, and it had a sexy pinup of Lara lying naked beneath bedsheets for an article talking about the series. It really is such a stark contrast compared to the olden days when companies actively wanted to show off how sexy their female characters were. To now where you're a horrible sexist bigot if you dare think a woman shouldn't be as mannish as possible. At least the indie space isn't afraid to show that women are indeed women.

I played the first three games on release, and the first reboot game. I loved those games, the character, the stories, and I love the Angelina movies. Why make a show/movie out of a popular IP if you aren't going to be as faithful as possible? I guess you can say that out of 95% of things Hollywood does today. The Angelina Jolie movies weren't great, but when you saw the trailer you said "that's Lara Croft". The outfit, the attitude, the guns...
@bogstandardash3751Ай бұрын
Several reasons: New IP is hard to get commissioned generally. LGHDTV+ media needs to attach itself to successful straight IP. Otherwise non LGHDTV+ audiences just assume it's not for them and ignore it. Their thinking is that they get more audience this way.

@@bogstandardash3751 I disagree. I think the purpose of acquiring and changing the IP is political and has no bearing on it's financial success. So I decided to play the OG games for the first time (the real OG games, not the remasters), and let me tell you, it was refreshing to see the intro for the first level where Lara confirms her guide is dead, says nothing and moves on into the tomb. No bullshit, just keep moving. Really says a lot about how differently she was portrayed back then, because this "Lara" would've probably spent a good few hours crying about that guy before moving past the doors.

As soon as in the 2nd episode when Lara is collecting the 2nd red box, Lara did the same chin wipe as Indiana Jones did in his first movie to judge the weight of the gold idol to replace it with a bag of sand, for the booby trap that triggered the bolder, but Lara just did it for no reason as nothing happened. i knew this was going to be a thing. episode 5 Lara and bad guy struggle to get the artifact in a crowd of people that end up kicking it around by mistake as they try to flee... just like at the start of Indiana Jones 2 with the antidote and the diamond in the club. episode 8 has two of the puzzles/trails from Indiana Jones 3, The Name of God Puzzle... Jehovah. Professor Henry Jones: But in the Latin alphabet, "Jehovah" begins with an "I", where you can only step on certain tiles or they fall away. Then there is the Leap of Faith trail where you step out into seemingly nothingness but are able to keep on walking just like Indy did... ._.

I've seen multiple people and media outlets call this "the Tomb Raider Anime", and I must say I hate how often these really soulless bland action shows written and storyboarded in LA or Texas, and animated in a Korean animation sweatshop, get labelled as 'anime' as a marketing gimmick because otherwise adult animation in the west is exclusively the domain of shitty Family Guy or Rick and Morty clones If I wanted to watch a bad anime, I'd just watch Jujutsu Kaisen!

The fact that there are more female writers in Hollywood doesn't seem to have changed that fact. We need to stop asking “Why do they keep doing this?” to beloved IPs. We know why. It’s to push an ideology that isn’t embraced or held by the majority, to fundamentally change our values, beliefs, and what we view as normal across a range of issues. (Fat is beautiful and healthy, validating mental illness is compassion and progress, etc.) These companies know the modern audience is a relatively tiny subset of people that anyone with a shred of sense wouldn’t waste time, money, and resources catering to. They continue to burn hundreds of millions in their quest to push The Message across as much media as they can. People ask why these companies and studios don’t just start writing their own new characters and stories instead of ruining beloved characters and franchises by pouring modern slop all over them. The answer is that these IPs have millions of established, longtime fans, which took years to build and would take years to build for a new IP (and only if it was successful). It’s easier to push The Message onto an existing audience then to try and do it via new IPs that no one would be interested in and wouldn’t engage with based on the terrible content. People will keep consuming Star Wars, Star Trek, Dr. Who, etc. no matter how shitty they become because they’re blindly loyal, longtime fans. Makes it much easier to push propaganda on them when all they do is brainlessly consume said IP.

The problem these days is that the writers have no sense of the pool that stories like Tomb Raider, or Star Wars are derived from - pulpy, Boys Own adventure tales and movie serials, or they’re extremely embarrassed by it. These writers grew up watching Buffy or The OC where it’s all about the relationship dramas, they have no idea about the mechanics of heroic storytelling, that’s why everything we loved as kids is now being bent out of shape because the people at the wheel have the wrong idea about what it is and what made it work in the first place. For example, look at how Ron Howard (a contemporary of Lucas) approached SOLO - it’s a fun, swashbuckling romantic adventure - because he’s familiar with the ingredients that George put into SW. Compare that to TLJ or The Acolyte - which seek to deconstruct the genre, are heavily analogous with real life, modern day issues, and characters talk to each other like it’s a therapy session - that would be perfect for Buffy, but it’s not SW. We need people writing these things that have a love for, and understanding of the genre they’re in.
