And the one or two stories where he even briefly begins enjoying some aspect of it (eating girly foods in public, wielding feminine wiles), it quickly leads to bad consequences (moral and psychological) that disabuses him of the notion. It truly uses the 'gender bending' premise to highlight/honor the differences between genders, not to blur them.

Some Curses are Physical whilst some are Mental. That's just how Jusenkyo works. Some say the Curse balance you out which is why Ranma who was raise to be a Manly Man is given the girl curse. Chinese Mysticism is about Balance. There is always light within darkness and darkness within light. Yin and Yang. Problem with the so called "Woke Mob" is that where their ideas were strictly related to Fanfiction they've since wanted to make their Fanfiction the main Continuity which IMO defeats the point of Fanfiction cause you need a solid foundation to base your fanfic ideas on. If that's the main story then Poof their goes your creativity. That's why this shit is seen as Lame now. There's no "there" there anymore. Have I read stuff where Ranma is locked into female form an has to deal with that? Yes but I don't want that to be the main story anymore then I want my favorite Ship of Ranma/Nabiki to be the end all be all dispite the fact that it rules. Be well, and Fuck the KotTF. To speak on Shad's point about Akane changing from the original "I hate boys" to "I hate men", that is solely a dubbing issue. In the Japanese she says the exact same lines as the original version using "otoko no ko" not "dansei", mind you the acting was different, but direction is what it is. So this was 100% a dubbing thing that they decided to make her hate "men" rather than "boys (her peers)". As with pretty much every issue with anime in the west... It's the people creating dubs and to a lesser degree subs that are the issue.

Agreed. And even if it's not toned down, it 'won't be the same' and will therefore be less desirable regardless. Maybe if they adhere to the manga more closely than the show did, get the different ending, etc, it could be a semi-separate property, that could stand on its own merits. Kinda like the two Hunter X Hunter series that are ultimately more different than identical.

@@SassyCassie89 TL; DR: "mob" refers to a group of toxic fans who fight for their headcanon in spite of canon; Ranma 1/2 is subversive of gender tropes in only one respect, and that's learning to be empathetic; and, hey, if the remake appeals to "the mob" then let it appeal to "the mob". They have the remake. The original series exists for the ones that follow the canon. I'm not OP, but I'll try to add a little nuance to this. "Mob", according to Merriam-Webster's dictionary, means "a large crowd of disorderly or riotous people". Similarly, Cambridge says that a mob is a "large, angry crowd, especially one that can become violent". From these definitions, we can infer that something being 'for the mob' means that something meant to appease a toxic group of people. A good example of this would be the Prequel vs Original Trilogy conflict within the Star Wars community. For many, the Prequels are bad films. They're boring, they're nothing like Star Wars, they're clunky and full of plot holes, etc. For others, they're as Star Wars as they come. The toxic fans are the ones fighting it out: the Prequel Deniers and the Prequel Denier Haters. Ranma 1/2, as a series, was made by someone who wrote about traditional stereotypes, traditional beliefs, traditional everything. In fact, the subversion of gender norms being made throughout the series is that Ranma slowly learns to be more open about his emotions regarding Akane instead of hiding behind the teasing and belittling, and even that's slow going because it takes time to open up about this kind of stuff when you've grown up on the whole "men are strong, feelings are weak" mentality. Similarly, Akane being so tough is also a subversion of gender stereotypes, having her maintain a sense of agency throughout the whole story without being pulled about by simple "I like him, so I'll do this to get him to like me" trope. So, if something is "for the mob", it's for people who want specific headcanon to be made real instead of adhering to the vision of Takahashi-sensei. Yes, this series is very traditional, but it also reinforces a few positive masculine traits that Ranma slowly learns throughout the series. His time flip-flopping between a male and female anatomy gives him more clarity regarding Akane's dislike for boys, and it gives him more opportunities to be a little more mature and compassionate. He grows into someone that can be relied upon. It's about dismissing the whole "boys will be boys" trope by teaching just a little bit of empathy. At the end of the day, Ranma 1/2 reboot is a remake of the original manga and show. If we dislike it, we can always go back to the originals. I still go back to the older Sailor Moon anime (in Japanese, because sod making Nepture and Uranus cousins instead of a lesbian couple. Let them be gay!) rather than the newer ones simply because I like the older ones. That's pretty much it, yeah. If you don't watch it, someone else will.

In Japanese, 男 (otoko) is the kanji for man and it generally doesn't infer age. If you've looked into Japanese language at all, you'll quickly discover there are basically 3 levels of etiquette in speech. There's polite, casual, and rude. Using just otoko to call someone a man is considered rude. The polite way to say man is 男の人 (otoko no hito), and boy is 男の子 (otoko no ko). In the remake episode 2, both Akane and Ranma when arriving at the school only use 男 as they hate each other so they're speaking rudely to each other. In episode 1, Nabiki uses the word 男嫌い (otoko kirai) which means man-hater; 嫌い (kirai) is an adjective noun meaning to hate and so you attach 男 to the front to form the compound word. So just from the original Japanese words used you can't fully derive the intent that Akane just hates boys but not adult men, but given the earlier context of her obvious crushing on Dr Tofu I think it's the fairest assumption to make.

Early on it's more of an "I hate guys" as an all-in-compassing statement but we do get the context not much later. English dubs really hate nuance like that and ADR has to match the flaps so it's hard to get all that in without adding a translation note.

Akane is right on the cusp of puberty where she "hates boys" (ie. the standard kid who thinks the opposite sex is gross) but starting to develop romantic feelings (crush on her "teacher" (Dr. Tofu)). If you have an issue with "woke", but love Ranma, then watch the sub. There's a decent chance that some annoying bits will creep into the dub, but since the base Japanese is made in Japan, I would be shocked if that's an issue. There are some people in Japan that are more (American-style) progressive, but generally speaking, Japan is a very different society and they're not going to make these shows to cater to a US audience. And I am willing to lay money right now that Netflix isn't going to try to "force" them to put "woke" themes into it. Urusei Yatsura and Ranma are being remade because they are classics (in Japan) and the industry can make money re-doing it, it's that simple.

In Ranma 1/2, Akane considers insults that attack her femininity to be the worst insults you can throw at her. Ukyo throws away her femininity when "rejected" as a child, but immediately begins dressing, behaving and speaking like a girl for the rest of the series when Ranma compliments her appearance. Tsubasa is a male crossdresser who is horrified at the thought of people thinking he is gay, and insists people just accept it's a fetish he enjoys. Shampoo despises Ranma when she thinks he is a girl that defeated her, but becomes head over heels for him when she realizes she was bested by a strong man. Rumiko Takahashi likes strong females, but she never tries to undermine traditional values. Even in her over the top series like Ranma 1/2, she never writes the young female fighters as being even in the same league of strength as their male counterparts.

Ranma 1/2 treats gender in the same way Mob Psycho treats superpowers, talents, athleticism or body odour; a trait, but doesn't define you. Akane shouldn't be seen as any less "feminine" just because she has overtly "masculine" hobbies. Ranma isn't any less of man just because of his curse. Kasumi shouldn't be shamed for being a traditional woman compared to her sisters; she's what keeps the household together. Nabiki shouldn't be shamed for being ambitious and oppurtunistic. There is no shame in being who you are unless you are hurting others. It's a story about the importance of communication and respect. Talking about feelings shouldn't be seen as something "girly", but that was how Ranma was raised. Ranma himself was raised by an abusive misogynist that really drilled male expectations into his head; so what he considers "manly" at the start should be taken with a grain of salt. The curse was a way to peel away the superficial stuff Ranma learned from his father who is the farthest away you can get from an upstanding man. It's by becoming a woman and walking some miles in their shoes that Ranma learns what it truly is to be a man. Ranma earns his mother's acknowledgement as a man among men despite his curse. Ranma sacrifices the cure in the final arc in the manga because Akane is more important to him. To me it's a story that says people ascribe way too much of their identity to gender; it's probably the most boring aspect of a person. Just be a good person and respect others; focusing too much on gender just makes you lose sight of what's actually important. Trying to force something just hurts you more in the end.

Depends what you call traditional values Takahashi celebrates what she considers the true meaning of ideal man and woman, flawed people that make each other better. But constantly attacks in the manga what was considered traditional in 80s japan Mind reminding you... the most traditional characters in Ranma are the Kuno siblings. One is very stoic and a iaido practitioner, like a samura, the other is a gymnast dancer, wich was the 80s go to club for women back then, both well positioned people and on the outside , very traditional. And they are also both giant perverts, both sexually harrass ranma depending if hes a man or a woman. The reason the plot started is because of an ARRANGED marriages, and if you think thats outlandish, maybe in 80s America, In 80s Japan families still practiiced arranged marriages. Go read the manga , or read a wiki and see why ranma mother , the very traditional , always wearing kimono housewife , is looking for ranma and Genma always with the family katana in hand. Shampoo likes ranma because hes strong. But also because of the TRADITION of her village wich dictates that a men that beats a woman is worth of her love and she HUNTS DOWN ranma to get him to marry her. She at some point used a powder that would undo ranma curse, and even when she realizes its only temporal still tricks ranma into going out with her with it. Rumiko was absolutely against tradition, the entire manga constantly throws jabs at the idea of love being defined by traditional values. She doesnt make women stronger than men physically because she adheres to natural laws. she was against tradition, not reality. reality dictates men and women need each other, love is part of human nature. And part of the manga was all about letting love flourish naturally, not try to impose it with traditions or rules.

As someone who makes videos about very very old Japanese folklore, I can assure you that there are few ideas more fundamental to traditional Japanese culture than the very real and concrete differences between men and women and how their coming together is the proper state of the universe. In the original, founding myths of Japan, everything in the world was born from the union of "The Male Who Invites" Izanagi and "The Female Who Invites" Izanami. It's very clear that the sun goddess, Amaterasu, also rules alongside a male counterpart, Takamimusubi, suggesting that it's proper for even the greatest of the gods to be with the very distinct opposite sex. There's a poem by a goddess called Suseribime to her husband Okuninushi where she takes the idea that women stay in one place while men move around, for granted. The Tale of Genji and all the foundational romantic literature of Japan's first golden age, the Heian Period (my favorite period of Japanese history) never suggests that men and women can, or should, be interchangeable or that people are anything different that what they are born as. As such, if anyone comes to you claiming that the Japanese in ancient times had even slightly progressive ideas about the sexes and gender roles, please know that they are either taking very specific moments of history and literature out of context and hyper focusing on them to justify an untenable claim, or they're just out of their minds.

It's what criminals do when detectives find out they were guilty and when presented with evidence they try to make up a story that sounds like they were more innocent than they actually are. That's what the woke mob do with anime: they accuse people of things they are guilty of. This means when you defend yourself the spotlight is never on them. It's a tactic of the radical left. Hoh? Videos about very very old Japanese folklore? You have my attention. (I'm guessing yes, but it'd still be interesting to know.)

@@Mylstrydr Well, it's hard to say. There is some very clear Chinese influence in the works of the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, but even since the days of Himiko there's been a noticeable presence of both a male and a female sovereign ruling together, and given how important the male-female dichotomy features in the old myths I'm inclined to believe that it's mostly a Japanese thing that was reinforced and supported by Chinese philosophy. I mean, you do have to be at least a little delusional to insist that the male-female dichotomy is only a social construct and I'm pretty sure almost all non post modern cultures take it for granted.

I'm a trans-woman, even having had SRS done for a shallow depth, and did grow up watching the anime and reading the fan-translation of the manga of the originals. I whole heartedly agree with what you say in all of this, and hate how it's become a trans icon. I thought it would have been nice back when I was between 12 and 15 to be able to have such a curse, but other than that I understood the characters and nuances even as a pre-teen into teen watching/reading it. I watched it for the funny dumb things that would happen, and the actual story coming together with him and Akane. Hate how so many subvert and twist/turn it into something it's not to fit their ideology. He is not trans, nor is Herb for that matter. And there's cross dressing characters as well, but there's reason and story behind WHY they do/did such. Especially given the time period it was made in, and the expected social roles there were. His own mother is meant for him to commit seppuku for not becoming a 'man among men,' which almost happens. Meanwhile the ones putting it on their pedestal for 'egg cracking' and idolization just watched it and had glossy eyed dreams about the curse's effect on him and ignore the rest of the material's premise and story/lore. I see a lot of them praising this remake and praying that Happosai is never in it for him being such a 'problematic' character as well. I've seen clips and pieces from the first couple episodes, and just outright refuse to really bother watching it, even if the colouring and animations are nice. I'll stick with the original 80s materials. I have no faith in the remake, especially when Japan and anime is starting to steer towards Western imposed ideals for media made content lately.

Correct me if wrong, but owing to the hierarchical nature of Japanese culture she would use otoko to refer to her peer level, and would use dansei for what we would call older men. @classicalextremism yeah that's true from a formal standpoint but more than likely she'd still say just "otoko" just in most cases when referring to either. "Dansei" is a bit more formal and situational. If she were referring to someone younger like a child or to try to purposely label someone as immature she'd say "otokonoko" which contrary to what the same weirdos who alter the subs inaccurately would have you believe literally just means "boy" as in specifically non adult or adolescent male. The term otokonoko has no connection to anything LGBT or trans related. I've seen some bad faith sub translations for certain anime lately where there's a dude masquerading as a woman that have alluded otherwise and it's just not true.

Second of all I didn't insinuate that the localizers are woke necessarily or that anything as of yet was changed to that effect, just that if anything going forward with the subtitles IS out of pocket it will have been due to that fact because so far it has been accurate to the japanese dialogue, 3rd of all i read the entirety of the Manga before the end of the last millennium. And lastly the fact that you feel the need to jump to the defense of people because I suggested the POSSIBILITY of woke meddling which absolutely is and has been a problem in localized Anime for a while, really makes it seem like you took it personally that I even suggested it, which is a bit telling.

I think we need to consider that Ranma was created by a woman in the 80s, and that it was a romantic comedy aimed at boys, which became popular with a lot of girls because the comedy and characters were pretty well written. It is also semi harem-y for both leads, Ranma and Akane, and the manga becomes so tangled in relationships deeper down the line that shipping wars would be inevitable. Also, there are gender-bending male characters in Ranma later on, and we actually get to see quite the spectrum of female characters (from very feminine to pretty boyish)

This was a pretty good video. I hate to be that person, but the whole concept of Akane saying "I Hate Men" is exactly from the manga, so it is still authentic and in character for Akane. She says it in chapter 3 when Ranma questions her about it. It seems the new series on Netflix, similar to the new adaptation of Urusei Yatsura, another work from Rumiko Takahashi, the reboot will be heavily faithful to the manga. So what you see in the scene where Ranma overhears Akane's complaints of him in the new series is actually the original intent and the original anime's version is a modified version. If you do not like the new series, then that's perfectly fine as I too prefer the original series of these Rumiko Takashi reboots. But just know that everything the reboot is doing is authentic and in line with the original intent of the Ranma 1/2 series.

Unfortunately I don't think current day ainme fans would really understand that even subtle differences can make a remake, no matter how much more visually enhanced, worse than the original. It's happening with Konami and Silent Hill right now. It doesn't matter if these changes fundamentally change the game's story. People just want that sweet nostalgia or just "need" something new. At the end of the day wanting new thing trumps any principles or morals one might have. I say this as someone who has let their desire override their principles before. It led to disappointment, but hey, that's life.

At least not until the whole DEI system is destroyed and retired for good.

It could easily be said that Ranma is about deconstructing traditional gender roles and rejecting them to simply be yourself. Half of the problems Ranma has come from overcompensating for turning into a girl and trying too hard to be a man. Same for Akane, she often tries too hard to be a paragon of traditional femininity like her older sister Kasumi without taking her time (especially when cooking) without understanding how much effort it take and what it cost her older sister. Tatewaki Kuno and the "hentai horde" that attack Akane everyday before school can be seen as an example of toxic masculinity and male entitlement. Rather than try to win over Akane, the most attractive girl at school, normally? They totally ignore Akane's feelings seeing her as a prize to win via combat and basically attempt to force themselves on her. Even Kuno, who puts some minimal effort into romance, thinks that Akane should simply swoon over him because he is a good-looking young man from a wealthy important family.
@sofiagreenwoodsequeira4538
@sofiagreenwoodsequeira4538 Ай бұрын
true,, Ranma start later to understand why Akane is like that with Kuno, and she tells him to be careful with him and Mikado; the other students started only to leave Akane when they found out about their engagement; I believe that Ranma shows advantages and disadvantages of living situations the other gender sometimes pass, some empathy for the other, and acceptance if you are different. But does not put tradition as bad, like with Kasumi. Akane does get better at cooking in the manga, and Ranma eats her food to motivate her. The censorship has more to do with in Japan is being aired at 8pm, which is family schedule, with very popular manga and Ranma already suffered from censorship in the 90s.

Your worries are purely a translation error. I just went and checked both the old and new Ranma japanese version as I speak Japanese. In episode one of both version when Akane says it after she spars with Ranma in the dojo, she uses the word "Otokonoko" which means boy. In episode 2 of both version when they run to school after they run into the teacher they use the word "Otoko" which means man. So in japanese the dialogue is the exact same, and they simply use both Boy and Man. However the word choice is pointless anyway in that scene as the visuals and pacing says more than the words. It's rather obvious that what Akane is fed up with is all the school boys attacking her to win her over.

The author of Ranma is a pretty conservative and traditional Buddhist woman. When asked of Ranma could get pregnant and she said she doesn't think about it and neither should anyone else. So much so that a lot of woke Leftist constantly accuses her being misogynistic, homophobic, and all the usual stuff, cuz she doesn't conform to their lunacy. The answer is though, yes, Ranma can get pregnant. Despite telling people not to think about it, this is strongly suggested in the manga itself. Though Ranma would have to stay a girl the entire pregnancy, otherwise bad things happen. There's even an episode where Ranma's two halves gets cloned and they end up becoming a couple. Wierd, I know. Selfcest babies are not recommended.
@darkshao51
@darkshao51 2 ай бұрын
I don't think it's implied anywhere that Ranma could get pregnant. There are probably jokes about it, but technically speaking, there's no evidence that it could actually be the case. Especially since it would cause problems when he changes into a male since men don't have uteruses. Let's not forget the fact that if he can change into a woman it's due to a curse. It's more supernatural than scientific.

Boys and Men is just the difference in age. By high school (which it seems they are) guys would prefer to be called 'men' not 'boys' This might have been different when it was initially released. You absolutely hit the point with your gender identity talk. And Ranma is an entertaining and mostly funny show, if you ignore the one dark spot, which is that - often for comedic purposes - the show trivializes sex related crimes quite a bit (examples: Nabiki selling semi-nude pictures of an underage "girl", Kodachi and Shampoo using drugs to try and secure possession of their love interest, large parts of Furinkan High's male student body harrassing Akane every morning with their attempts to force her to agree to date them (which is the real reason she hates boys, NOT simply because she thinks they are immature), multiple cases of girls getting touched in inappropriate places without their consent (worst example: the guy on the ice skating rink who is known to grab and kiss girls he finds attractive), Happosai stealing female underwear either off women's bodies or from their homes). And a Reboot is something the show doesn't need, if one wants to stay true to the original. Simply remastering it for better visual quality, as you suggested, should be enough there.

Needless to say I never knew there was an original cartoon series, so I was thinking about watching, what I now know is, the re-boot. More over, it has been over a decade since I've come back to this media (written or watched), and such nuances from these first two episodes would have been entirely lost on me. Thank you for the heads up. Not only do I intend to watch the original cartoon, of which there are many places to view, and quite safely too, on the high seas, and will wait to hear whether or not this new version has been subverted for evil. I can't speak for the dub (as I just don't watch dubs at all if I can help it) but take it from a fan of the OG Ranma anime, the subbed verion of the reboot is awesome. I love how the animation looks like it was pulled from the 80s but made more fluid like a 2020s anime. The artstyle is also nice, and I love how certain elements will actually change the artstyle. For example, when Akane shrieks like "Kyaaaa~~~!", the Japanese text キャァアア appears, but instead of just being stagnant, it waves around energetically as she holds the "aaaaaaaaa" causing the ア to stretch and wave like a writhing creature across the screen, with whatever part of the scene is _behing_ the ア being changed from the colorful, full animation to a red/sepia manga-esque artstyle. I wish I could link an image, but needless to say the show looks awesome.

There is another issue to consider. With "modern creatives" unable to understand that changing even smaller details of an original story, they undo entire arcs and storylines, which turn it into vastly less impactful moments, not to mention, the characters will start to feel like caricatures, not real people that deal with real relationship issues and challenges. I'm actually far more concerned they will turn their relationship into an open relationship, and trying to bash his male side, than any progressive identities.

Trying to claim Ranma as 1) comfortable with transforming into a girl and 2) a trans icon are the 2 most STUPID things. He's a quintessential shounen who knows nothing but fighting and acting tough. Him transforming into a girl is played for laughs and he is annoyed by it EVERY TIME it happens. It is a curse and he openly hates it. He hates that people are trying to TAKE ADVANTAGE of this to pick on him and he only ever plays along with it to troll people or to get another person who's cursed to end up transforming into something they hate. he's not trans, he's not happy with his situation, he's not attempting to be girly, he's always asserting himself AS A MAN which he is and that his "condition" is a curse, which he dislikes. If you wanna claim Ranma as a trans icon, there are heavy and NEGATIVE implications. You'd be implying that the trans person is 1) Already comfortable with how they were born, 2) Treats becoming something else as a curse, 3) Is constantly being trolled by others turning him into something he's was not born as or is comfortable with for ulterior motives, 4) Is constantly being taken advantage of by selfish people and 5) Not trans at all, but should conform and exist to confirm your fetishes and ego. There are trans characters in Anime, Games, Manga, Films, etc... But Ranma Saotome is 100% NOT what you should go for. But people do cuz he's popular and widely loved. And in stead of creating HUMAN trans characters themselves, activists want to impose their ideology where it's not supposed to be. And when they actually create a Trans Character... We get that character from Veilguard.

Ranma is a guy Who was raised by a father Who promised that he would make him a true man, although his ignorant dad thought that in order to be a man you need to be the stereotypical macho man ( physically strong, fearless, emotionless ) . So when Ranma is cursed in a woman’s body his dad and of course Ranma itself thinks he cannot be a real men. The wonderful thing about this manga is the journey that Ranma goes through , he starts by believing what a real man should be like ( read above) and ends up accepting his other half because he understood that wearing girls clothes, doing sports/activity that are considered feminine like : artistic gymnastic , cooking contest, ice skating, ect.. All those things doesn’t make him less of a man, because what really makes him a good real man is the way he protects people he cares about ( like akane, his mom ect..) and people that are being abused physically ( the girl that kodachi is beating up etc) . That is why it makes perfect sense for trans people to look at this manga as a symbol, NOT BECAUSE RANMA IS A GUY TRAPPED IN GIRL’S BODY OR VICEVERSA but it can be considered a symbol simply because he is a person Who understands in his journey that your biological sex shouldn’t determine what you like , what you do or what you wear .

I do see some cues like Ranma brushing off hard words Akane says unlike the original 80s anime but I think some of Shads worry comes from the original dub and sub from VIZ the original localizer. It was by no means bad or inaccurate but when translation occurs some nuance is changed unintentionally in even the best intentions. The original Japanese audio version has Akane say she hates "men" (otkoko daily kirai) which in that scene is toward boys or in other words, Ranma aged immature males. The word otoko was specifically used in both versions but isn't necessarily meaning all males regardless of maturity level in Akane's perspective.Akane definitely is still into Dr Tofu and mature males just the scene before clearly shows so I think for now we're good but I am concerned about how they might have Ranma cope with his life with his curse. Time will tell but so far I think we're getting a good remake like Urusei Yatsura. Time will tell though. I think Shad's concerns are well founded and Netflix isn't a saint when it comes to stuff like this so I'm not sticking up for the new version or anything. I'm just giving my impression. Takahashi used that casual nudity for decades across her works until InuYasha got its anime, and the international market was impressed upon her by the studio.
