Car designer here. You are evaluating a video game model that looks similar but actually isn't the real thing. Those models aren't exactly a copy of the real car, they don't have exactly the same surfaces. And any minor change in shape curvature influences aerodynamics. Most important, we spend more time on how the air flows to cool the engine and reduce wind noise. It's important to know that this isn't a race car. The customer expects comfort and reliability, not expensive race performance

@@gaara4667 the Audi R8 was always considered a budget supercar, or a high-end sports car, and not something on the same level of the Carrera GT or the Enzo Ferrrari, because of this, folks who bought this car were expecting performance...Just not enough performance where the aerodynamics of the car would matter that much so it would reach higher speeds than what it did reached(which was already pretty high for what it was back then). If you wanted more performance, you would have just bought a Huracan(which is essentially the same car, but under a much more expensive make up and with better aerodynamics).

Correct me if I'm wrong: This judgement is extremely flawed because it's using a rather low poly version of the real deal and it doesn't take into consideration vents and openings. I mean, it makes it seem almost like the car is blocking all air that hits the front grill when the front grill in fact doesn't do that.
@PremierAerodynamics2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the input!
@FRITZI999Ай бұрын
technically the Front grill DOES block the Input, cause the Air runs trough Radiators and other coolant related Devices. THIS slows the Air down and creates a High Pressure Zone in front of the Car. Also Air Intakes ALL slow a car down... exeption the NACA DUCT (Google it). Any large "Shovel Size" Intakes like on the Side of the R8 slow the car down and create drag. It's literally a fine Balance of everything and not be spoken in general. Plenty of modern cars now even have flaps behind the Grille to block it off completely when going fast for Aerodynamic efficiency. Driving fast not much Airflow is needed for cooling... only when you slow down more Air is needed again. Sound funny, but take a look at some modern cars. Ever seen a BUGATTI ? This car eben closes most of the Air intakes when going fast...

someone tell me im dumb, i allways think of puting a chanel behind the wheels to suck the tyres wake, with 2 fans on the back of the car that suck this tyres wake through this chanel, would this mitigate the drag of the wheels? also the same fans can be used in many ways, to invert the blades creating drag when braking, could create a flap that with a press on the stearing wheel can direct the flow or in horizontal position, to create thrust, or im almost vertical position to create downforce. can also be used to mitigate the drag created by the cooling, and much more, its is really not that difficult, the car already have many fans, just need to remove than all and stick just just powerfull in the back, noise is not a problem because it would just work in track mode, when you need confort you can just turn it off.
@PremierAerodynamics2 ай бұрын
Fans can definitely work, however, the main consideration is how much energy they are using compared to how much you will save. With the wheel wakes, they are naturally low energy, so you need to supply energy to accelerate it. If you want to pump it out into the car's wake to make the wake faster and hence less draggy, then you need to route it through the car, which is usually impractical because of other components in it. In terms of that idea, we went through it in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXu0hX1_bMx7qpY
@poly_g60683 күн бұрын
Even just eyeballing the car, you can see the large air dams in the front bumper don't exit anywhere once they enter the wheel housing. On supercars and especially hypercars, there's a reason they started putting these huge vents on the doors, just behind the wheels; it's also on the Mustang GTD, it allows restricted air to exit the front wheels to improve handling. This improves airflow significantly and it's funny how... obvious it is that it would, lol. Still, props to the engineers anyway.

Thanks. From a DIY point of view, much of it is fixed. But, lowering the car and putting on rims with much less opening would be the easiest, and you might get a 3 or 4% drag reduction quite easily from that. What your model doesn't consider is the flow through the cooling package at the front. You NEED the high pressure area to get sufficient flow to actually go through the radiator and not around it. A customer expects, especially with such a car but actually with any car, to floor it not having to think about the engine temperature. Depending on the engine you have over 2MW(!) of heat that needs to be shed through a fairly small radiator on an R8. Design restrictions are also another topic. Mr. Rüdiger Faul could design a W124 with cw value of 0.22 in 1981(!) but the design department butchered that idea. Still 0.29 in the early 80s was unheard off. Mercedes simply didn't brag about that like Audi did with worse values. Can you imagine that a boxy car like the W210 could achieve a value of 0.26 in the early 90s . It's not the boxiness per se. It is the idea what to so with air flow and where you need what.
