Hi Richelle, very well done! It was definitely one of your best I have seen. I used to keep them several years ago before switching to all haps, except I did keep one Peacock, a Lawanda, that won best in show through a local fish club. He’s a solid 6 1/2” and hangs well with my big haps. Anyways thanks for taking the time to explain this as it is quite evident that you have a broad base of knowledge.

Very nice presentation of information. The Aulonocara represents for me the model of a perfect fish: body shape, finnage, disposition, and of course color. I must have been lucky with my peacocks. In a 75 gallon tank I twice maintained breeding PAIRS of the classic Red Shoulder without aggression or hassle. The male would regally cruise the mid-water center of the tank while the female kept company with some mbuna (Rusty Cichlids) in the rock work, left, right, and center. Dominance in the kingdom without strife. Peacocks are large enough to eat diced up seafood whole, so one can avoid foods that shred or melt into tiny particles and pollute the water. At the same time they are not so large that they dirty up tanks and confine movement and natural behavior like Oscars and other South American pasture cows. The aquarist can therefore observe behaviors and community resembling nature. I again heap praise on you for the emphasis on keeping the species "pure" and avoid genetic crosses. It's only in this way that we can maintain the most colorful lines. There is one clown on KZbin who gives fishroom tours bragging about his Aulnocara (and other) crosses. There is nothing to brag about. They're a bunch of nondescript blue/gray also-rans. With your resources I'd implore you to search out some primo examples of the classic Red Shoulder and start a breeding colony. I no longer have the resources or space. Something with a distinct red shoulder, bright blue body, and white trim on the fins. They are getting harder to find, as Lake Malawi is getting over-fished and self-serving basement breeders are bastardizing the domestic stock.
@QuebecCichlides7 жыл бұрын
Hi Joey, Thanks for sharing your experience. Even with my ressources I have found it hard to find a good hansbaenshi colony. I don't know this "clown" you are refering to but he is really putting a dent in our hobby if he's got a good following. Here in Montreal, there has been an influx of low quality unidentified (or badly id'd) cichlids. I'm working hard to educate my clientèle of the troubles of encouraging this practice. Have a nice day. :-)

But because I ordered through online with no chance to request all males, I took 5 each. Here is my question, with size of 5-6cm if the color is showing up does it mean male? or do female color up also?

@QuebecCichlides2 жыл бұрын
Yes. We just call them Aulonocara OB (orange blotch) or Aulonocara 5 color. I breed some too :)
@kristopherblyth22007 жыл бұрын
I’d definitely keep these. A Cichlids shop in a state next to me has a good selection. One question though, I don’t wish to breed them so can you keep males only like 1 or 2 depending on the type? Up to about 25 as I’m planning a 75 gallon when I start.
@QuebecCichlides7 жыл бұрын
25 seems like a lot. I'd add between 15 and 20 peacocks for a 75 gallon tank, max. If you over populate, you have to be regular with your water changes and make bigger ones (30%-35% instead of 25%) You can keep many males of the same species in a tank if you want.
@kristopherblyth22007 жыл бұрын
Ok cool, that's good to know about the extra water changes, I guess where I move to in a couple years will determine how much I can keep. Peacocks seem to be the way to go in terms of variety. Between a few different vids and yours have got my mind made, lol!

Hi Richelle Love your videos. What do you think about peacocks, haps,and frontosa all together in the same tank?
@QuebecCichlides7 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, I do it often and have clients who do it as well. The only limitation is tank size. Frontosas need at least 125 gallons to swim in when they grow up. Also, make sure that they have a cave to hide in if ever the Peacocks and Haps get on their nerves (they're soo zen).

Merci d'avance.
@QuebecCichlides7 жыл бұрын
+Etienne Denis Merci pour ton commentaire Étienne. Comme je l'ai dit dans le vidéo, 75 gallons est le minimum confortable. On peut y mettre environ une quinzaine de poissons, mais ce n'est pas une science exacte.

Dear Richelle: I’ve kept several species of cichlids including: yellow labs (Labidochromis caeruleus); convict cichlids (Amatitlania nigrofasciata); shell-dwellers (Neolamprologus multifasciatus); and, brichardi cichlids (Neolamprologus brichardi). I didn’t care to keep the yellow labs once I found that they ate their young. Since I had six of them in a 75-gallon tank, I decided that was undesirable as I couldn’t get fry from them or keep any other fish with them. I decided to trade them for credit to a pet store and moved on to Columbian tetra (Hyphessobrycon columbianus). I’ve been breeding them for about five years. I occationally purchase some female, fancy guppies and segregate the fry by gender as soon as I can do so, to avoid inbreeding. Thank you for a very informative and entertaining video on Aulonocara. Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar
@QuebecCichlides7 жыл бұрын
Hi E.J., I'm glad you liked my video. You certainly seem to be having a blast at breeding fish. Aulonocara might also eat their young, especially in the aquarium, which is a lot smaller than the wild. Regardless, some of fry usually survive. If you catch them early enough, you might even be able to save them all. During my christmas break (the 25th), my A. sp. "stuartgranti maleri" spit her fry in the aquarium before I could get to her. Upon my return, the 75-ish fry were all still in the aquarium. It took me a while but I was able to fish them all out. Phew! Talk to you soon! Richelle
@ejbrinegar7 жыл бұрын
Dear Richelle: Thank you for the information. Yes, if I can get my fish to breed it is very rewarding to me. Some fish, like guppies, breed if at all possible. Others will only breed if conditions are ideal. It makes me feel that I've given my pets the best of care if I can induce breeding and save as many fry as possible. The main joy of the hobby is providing the happiest conditions for my pets and plants. Thank you for your help and encouragement. Sincerely, Brinegar
