The camera work when Zuko was talking to Iroh is amazing. Iroh sat in the bright room and was shown without bars in front of him, while Zuko was shot dark and through the bars. Symbolizing his mental imprisonment, which he has to break out of.

Remember back in Book 1 The Winter Solstice, Part 1: he got kidnapped by Heir Bai and brought to the spirit world for 24 hours. The first thing he had to do when he got out was go to the bathroom.

Roku and Sozin had very similar backgrounds. The highest nobility in a peaceful and prosperous nation. The biggest difference was that whilst Sozin read about other nations and made assumptions about them by comparing them unfavourably with his own, Roku went out and actually experienced those other nations. he met the people, and learned from them. He saw firsthand that no one type of people was superior to any other The exact same lesson Iroh made sure to teach Zuko, back when he taught him about redirecting lightning

The idea with the firebender assassin sent by Zuko is that he channels chi energy from his stomach and focuses it into the tattoo on his forehead to fire beams that explode on contact. According to the showrunners, his metal prosthetics are a result of him experimenting with his powers through trial and error and he got his reputation through a winning streak of firebending duels that did not last long

As the azula defender that I am 😭, I truly think people fail to realize how much the beach episode humanizes her it’s the first time we see her actually be vulnerable it’s easy for people to forget that these are children no matter how mature they are they’re children, and we see how azula fails to fit into the normal teenage life because all she’s ever known is power and being a weapon, she was never taught anything else because of her gift at being a fire bending prodigy.

Most people don't think too deeply about the tragedy of Azula's character on their first watch, it's completely normal. The show until this point paints her as a cunning villain who actively antagonize her brother and our heroes, so of course most people just takes her actions this episode as the crazy and cold-hearted portrait she's always putting on. She was bullying people, destroying things, she was mean to her friends and she didn't know how to be a person. "That's just how Azula is." The way she was manipulated and abused isn't as obvious as Zuko's giant scar and can be easily overlooked. Most people just are looking for a good time watching this show and that's great! The beauty of Avatar is that you can re-watch it and always find new things and get more depth into the characters and world.

In the beginning of the show the transitions between Aang and Zuko were often done as like opposites. When Aang was on the left side of the screen, Zuko was on the right side etc. Now that he learns about his past the transitions are more 1:1. Aangs hand becomes Zukos hand and Avatar Rokus face becomes Zukos face in the transition. THIS is incredible visual storytelling - what most shows nowadays completely miss, despite much more time, money and better technology.

I always love the cinematography during Zuko's talk with Iroh. Between the camera placement of Zuko behind bars and Iroh being free, then the moment at 24:53 where the bar is placed over his face. It shows his scarred side when Iroh mentions his father's grandfather, then the other clear side for his mother's grandfather. Perfect symbolism of the two halves of his family.

Finding out about who Zuko's family really is... is pretty groundbreaking.. he's more related to the Avatar than he could have known.. their destines tied to each other. There's a reason that they've been hinting at this for like all three seasons now. There's tons of episodes where it will show Aang struggling or going through something, then flash right to Zuko going through a lot of the same things. That they are brothers basically in a lot of ways (not biologically but spiritually).

I absolutely love the twist of having Avatar Roku be Zuko’s (and Azula’s) other great-grandfather. That being said, they didn’t decide on that until at least after 2x07, Zuko Alone, because this episode really fucked with the timeline of the firelords, and created an inconsistency. In Zuko Alone, Firelord Azulon (Sozin’s son) was said to have reigned for 23 years. He died 5 years before the start of the show. That would mean Sozin, already an old man 12 years before the war, would have had to have reigned for another 84 years AFTER Roku died. It also means that both Roku’s wife and his daughter had to have given birth in their 60s, because Zuko’s mother was in her early 20s when she had him. It’s kind of like how they fucked up Kyoshi’s timeline-in 1x04 it’s said she was born over 400 years ago, but then they made her the avatar right before Roku, who was born 182 years ago, so in her novels they had to invent a technique that allowed her to extend her lifespan.

Not all airbenders have the arrow tattoos. An airbender receives the tattoos when they reach the level of master and complete the 36 tiers of airbending. Most airbenders get their tattoos later in life because true mastery over airbending is difficult to learn. An exception to obtaining them is if the airbender creates a completely new technique then they’re automatically entitled to the tattoos. Aang was an extremely skilled airbender, despite only completing 35 tiers, he obtained his tattoos and master status at age twelve for his creation of the air scooter. He was the youngest airbender to obtain master status.

25:33 remember when I said there's a reason Zuko had that dream where he saw aangs face on himself in the mirror? This is why. Zuko is related to the avatar, he has avatar blood flowing through him. This is why you seen Zuko show kindness at small points in the show(rescuing the helmsman in the Storm, kissing that girl in ba sing se, trying to save Zhao in the North Pole, etc). What he's been taught vs what's in his spirit is exactly why even Zuko knows something is off. He doesn't know right and wrong anymore because they are fighting within his spirit. Zuko is the avatar, and aang is Zuko. Now you see why all the episodes showing aang and zukos story side by side are done the way they were.

Azula is a physcologically abused teenager who had the same upbringing as Zuko. Yes she's a psychopath, but its a product of her environment. People need to show more compassion for her like they do with Zuko. I always hated how Iroh seemed to think she was ireedemable even though she was also the descendant of Roku and seemingly had the same conflict inside of her.

She didn't have enough time with her mother or somebody like Iroh to help her good side win the internal conflict. The evil side took over early and stayed in charge. Worth noting that because ATLA is based on Eastern cultures and philosophies, it doesn't ever really embrace the idea of forgiveness and redemption that you find a lot in Western stories with their strong influence from Christianity. Everyone in ATLA that switches sides was actually good all along, and we see that struggle from the beginning as they feel reluctantly forced to oppose other good guys out of loyalty to their nation or whatever. Actual bad people stay bad and simply get punished. This plays out a lot in the third season, but even in the first season we had story moments like Admiral Zhao refusing Zuko's help at the north pole, he went to his doom stubbornly unwilling to take even the slightest step towards redemption.

3:43: it’s supposed to be a fictional game called Kuai Ball, but realistically it’s actually similar to Sepak Takraw, a “foot volleyball” that is created in Malaysia when the Chinese introduced “Cuju” to them, which is a similar kicking ball game. Sepak Takraw is insanely intense and physically demanding, and also a popular sport in South East Asia. You should seethe insane kicks they do 😂

I don't think Sozin originally wanted to wipe out the Air Nomads but he had to because knew the next avatar is going to be from the Air Nomads. Preemptively, to prevent the Avatar from stopping him, he had to. It's similar to what happened between him and Roku - he didn't want his friend dead but knew his friend had to die if his dream is to become a reality. And honestly, Sozin seemed genuine in his belief of sharing the Fire Nation prosperity with the other nations (even though his methods were.... not good to put it lightly). If I would compare him to a comic character, I'd say Sozin is a lot like Dr. Doom. However, subsequent Firelords (especially Ozai) hijacked the war for domination and power.
