Hey! I'll read Murakami; been postponing it for far too long. The "going through life by passion" sounds like a great motif. I'll also try to read Dune this month, another one I've been postponing (I think I'll dislike it because I tried it in the past). Many people make the connection between Kafka and The Vegetarian. I haven't read any of Kang's books and didn't finish The Metamorphosis, but a trusted friend who read it (The Vegetarian) told me some passages were very exaggerated for the sake of driving some feminist point. The "trying to become a tree" can be hauntingly beautiful or poignantly dull. Anyway, Happy 2025, Avid! Many great reads for us. 🎉

@luizdelsoto Great that you will read Murakami! His writing style is strange at times but of his sentences are really profound. Franz Kafka seems like an interesting author I should read sometime (although it might be a while before I do since I am currently in a reading slump for the genre of Western classics). I do intend to read Kang's historical fiction novel "Human Acts" sometime this year, which deals with the repression of the democracy movement in 1980s South Korea. Btw, I gave the Makioka Sisters a try and read Part 1 (a little less than one third of the novel) but for now I have DNfd it. Just reading hundreds of pages on someone's plans to get married gets a little tedious. Furthermore, unfortunately the copy of the book I have has grammatical errors every second page (I am assuming it is a misprint). I do have several Korean authors that I look forward to reading in the coming months. Happy 2025!

I think I understand the situation. The Makioka Sisters requires a certain sensitivity and patience, which aren’t always easy to evoke at a whim-much like many other books that demand the right state of mind to tackle. I’ve been meaning to read Ulysses (Joyce) and Proust for some time now (idk something like six years), but I can’t resonate with the text at all. And, well, there are always other books and projects in life. I agree that the rhythm of The Makioka Sisters can be challenging-a slow, long, and serene burn with a touch of historical background.

Ps.: Appreciate you giving it a try, especially with this reading schedule of yours.
