WOW, absolutely beautiful restoration by you and your crew. of craftsman. Your knowledge and expertise is second to none. Year's ago we knew a gentleman who built custom spiral staircases for new homes as well as restoration projects. He was a true craftsman that created masterpiece staircases. Very classy house, and a fun finish video to watch as well. Something much more hygge about this more modest take on Victorian than something like an over the top Queen Anne. That’s an amazing house and restoration. Consider recommending ventless clothes dryers if they have no intention of line drying outside again. With ventless there’s no need for a hole in the outside wall, and one less thing pulling air out of the house. Ventless models have other things to take care of: Drainage and occasional lint clean out of the exchanger. Can be normal electric or heat pump.

Our family is from Rhinelander Wisconsin. We went back recently and I went on a walking tour. We have photos of my great grandfathers home. It was a huge three story Victorian with garages below. It was on a hill. I remember it. Gramps GAVE it to the church next door when he moved to Florida and it was immediately demolished and replaced with today’s parking lot. But there are quite a few of these monsters in town. They are almost all in good shape. There are no derelict homes there. A quiet walk by the Courthouse neighborhood is a step back in time to the turn of the century; the 20th century. Ps: under ALL the asphalt streets are cobblestones!

@@BrentHull tourism is the main business in town. But it is the county seat so that employs a lot of people. There is a two year Junior College/Vocational Technical Institute here also. It was home to a large papermill and the mandatory brewery. Those were major employers but after WW2 they closed. Still the town is charming. Nearby is Minoqua. Another Idyllic town it is built on a series of small islands in the middle of a lake. Lots of tourist shops and art galleries there.

It really looks wonderful! We have an original 1930s kitchen, laundry, and half bath area that work for us, but if people want a more open floor plan for a kitchen/informal dining/family room, I like to see that limited to an add-on at the back. Yes, my cabinets go all the way to the top, lol. I like how the homeowner can have her more modern decor, but the lines, features, and details keep the history intact. Worth sacrificing the 'servant's stairs' in favor of that awesome upstairs balcony. I always get a kick out of Texas style; it really is fun. Cheers from CA.

Hey Brent, I’ve just found your channel and it’s really helped give me the actual terms for thoughts I’ve had for a while about houses. Unfortunately, though, I’m about to move to an area where I won’t be able to afford an old house. I’ll be stuck with a new build open concept home. Can you give any tips on making a one story contemporary home more homely? Is there anything different I can do to the trim/cabinets/etc that would add a little detail to make it more special and being beauty into an otherwise cold canvas? I’ve looked through your backlog but I missed it if you’ve covered it before. Thank you!

When adding new elements, you try to add something similar but not exact so that later generations don't think the new element was always part of the original house.

@ interesting. I would want my restoration to look like it was original if possible. Was it uncommon for lavish old houses to be on acreage? It feels like I’m looking for a unicorn. Most are on small city lots 😞 should I focus on a certain area of the country where it was more common? Or is it just hard a find a pre 1930 house on acreage? I love both Craftsman and Victorian eras but to find a Victorian era home that needs restoration on 5+ acres has been hard. 🤷‍♀️

Someone needs to come up with insulation solutions that don’t require removing all the siding. I can’t afford anything like this on my 1923 bungalow but I know enough to not add insulation at all, or to use wool when I really need it. But adding a dimple layer as you did here is not possible for me. Can I add it between and alongside the studs, wrapping it around 3 sides of the rockwool? Help a girl without an unlimited budget out.

My house was built in 1890 outside of massillon Ohio as a farm house. Much damage has been done over time and random various "fixes". Basement steps are not original to the design. Whoever put them in cut the floor joists and didn't support them at all. Major beams cut. The people who installed the furnace knocked out three blocks of the only main support wall in the basement to put duct work through! At this point most of the house will be gutted and trashed. I would like to keep it original as possible but it will be updated as needed.

Well, I applaud you for rescuing the house, but the decor is simply atrocious - Modern Farmhouse gone Haywire, if you know what I mean. Even though the railings above the bays and porch are an original feature, I really don't like them. I think their proportions are poor - the balusters are too far apart, and the height of the thing is, well... too high. I don't care for the accent walls or gray colors. It's possible to blend modern and historic influences, but this decor just looks cheap. Thanks, though, for preserving it.
