Welcome everyone!
In todays video I'm using my new portable makita thicknesser, the 2012NB.
I personally think its a truly amazing piece of kit, which I couldn't do without now!
Today I'm planning up some oak boards on face and edge, which is being re-purposed / up cycled to make a Bathroom vanity unit. The Oak is American Oak and was originally a solid Oak coffee table.
I also show planning up an old scaffold board to bring it back to life!
Lots more than just showing the thicknesser in action in this video.
Extras include, onfo about the differences in oiling Oak Veneered mdf and Solid oak, as believe it or not one goes darker than the other.
Also showing how I'm building this vanity unit.
Also a quick peep in the spray room showing my new collection of Graco Airless Sprayers (7 in total!)
I hope you enjoy, if you do please Like, Share and SUBSCRIBE 👍👍👍
Cheers peeps!

We recently lumbered a 36" maple, a 36" white ash, and a 32" pecan. After drying, we tried planing with a Rigid (Home Depot) 13" planer with 2 HSS knives kzbin.infoUgkxIzvvTi3_Qc8JnVdYYRJCvuoDC4QjTzeL . This job was clearly too much for that machine. The pecan was particularly difficult, due to heavy mineral deposits, and a sharp pair of HSS knives would be consumed by a mere 3 boards. We were also having lots of problems from chip bruising, due to poor dust collection. The shavings came off like straw and jammed in the 4" hose.We bought the DW735 simply to be able to run carbide blades, which worked brilliantly for the pecan. However, we found it to be a much, MUCH nicer machine. It was far more rigid than the "Rigid" planer, and far more accurate as well. But what I liked most about it was the dust feed. This machine has its own blower, which shreds the "straw" like shavings as they come off the cutting head and helps boost the shavings into the dust collection system. No more clogs! It's also nicely sealed so that the internals stay quite clean. This is just a well tempered machine that's a delight to use. It literally cut the labor in half. Just another example of getting what you pay for.

Nice one mate! I’ve got the same thicknesser and I love it, it’s a beast of a machine especially for a “bench top” thicknesser 🤙🏻

Lathams in hemel, or arnold laver in Borehamwood stock rough sawn oak mate, its a lot cheaper than you'd think for America white oak like your veneer. European oak like the old furniture you broke down to use is a bit more pricey 👍👍

I’m setting up a workshop for small wood projects. Thinking about getting this but wondering what’s the shortest length of wood you can send through that? Would it suddenly shoot out a small slab of wood say 1’ to 6” long? Thanks!

Very enjoyable. It’s a shame they don’t do a planer/ thicknesser, maybe they do. Triton make a thicknesser that get good reviews. Most of my power tools are Makita with the odd bit of Festool. I don’t get what the fuss is about with that brand but will invest in a Domino when the next job turns up that I can use it on.

I tried with a triton.. 399 euros vs 650 for the Makita.. One of the sprockets broke on the feed spindles. I think I'm going to have to spend the extra cash and get a Makita. All my cordless are Makita, table saw is DeWalt. All the contractors from the UK in Portugal seem to use Makita. In the US the popular brand is Milwaukee. I have Makita from the US and Europe and it appears the build quality on the Makita in Europe is a bit better.

@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop i see. I just had my Jet JWP12 motor and gearbox housing broken into pieces and it may already damage the amarture too because of the lousy plastic it was made from. Fyi, i casually used it within my 6-7 yrs of owning it with mostly pine wood as the load. Very dissappointing. Hopefully the makita is more robust.

735 is nearly twice as heavy and you can retrofit with helix cutters (about 400 euros). So in a different league. And difficult to get to Europe.

I wanted a Makita thicknesser, I actually paid for one. I wasn't told I would have to wait almost 3 months to take delivery. Late June was the estimated delivery time. After waiting 3 weeks and not receiving it, Makita informed me of the delay. Needless to say I asked for a refund, I received it today. They blame Covid for the delay.
